The black binder sat inside a locked case on the floor of Samuel's car. My father's letter remained folded in my pocket. Every few minutes I touched it to reassure myself it was real.

Carter sat beside me in the back this time.

Neither of us had spoken since leaving the building.

Samuel drove north.

I finally looked at Carter.

"You didn't know about the missed covenant."

"No."

"How involved are you in Sterling's finances?"

"Less than I thought."

His voice was bitter.

"Dad gives me project operations. Vendor negotiations. Personnel. He keeps financing close."

"Why?"

"I used to think because he was better at it."

"And now?"

He looked out the window.

"Because secrets are easier when you divide the company into rooms and give everyone only one key."

It was an unexpectedly precise description of Richard.

I leaned back.

"Carter."

He turned.

"You don't have to come to Vermont."

"Yes, I do."

"You may learn something about your father you can't undo."

"I already have."

"More."

He looked at my cheek.

"I'm done pretending not knowing is safer."

I believed him.

Not completely.

But more than I had that morning.

Samuel stopped for fuel north of the city.

While he was inside the station, my phone rang.

Richard.

Carter saw the name.

"Don't answer."

I considered that.

Then I answered.

"What?"

Richard's breathing came through the speaker.

"Where are you?"

"Why?"

"Come home."

"No."

"Audrey."

"You've used my name enough today."

His voice lowered.

"You went to Elias."

I looked at Carter.

"How do you know?"

"Because I know Elias."

"That isn't an answer."

"Did he show you the trust?"

My pulse changed.

Carter heard the silence.

Richard continued.

"So he did."

"You knew."

"Of course I knew."

"That Blackwell Capital belongs to me?"

"I knew Daniel created something."

"Something worth forty-seven million dollars."

Carter stared at me.

Richard was silent.

I smiled without humor.

"You didn't know the amount."

"Money won't help you."

"Interesting thing for a man who owes me thirty million to say."

His breath changed.

There it was.

The reversal.

This morning, I had entered his kitchen as the daughter-in-law he thought he could discipline.

By afternoon, I controlled the debt threatening his company.

"Audrey, listen carefully."

"No."

"This isn't a game."

"I agree."

"Daniel built that trust because he hated me."

"My father built it because you stole his company."

"That's what Elias told you."

"The documents told me."

"You don't understand those documents."

"Then explain the forged signature."

Silence.

"Explain Samuel being in London on the day he supposedly witnessed it."

Nothing.

"Explain why you erased my father's name."

Richard finally spoke.

"Daniel was going to destroy everything."

"Everything meaning you."

"He was reckless."

"Did you hit him at the Madison House?"

Carter's eyes closed.

Richard said nothing.

"Did you?"

"He attacked me."

"That's not what Elias said."

"Of course not."

"Did you strike him with a lamp?"

"Audrey."

"Yes or no?"

"What difference does it make?"

The answer was yes.

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What happened at Lake Briar?"

Silence.

Not ordinary silence.

Dead silence.

Carter turned fully toward me.

I repeated the question.

"What happened at Lake Briar in October 2018?"

Richard breathed in slowly.

"Who told you that?"

"My father."

That landed.

For several seconds, there was nothing on the line.

Then Richard said, "Daniel is dead."

My heartbeat stumbled.

Carter reached for my hand.

I pulled away without meaning to.

"How do you know?"

Richard's voice hardened.

"Because I know."

"Did you see him die?"

Another silence.

"Richard."

"Come home."

"Did you see my father die?"

"You need to stop."

"Did you kill him?"

Carter flinched.

Richard's voice cracked.

"No."

The answer came with too much force.

"Then what happened?"

"I tried to help him."

I almost laughed.

"Like you helped him at the hotel?"

"He was sick."

"What kind of sick?"

"You don't know anything."

"Then tell me."

"He wasn't the man you remember."

"I barely remember him at all because you spent twenty-two years making sure of that."

Richard exhaled sharply.

"Daniel had become paranoid."

"Samuel says you were having me followed when I was twelve."

"Daniel believed that."

"Elias showed me the photographs."

Silence.

I continued.

"School. Bicycle. My aunt's house."

Richard said nothing.

"You weren't his paranoia."

"Audrey—"

"You were the reason for it."

His voice became quieter.

"You think Elias is innocent?"

"No."

That seemed to surprise him.

"I think everyone who knew the truth and left me ignorant owes me an explanation."

"Then ask Elias why Daniel stopped trusting him."

I looked at Carter.

"What?"

Richard continued.

"Ask your precious lawyer why Daniel disappeared from him in 2018."

"He already told me he doesn't know."

Richard laughed softly.

"And you believed him."

"What do you know?"

"More than Elias wants you to."

"Then tell me."

"Come home."

"No."

"Then we're finished."

"We were finished when you hit me."

"I'm not talking about family."

"What are you talking about?"

"The debt."

I almost smiled.

"You don't get to decide that."

"You think because your name sits on a trust you're suddenly a financier?"

"No."

"You'll accelerate the loan and destroy hundreds of jobs."

There it was.

A new tactic.

Not authority.

Guilt.

"Those workers didn't forge my father's signature."

"They'll still lose their paychecks."

"Then perhaps you should have considered that before hiding thirty million dollars of debt."

Carter looked away.

Richard heard the change in my breathing.

"Ask Carter."

I went still.

"Ask him what happens if Sterling collapses."

I looked at my husband.

Richard continued.

"Ask him how many families depend on that company."

"Don't use your employees as human shields."

"I built their livelihoods."

"With stolen assets."

"That is not proven."

"It will be."

Richard's voice turned cold.

"Not if you keep driving north."

My blood chilled.

Carter saw my face.

"How do you know we're driving north?"

Richard said nothing.

I looked through the rear window.

Cars moved behind us.

None obvious.

"Are you following us?"

"Come home."

I ended the call.

Carter immediately looked behind us.

"Samuel."

He returned from the gas station.

"What?"

"Richard knows we're heading north."

Samuel froze with one hand on the driver's door.

"How?"

"I don't know."

He looked across the parking lot.

Then beneath the car.

"What are you doing?"

"Checking."

"For what?"

"A tracker."

Carter got out.

Samuel crouched near the rear bumper.

Thirty seconds later, he reached beneath the chassis and pulled free a small black device.

Carter stared.

"Jesus."

Samuel held it between two fingers.

"Magnetic GPS."

My stomach turned.

"Richard put that there?"

"Someone did."

"When?"

Samuel thought.

"Could've been at the house."

Carter looked furious.

"Give it to me."

Samuel handed it over.

Carter walked toward a delivery truck parked beside the station.

"What are you doing?"

He crouched and stuck the tracker beneath its rear bumper.

The truck pulled away two minutes later heading east.

Samuel almost smiled.

"Maybe you are your mother's son after all."

Carter returned to the car.

"How far is Lake Briar?"

"Three and a half hours."

"Let's go."

We drove.

The city disappeared.

Traffic thinned.

Forests replaced concrete.

My father's letter sat open on my lap.

If Richard tells you I am dead, ask him what happened at Lake Briar.

Richard had done exactly that.

Daniel is dead.

I tried to help him.

The words circled endlessly.

By late afternoon, clouds had gathered over the hills.

Samuel told us what little he knew.

Daniel had purchased a small cabin near Lake Briar under another name in 2012. Samuel had visited only once. Elias apparently knew of the property but claimed never to have gone there.

"What name did Daniel use?" I asked.

"David Bell."

"Why Bell?"

"Your grandmother's maiden name."

Another detail stolen from me.

Carter rested his arm against the window.

"Did my mother know?"

"I don't know."

"She knew about the hotel."

"That doesn't mean Daniel told her everything."

Carter nodded.

His phone buzzed repeatedly.

Madison.

He answered on speaker.

"Carter?"

"We're okay."

"Dad's losing it."

I sat forward.

"What is he doing?"

"He locked himself in the study."

"Is Mom safe?"

"She's with me."

Eleanor's voice came faintly from the background.

"Audrey?"

"I'm here."

"Where are you?"

I looked at Samuel.

He shook his head.

"Driving."

"To Vermont?"

My chest tightened.

"How do you know?"

Eleanor went silent.

"Mom?" Carter said.

She whispered, "Lake Briar."

Carter looked at me.

"You knew?"

"I knew Daniel had a cabin."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because Richard made me promise."

Carter laughed bitterly.

"Mom, you have to stop saying that."

"I know."

"Did you go there?"

"No."

"Did Dad?"

Silence.

"Eleanor," I said.

"Did Richard go to Lake Briar in 2018?"

"Yes."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"How do you know?"

"He disappeared for two days."

"That's not proof."

"When he came home, there was blood on his coat."

Nobody spoke.

I heard only the tires against pavement.

Carter whispered, "Whose blood?"

"I don't know."

"Did you ask?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"That he'd hit a deer."

Samuel looked at me in the mirror.

I felt sick.

Eleanor continued.

"I washed the coat."

"Mom."

Her voice broke.

"I know."

Carter closed his eyes.

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid."

He said nothing.

Eleanor started crying.

I took the phone.

"What happened after?"

"Richard burned a pair of shoes."

Samuel cursed softly.

"And then?"

"He barely slept for weeks."

"Did he say Daniel's name?"

"Once."

My throat tightened.

"What did he say?"

"He was talking in his sleep."

"What words?"

Eleanor hesitated.

"Daniel, don't make me do this again."

The car filled with silence.

Again.

The hotel.

The cabin.

Two confrontations separated by nineteen years.

"Did you tell Elias?" I asked.

"No."

"Samuel?"

"No."

"Anyone?"

"No."

I looked at the trees rushing past.

"Thank you for telling me now."

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

I ended the call.

We reached Lake Briar shortly before dusk.

The road narrowed to gravel beneath dark pines.

Samuel drove from memory.

"Cabin should be another mile."

Rain started lightly.

Carter leaned forward.

"There."

A small mailbox stood crooked beside the road.

No number.

Only faded letters.

D. Bell.

My breath stopped.

Samuel turned down the lane.

The cabin appeared through the trees.

Single story.

Dark wood.

Green roof.

Lake water visible beyond it.

No lights.

No car.

We parked.

Nobody moved.

Twenty-two years of absence waited behind one ordinary wooden door.

I got out first.

The air smelled of wet earth and pine.

Carter followed.

Samuel carried a flashlight.

The porch boards creaked beneath my shoes.

I reached the door.

Locked.

Samuel searched above the frame.

Nothing.

Then Carter pointed.

"Under the planter."

A small brass key sat beneath a clay pot.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

The lock turned.

The door opened inward.

Dust.

Cold air.

Darkness.

Samuel found a switch.

A lamp came on.

The cabin looked abandoned but not empty.

Books lined one wall.

A jacket hung near the door.

A coffee mug sat upside down beside the sink.

I stepped inside.

On the mantel was a photograph.

Me.

Age twelve.

Purple backpack.

The same day someone working for Richard had photographed me leaving school.

But this photograph was different.

Closer.

Taken from another angle.

On the back, in my father's handwriting, were four words.

Still safe. Thank God.

My knees weakened.

Carter caught my elbow.

Then Samuel called from the bedroom.

"Audrey."

Something in his voice made us run.

A desk stood beneath the window.

Its drawers were open.

Papers had been scattered across the floor.

On the wall above it was a dark brown stain.

Old.

Carter stared.

"Is that blood?"

Samuel didn't answer.

I saw something half hidden beneath the desk.

A metal box.

We pulled it out.

Inside were several notebooks.

A recorder.

And a sealed envelope.

The envelope had my name on it.

Another letter.

But this one was dated October 14, 2018.

The day after Richard returned home with blood on his coat.

I tore it open.

Audrey,

If you ever reach this cabin, then Richard has either failed to stop you or finally decided the truth costs him less than another lie.

My hands trembled.

The next line made me stop breathing.

I am leaving tonight because Richard found me again.
