I sat in the back with the document box on my knees. Carter took the passenger seat. Eleanor and Madison stayed behind, although Madison made Carter promise to call the moment we learned anything.

Richard did not try to stop us.

That worried me more than another confrontation would have.

He stood near the east gate as we drove away, one hand in his pocket, watching the car until the trees hid him from view.

Carter noticed too.

"He's letting us go."

Samuel kept his eyes on the road.

"Richard rarely lets anyone do anything."

"Then why isn't he following?"

"He may be."

I turned around.

A black sedan entered the road several hundred yards behind us.

Carter saw it.

"That's not Dad's car."

Samuel changed lanes.

The sedan changed too.

"Could be security."

"Does Richard have private security?" I asked.

Carter hesitated.

"Sometimes."

"That's comforting."

Samuel took the next exit without signaling.

The sedan continued straight.

Maybe coincidence.

Maybe not.

Nobody relaxed.

For the first twenty minutes, Carter barely spoke. He stared out the window while Connecticut gave way to denser traffic and steel.

Eventually he said, "Why didn't my mother tell us about Daniel?"

Samuel answered, "Ask her."

"I did."

"What did she say?"

"That Dad forbade it."

Samuel's mouth tightened.

"Then you already have your answer."

Carter turned toward him.

"You don't like my father."

"No."

"Did you ever?"

"Once."

That surprised me.

Samuel continued.

"Richard was charismatic when he was young. Ambitious. He could persuade people that whatever he wanted was also what they wanted."

"What changed?"

"Success."

I watched highway barriers slide past.

"Or maybe success just removed the need to pretend."

Samuel glanced at me in the mirror.

"Daniel used to say something similar."

I looked down at the letter on my lap.

The paper was soft from age.

"Tell me about him."

Samuel's expression softened.

"Your father?"

"Yes."

"What do you want to know?"

"Anything not connected to Richard."

That request broke something open inside me.

For twenty-two years, nearly every story about Daniel Blackwell ended with failure.

He lost the company.

He disappeared.

He died.

Samuel gave me something else.

"He hated olives."

I blinked.

"What?"

"He ordered martinis because he thought successful businessmen were supposed to drink them, then handed me the olives."

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

Carter looked back.

Samuel continued.

"He sang badly. Knew it too. Never cared."

"What music?"

"Springsteen mostly."

My throat tightened.

"My aunt said he loved Springsteen."

"Your aunt was right."

"Anything else?"

"He carried photographs of you."

I looked down.

"After he left?"

"Every time I saw him."

My eyes burned.

I turned toward the window.

Samuel let the silence sit.

Eventually Carter said quietly, "He didn't abandon you."

I looked at him.

"We don't know that yet."

"He wrote that he was protecting you."

"He also stayed gone."

"Maybe he had a reason."

"Reasons don't undo childhood."

Carter nodded.

"No."

For once, he did not try to solve what I felt.

I appreciated that.

Samuel parked beneath an office tower in Lower Manhattan shortly after one. Elias Warren's firm occupied three floors overlooking the East River, with glass walls, pale wood, and the kind of reception desk designed to make ordinary people lower their voices.

The receptionist recognized Samuel immediately.

"Mr. Warren is expecting you."

I looked at Samuel.

"You called ahead?"

"From the car."

"When?"

"While you and Carter were arguing about whether your father liked baseball."

"I wasn't arguing."

"You were wrong."

Carter almost smiled.

The moment vanished when a tall man entered from the hallway.

Elias Warren looked around seventy. Silver hair brushed back from a narrow face. His navy suit was expensive but not flashy. He carried no papers.

His eyes went directly to me.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, "You have Daniel's eyes."

I hated the sentence instantly.

Not because it was cruel.

Because I had heard variations from adults my entire childhood and never known whether they were consoling me or reminding themselves.

"You knew I was coming?"

"Samuel called."

"Before today, did you know who I was?"

"Yes."

"Did you send the messages?"

"No."

I looked at Samuel.

He shook his head.

My pulse changed.

"Then who did?"

Elias opened the conference-room door.

"We should sit."

"No."

He stopped.

"I've spent all morning being told to sit while men decide what I'm allowed to know."

Something almost amused passed through his face.

"Daniel definitely would have liked you."

"Please stop telling me what my father would have liked and tell me whether he's alive."

Elias's face became serious.

"Come inside."

This time I followed.

The room overlooked the river.

Carter sat beside me.

Samuel remained standing near the door.

Elias took the chair opposite us.

"Your father survived the night at the Madison House."

The sentence was so direct that I almost failed to understand it.

"Richard went there."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"They fought."

"Physically?"

"Yes."

"Did Richard try to kill him?"

Elias's jaw tightened.

"I don't know what Richard intended."

"What did he do?"

"Daniel confronted him with records proving money had been diverted through subcontractors controlled by Richard."

I glanced at Samuel.

He nodded.

"Richard demanded the documents."

"Daniel refused?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"The argument became physical. Daniel was injured."

"How badly?"

"Fractured ribs. Head wound."

Carter closed his eyes.

"Did my father do that?"

Elias looked at him.

"Richard struck Daniel with a lamp."

My stomach turned.

"Then what?"

"Daniel escaped through the service stairwell."

"How?"

"A hotel employee helped him."

"Who?"

"Her name was Linda Mercer."

"Where is she?"

"Dead. Cancer, six years ago."

Another witness gone.

"Did Richard know Daniel survived?"

"Not immediately."

"Then why disappear?"

"Because by morning, Richard had reported that Daniel stole company funds and fled."

"Meaning my father looked guilty."

"Yes."

"Couldn't he go to the police?"

"He could have."

"But?"

Elias leaned back.

"Daniel made a decision I disagreed with."

"What decision?"

"To disappear temporarily while we built a criminal case."

"Temporarily."

The word tasted bitter.

"Twenty-two years is a strange definition."

Elias held my gaze.

"Yes."

I felt anger rising.

"Where was he?"

"Boston first. Then Montreal."

"Why Canada?"

"Privacy."

"Did Richard find him?"

"Eventually."

"When?"

"Two thousand eight."

I thought of Samuel's letter.

"The year he wrote Samuel."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Elias looked toward the window.

"Richard threatened you."

Everything in me stopped.

"What?"

"Not directly. Not to you."

"What did he say?"

"He sent Daniel photographs."

My skin went cold.

"Of me?"

"Leaving school. At your aunt's house. Riding a bicycle."

I looked at Samuel.

He seemed stunned.

"You never told me that," he said.

Elias nodded.

"Daniel asked me not to."

My voice sounded distant.

"Richard had someone watching me."

"For a period."

"How old was I?"

"Twelve."

Carter cursed under his breath.

I stood and walked to the window.

I remembered being twelve.

Braces.

A purple backpack.

Arguing with Aunt Marjorie about wearing a helmet.

Somewhere, someone had been photographing me because my father's former partner wanted him silent.

"Was that why he stayed away?"

"Yes."

I turned.

"Then why didn't he take me somewhere?"

"Daniel believed moving you would confirm he was alive and make you a permanent target."

"I deserved a choice."

"You did."

"Did he know what my aunt told me?"

"Not at first."

"That he was dead?"

Elias's face tightened.

"Yes."

"When he learned, he wanted to correct it."

"But didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Richard's surveillance had started again."

Anger overtook grief.

"So everyone decided for me."

"No one decision explains twenty-two years."

"Then start explaining."

Elias nodded slowly.

He rose.

"Come with me."

We followed him through a private office to a smaller room with no windows.

A safe was built into the wall behind a painting.

Elias entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside were document cases, digital drives, and three sealed envelopes.

He removed a black binder.

"Daniel gave me this in 2008."

I opened it.

The first pages were corporate documents.

Then bank records.

Then photographs of invoices.

Samuel stepped closer.

"These are originals."

"Yes."

I turned another page.

A list of subcontractors appeared.

Five names.

Carter leaned beside me.

"I recognize two."

"Current Sterling vendors?"

"Yes."

Elias nodded.

"Richard kept using some of the same structures."

Carter's face darkened.

"What structures?"

"Companies partly controlled through nominees."

"For what?"

"Moving profits out of Sterling while telling minority investors the projects were less profitable than they actually were."

Carter read faster.

"This could be fraud."

"It could."

"Why hasn't anyone prosecuted him?"

"Because Daniel's evidence was incomplete and the statute of limitations complicates older conduct."

"And newer conduct?"

Elias looked at him.

"That's one reason Blackwell Capital exists."

I looked up.

"Who owns it?"

Elias did not answer.

I closed the binder.

"I'm done with half answers."

He looked at Samuel.

Samuel nodded.

Elias took a breath.

"Blackwell Capital was created with funds belonging to Daniel."

My heart hammered.

"So he owns it."

"Not exactly."

"What does that mean?"

"Daniel transferred the assets into a trust."

"For whom?"

Elias looked directly at me.

"For you."

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Initially, a little over eleven million."

I nearly laughed from disbelief.

"I don't have eleven million dollars."

"You do."

"No, I don't."

"You have substantially more now."

Carter stared at me.

I ignored him.

"How much?"

Elias opened another file.

"Blackwell Capital's current assets fluctuate, but the trust controls approximately forty-seven million dollars in liquid and investment assets, excluding the Sterling debt."

My mouth went dry.

"And I own it?"

"Beneficially."

"Who manages it?"

"I do, with two co-trustees."

"Why wasn't I told?"

"Daniel set conditions."

"Of course he did."

My voice sharpened.

"Another man deciding when I'm old enough to know my own life."

Elias absorbed that.

"You're right to be angry."

"What were the conditions?"

"That disclosure occur if Richard attempted to harm you, if you independently uncovered the connection, or if the debt strategy reached enforcement."

I touched my bruised cheek.

Elias saw.

His face changed.

"He hit you?"

"At breakfast."

Samuel looked away.

Carter's jaw tightened.

"That's why you're telling me now."

"Partly."

"And the debt?"

"Richard's company missed a covenant three weeks ago."

Carter turned sharply.

"What?"

"You didn't know?"

"No."

Elias looked unsurprised.

"Blackwell Capital can accelerate the full obligation."

"Thirty million."

"Yes."

I stared at the binder.

"So my trust owns Richard's debt."

"Yes."

"And it owns evidence that my father was the original majority shareholder."

"Yes."

"And Richard doesn't know the trust belongs to me."

"No."

My breathing slowed.

For the first time all day, the pieces stopped feeling random.

This was not revenge assembled overnight.

My father had built something slowly.

Protection.

Leverage.

A way to recover what had been taken if Richard ever reached for me.

I looked at Elias.

"Where is Daniel?"

His expression changed.

There it was.

The question he had hoped I would postpone.

"Audrey."

"Where is my father?"

"I haven't seen him in eight years."

"When was the last time?"

"2018."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

The room seemed to vanish around that word.

"Where?"

"Vermont."

"Why haven't you seen him?"

"He disappeared again."

"From Richard?"

"We don't know."

"Did he contact you afterward?"

"Once."

"When?"

"2020."

"What did he say?"

Elias walked back to the safe.

He removed one of the sealed envelopes.

My name was written on the front.

Audrey.

My father's handwriting.

Elias held it out.

"He told me to give you this only when the trust became yours to control."

My hands trembled as I took it.

"Is that now?"

"Yes."

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet.

My dearest Audrey,

If you are reading this, then either Richard finally reached for you, or you found the truth without anyone's help. I prayed neither would happen.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Carter touched my arm lightly.

I didn't pull away.

I forced myself to continue.

Do not confuse what I left you with justice. Money can recover property. Documents can correct a record. Neither can return years. I stayed away because I believed distance kept you safe. Whether that choice was cowardice or love, you have the right to decide for yourself.

At the bottom was one final line.

If Richard tells you I am dead, ask him what happened at Lake Briar in October 2018.

I looked up.

"Elias."

He saw the line.

His face emptied.

"What is Lake Briar?"

He did not answer.

Samuel whispered, "Oh, God."

I turned to him.

"You know it?"

Samuel stared at the letter.

"Daniel had a cabin there."

Carter stood.

"In Vermont?"

Samuel nodded.

I looked back at Elias.

"Why does my father tell me to ask Richard what happened there?"

Elias's silence gave me the first answer.

Richard had found my father again in 2018.

And whatever happened at Lake Briar was the reason nobody had seen Daniel Blackwell since.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Richard Called Before We Reached Vermont, and One Sentence Proved He Knew Exactly What Had Happened at Lake Briar

We left the Sterling property twenty minutes later in Samuel's sedan.
