clarity.

At 8:03 a.m., the scheduled transfer went through.

Two thousand dollars.

I watched the confirmation appear on my screen.

Then I opened the recurring-payment settings and removed it.

The confirmation took less than thirty seconds.

That was all.

Three years of financial support ended with a button and a password.

At 8:17, Mariela called.

I let it ring.

At 8:19, she called again.

Then again.

On the fourth attempt, I answered.

“What happened?”

Her voice was sharp.

“The bank rejected my card.”

I said nothing.

“Gabriela, did you do something?”

“What do you know exactly what I'm talking about.”

“I canceled the monthly transfer.”

Silence.

Then a breath.

“You what?”

“I stopped paying your mortgage.”

“You can't just do that.”

“Actually, I can.”

“But that's my mortgage.”

“I know.”

“You agreed to help.”

“I agreed to help for three years.”

“That doesn't mean you can suddenly leave me stranded.”

I almost laughed.

“You told me to stay in a hotel because I might bring bacteria into your apartment.”

“That is completely different.”

“How?”

“Because you're twisting what I said.”

“I don't think I am.”

Her voice rose.

“You know how unstable my finances are.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The old explanation.

The one that had always worked.

Until now.

“I have surgery tomorrow,” I said.

“I know.”

“You haven't asked once how I'm doing.”

“That isn't fair.”

“You've missed the money.

Because I was beginning to understand that the relationship I had defended for years had depended on my willingness to keep paying.

That afternoon, I received an email from Mariela.

She attached a mortgage statement.

At first I assumed it was meant to frighten me.

Then I saw my name.

I read it once.

Then again.

My name appeared under the section for co-borrower.

I had never signed that mortgage.

I had never agreed to be responsible for it.

I called Mariela immediately.

She didn't answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Valeria saw my face.

“What?”

I handed her the phone.

She read the examples of my actual signature.

The difference was subtle.

But once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.

The final curve was wrong.

The pressure was wrong.

The initials were slightly too large.

Someone had copied my name.

I called the mortgage company.

After several transfers and a long wait, a representative told me they could not discuss the account until they verified my identity.

When they finally did, the representative's tone changed.

“You're listed as a co-borrower.”

“I know.”

“Did you authorize this loan?”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“Ma'am, if you believe your enough.

I ended the call.

Valeria was already reaching for her phone.

“I know an attorney.”

“I don't want to start a
