The movement explained the cane. His left leg remained stiff, and when he sat, pain crossed his face before he could hide it.

I hated myself for noticing.

I hated him a little for making me care.

Samuel switched the lamp back on.

The cabin filled with weak yellow light.

Daniel looked at the metal box on the desk.

"How much have you read?"

"Enough to know Richard found you here in 2018."

Daniel nodded.

"What happened?"

"He came alone."

"How did he find you?"

"I still don't know."

"Eleanor said he disappeared for two days and came home with blood on his coat."

Daniel stared at me.

"Eleanor told you that?"

"Today."

He looked away.

"Then she finally stopped protecting him."

"She says she was afraid."

"She was."

"You sound like you're defending her."

"I'm explaining her."

"Everybody has explanations."

Daniel met my eyes.

"Yes."

I sat across from him.

"Tell me about Lake Briar."

Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the floor.

He removed it slowly.

"I'd been here for about six months. Richard arrived shortly after midnight."

"Did he threaten you?"

"He offered me money first."

"For what?"

"Permanent silence."

"About the company?"

"About everything."

"How much?"

"Five million."

Carter gave a disbelieving laugh.

Daniel looked at him.

"Your father was already having liquidity problems. Five million was probably painful."

"Why offer it?"

"Because I'd discovered he was using the same subcontractor scheme again."

Carter's expression hardened.

"The companies in Elias's binder."

"Some of them."

"You knew Elias had the binder?"

"I gave it to him."

"Then why disappear from him?"

Daniel hesitated.

I noticed.

"Answer."

"I learned someone had been leaking information."

"Who?"

"I didn't know."

"Elias?"

"I suspected everyone."

Samuel folded his arms.

"Including me?"

"Yes."

Samuel's face tightened.

Daniel continued before he could respond.

"Richard knew things only four people knew. Me. Elias. Samuel. And one other person."

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the rain-darkened window.

"Eleanor."

My breath caught.

"Your sister."

"Yes."

"Did you suspect her?"

"I didn't want to."

"But?"

"I had to."

Samuel shook his head.

"Eleanor was terrified of Richard."

"Fear makes people reveal things they don't intend to reveal."

I thought of her washing blood from his coat.

"What happened when Richard came here?"

Daniel rubbed his left hand over his knee.

"He demanded the records. I refused. He told me Audrey was an adult now and he could reach her whenever he wanted."

I felt Carter stiffen beside me.

"What did you do?"

"I told him if he went near you, everything would be released."

"To whom?"

"Federal investigators. Investors. Banks. Reporters."

"And?"

"He laughed."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"He said nobody would believe a disgraced thief who had spent twenty years hiding."

"Then what?"

"We fought."

"Again."

"Yes."

"Who started it?"

"I did."

That surprised me.

Daniel didn't soften it.

"He showed me a photograph of you. I hit him."

I looked down at my hands.

"What photograph?"

"You leaving a restaurant in Manhattan."

"When?"

"October 2018."

I remembered living there then.

I had been twenty-three.

"Did I know Carter?"

"No."

"Then Richard was watching me before I met his son."

"Yes."

That changed something important.

Richard could not claim I had entered his family as part of a scheme.

He had known who I was first.

"Why didn't he approach me?"

"Because I told him what would happen."

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Blackwell Capital would begin acquiring every Sterling obligation it could."

Carter sat forward.

"So the debt strategy started as protection."

"Partly."

"Not revenge?"

Daniel gave him a tired look.

"Anyone who tells you revenge had nothing to do with it is lying."

At least he admitted it.

"What happened after you hit Richard?"

"He came at me. We went through the desk."

Daniel pointed toward the dark stain on the wall.

"I struck my head there."

I looked at the stain.

"Your blood."

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

"I broke Richard's nose."

Despite everything, Samuel smiled.

"Good."

Daniel gave him a look.

Samuel shrugged.

"I've waited twenty-two years."

I almost laughed.

It felt wrong.

It also felt human.

"So Richard left?"

"Eventually."

"Why didn't he kill you?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"He could have."

"But?"

"I had arranged a dead-man release. If I failed to make contact within seventy-two hours, records would go out."

"The letter says you didn't contact Elias."

"I didn't."

"Then why weren't the records released?"

"Because Elias wasn't controlling the mechanism."

Samuel frowned.

"Who was?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your aunt."

I stared at him.

"Marjorie?"

"Yes."

The room seemed to shift again.

"My aunt knew you were alive?"

"Not everything."

"Did she know in 2018?"

"Yes."

I stood.

The chair scraped backward.

"You have got to be kidding me."

"Audrey—"

"She raised me."

"I know."

"She watched me mourn you."

"I know."

"Stop saying that!"

Daniel flinched.

I walked toward the window because I needed distance from every person in the room.

Aunt Marjorie had sat beside me at school concerts.

She had taught me to drive.

She had held me when I cried on my eighteenth birthday because I could no longer remember my father's voice.

And she had known.

"Why?"

Daniel's answer came quietly.

"Because I begged her."

I turned.

"Why would she agree?"

"Because Richard had threatened you."

"Again."

"Yes."

"That's everyone's answer."

"Because it was the reason."

"No."

I shook my head.

"It was your reason. It wasn't my choice."

Daniel looked down.

"You're right."

This time I didn't tell him to stop agreeing.

I wanted him to feel it.

Carter approached slowly.

"Audrey."

I lifted a hand.

"Please."

He stopped.

I asked Daniel, "Did you ever see me?"

"From a distance."

My throat closed.

"When?"

"Several times."

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"You know."

He looked ashamed.

"Maybe twelve."

I stared at him.

"Twelve times."

"Over twenty years."

"You watched me?"

"Yes."

"Did you come to my college graduation?"

His silence answered.

I remembered that day.

Aunt Marjorie crying.

An empty chair I had imagined my father sitting in.

"You were there."

"Across the courtyard."

My eyes burned.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"I saw two men I recognized from Richard's security contractor."

"Maybe they weren't there for you."

"Maybe."

"You chose maybe over me."

His face crumpled.

"Yes."

That answer finally contained no defense.

I wiped my eyes angrily.

"Good. At least we understand each other."

Daniel looked older suddenly.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

"I hoped for the chance to explain."

"You're getting it."

"More than I deserve."

Samuel turned away, giving us privacy without leaving.

Carter stared at the floor.

I returned to the table.

"Why are you here tonight?"

Daniel looked at the metal box.

"Because someone entered this cabin yesterday."

We all went still.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"How did you know?"

"A motion sensor sent an alert."

"You still monitor the cabin?"

"Yes."

"So you came back."

"I wanted to see what they'd taken."

Samuel frowned.

"You walked into a potentially compromised location alone?"

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I've made worse decisions."

"I can name several."

Daniel almost laughed.

Then his expression changed.

He reached for the notebooks in the box.

"Was anything missing?"

"We wouldn't know."

He counted them.

"One."

My pulse quickened.

"What?"

"A red notebook."

"What was in it?"

"Names."

"What names?"

"People connected to Richard's subcontractor network.
