Richard stood near the dining-room doorway. Madison had moved several feet back, but her phone remained in her hand. Carter was between his father and the staircase.

Nobody explained why Richard had shouted for me.

I stopped on the final step. "What happened?"

Richard pointed toward the table.

My handbag sat there.

I had left it on the back of my chair.

Beside it lay a small photograph.

My stomach tightened.

It was not the photograph I had hidden in the folder upstairs, but another copy I had kept in my wallet for years. My father stood beside a half-built commercial structure, one hand resting on the shoulder of a much younger Richard Sterling.

Apparently it had slipped from my bag.

Richard picked it up.

"Where did you get this?"

His voice was different now.

The patriarch who had lectured me about breakfast etiquette was gone. Something harsher had replaced him.

I walked toward him.

"Give it back."

"Answer me."

"It's mine."

"I asked where you got it."

"And I said give it back."

Carter looked between us. "Dad, what's the big deal?"

Richard ignored him.

His thumb covered my father's face.

I hated that.

I reached for the photograph.

Richard pulled it away.

"Who gave this to you?"

"My father."

His eyes snapped to mine.

For one instant, the entire room seemed to narrow around us.

"Your father?"

"Yes."

Madison frowned. "I thought your father was dead."

"He is."

At least that was what I had believed for most of my life.

Richard stared at the picture again.

Eleanor had stopped picking up the broken porcelain.

She was watching him.

Not me.

Him.

"Richard," she said quietly.

He turned.

Something passed between them.

A warning old enough that neither needed to explain it.

Carter noticed.

"What is going on?"

Richard placed the photograph on the table.

"Nothing."

I almost laughed.

"You shouted my name across the house because of nothing?"

He looked at me.

"You've been asking questions."

It wasn't a question.

Carter turned toward me. "What questions?"

I kept my eyes on Richard.

"The sort people ask before joining a family."

"About my company?"

"About your history."

Richard's face hardened.

"My history is none of your concern."

"It becomes my concern when I'm marrying your son."

"You already married him."

"Yes."

His gaze sharpened.

"And perhaps that's exactly what you wanted."

Carter stepped forward. "Dad, stop."

Richard turned on him. "You stay out of this."

For the first time, Carter did not immediately retreat.

"She's my wife."

"And you're my son."

The words landed like a command.

Carter's shoulders tightened.

I watched the transformation happen in front of me. My husband had approached as an adult defending his wife. One sentence from Richard turned him back into a boy waiting for permission.

I hated Richard for doing it.

I was beginning to hate Carter for allowing it.

Richard faced me again.

"Tell me what you know about Sterling Construction."

"Why?"

"Because I'm asking."

"That's not a reason."

Madison muttered, "God, she never stops."

I looked at her phone.

The camera lens was aimed toward us.

"Are you recording this?"

Her hand lowered slightly.

"No."

"Then put your phone away."

"Don't tell me what to do in my own house."

Richard almost smiled.

There it was again.

Permission.

Madison could insult me. Richard could interrogate me. Carter could ask me to remain calm. Eleanor could quietly clean whatever shattered.

My assigned role was becoming obvious.

I was supposed to absorb it.

I picked up my photograph.

Richard grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

The shock came before the pain.

I looked down at his fingers.

Then up at him.

"Let go."

"Not until you answer me."

Carter said, "Dad."

Richard's grip tightened.

"Let go of my wife."

It was the strongest thing Carter had said all morning.

Richard released me.

A red band remained around my wrist.

I rubbed it once.

Then I looked at Carter.

"Thank you."

He nodded, but his relief came too quickly, as though he believed the danger had passed.

It hadn't.

Richard pointed toward the photograph.

"I want that out of my house."

"No."

His eyebrows lifted.

"What did you say?"

"It's my photograph."

"That man has no place here."

My heartbeat slowed.

Not accelerated.

Slowed.

I had spent three months wondering whether the connection between Richard and my father was coincidence, ordinary business history, or something uglier.

Richard had just answered part of that question.

"You knew him."

Richard said nothing.

Eleanor whispered, "Audrey."

I turned to her.

Her face had gone pale.

"How did Richard know my father?"

She looked at her husband.

Wrong move.

Richard saw it.

"Eleanor, go upstairs."

She stood carefully.

"I think she deserves—"

"Upstairs."

Carter stared at his mother.

"Mom?"

Eleanor lowered her head.

I stepped into her path before she could leave.

"No. Please."

Richard's voice rose.

"Move."

I ignored him.

"Eleanor, what happened between Richard and Daniel Blackwell?"

Her lips parted.

Richard crossed the room.

"Enough."

He seized my shoulder and pulled me away from Eleanor.

I spun toward him.

"Don't touch me."

"I told you to stop."

"And I told you not to touch me."

Madison's phone rose again.

Carter stepped closer. "Dad, everyone needs to calm down."

Everyone.

I looked at him.

"Everyone?"

He realized too late what he had said.

"Audrey, I didn't mean—"

Richard jabbed a finger toward the staircase.

"You will go upstairs, apologize to my wife for upsetting her, and then apologize to this family."

I stared at him.

"For what?"

"For disrespecting me in my own home."

"No."

Carter whispered, "Audrey."

I did not look at him.

Richard moved closer.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

"You think marriage gives you permission to walk into this house and challenge everything?"

"No. Being an adult gives me permission to refuse ridiculous orders."

His nostrils flared.

Eleanor whispered his name.

Richard didn't hear her.

Or chose not to.

"You married into the Sterling family two days ago."

"Yes."

"You carry my son's name."

"That doesn't make me yours."

His face changed.

I saw the blow coming.

Not early enough to move.

His palm struck the left side of my face with a flat crack that seemed impossibly loud in the marble room.

My head snapped sideways.

For several seconds, there was no pain.

Only heat.

A bright, stunning heat spreading from my cheek to my ear.

Nobody moved.

I tasted blood where my teeth had caught the inside of my lip.

Then I heard Madison inhale.

Her phone was still raised.

Recording.

I turned my face slowly back toward Richard.

His hand remained half lifted.

He did not look shocked by what he had done.

That was what frightened me.

He looked satisfied.

As though he had corrected something.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Carter stared at his father.

"Jesus Christ."

Richard lowered his hand.

"Perhaps now she'll understand."

Carter moved.

I thought he was going to hit him.

Instead he stopped two feet away.

"Dad, you can't do that."

Richard looked almost bored.

"She was hysterical."

I laughed.

The sound surprised all of us.

My cheek throbbed.

"Hysterical?"

Richard looked at me.

"You were warned."

Carter turned toward me. "Audrey, are you okay?"

I stared at him.

His father had just hit me.

And Carter was asking whether I was okay.

"I want you to answer one question."

"Of course."

"What are you going to do?"

His expression changed.

"About what?"

I couldn't believe he asked.

"About your father."

Carter looked toward Richard.

That glance again.

That instinctive check.

I knew the answer before he spoke.

"He's going to apologize."

Richard laughed once.

"No, I'm not."

Carter's face reddened. "Dad."

"She provoked me."

My cheek pulsed with each heartbeat.

I looked at Carter.

"And if he doesn't apologize?"

"We're all angry."

"Don't."

"What?"

"Don't include me in what he did."

"I'm not."

"You just did."

Carter ran a hand through his hair.

"Audrey, please. We got married two days ago."

"Exactly."

"We can fix this."

"How?"

He looked helpless.

"Give me a minute."

Richard said, "Carter, stop embarrassing yourself."

My husband turned.

Richard continued in the same tone he might have used discussing a late employee.

"Your wife needs boundaries. If you don't establish them now, you'll spend your marriage being controlled by her."

Carter clenched his jaw.

"Dad, don't."

"Look at you. She's been in this family forty-eight hours and you're already asking permission to defend me."

"I am not."

"Then act like my son."

I waited.

Carter said nothing.

That silence hurt more than the slap.

I touched my cheek.

Madison was still recording.

I looked directly into her camera.

"Make sure you save that."

Her phone lowered.

"What?"

"The recording."

"I wasn't recording."

"Yes, you were."

Richard turned sharply toward her.

"Madison."

She looked suddenly nervous.

"I was just—"

"Give me the phone."

"No."

"Now."

I smiled despite the ache in my face.

Interesting.

Richard was frightened of the recording.

That mattered.

I filed it away.

Madison stepped backward.

"I didn't get everything."

"You got enough," I said.

Richard glared at me.

"You need to leave."

Carter turned toward him. "No."

Richard looked at his son.

"No?"

"She's my wife."

"Then take her somewhere until she learns how to behave."

I looked at Carter.

He closed his eyes.

Only for a moment.

Then he said the sentence that changed our marriage.

"Audrey, maybe we should go upstairs and give Dad some time."

I stared at him.

"Give him time?"

"He shouldn't have hit you."

"No, he shouldn't have."

"I know."

"But?"

"There is no but."

"There always is when someone says it that way."

Carter lowered his voice.

"Please don't make this worse."

I felt something inside me become very still.

I removed my wedding ring.

His eyes widened.

"Audrey."

I placed the ring in my palm.

"I need to pack."

"Don't do this."

"I'm not doing anything."

"You're taking off your ring."

"Because my finger suddenly feels very heavy."

His face crumpled.

For half a second, I wanted to comfort him.

Habit is cruel that way.

Richard spoke behind him.

"If she walks out now, don't chase her."

Carter turned.

"Dad, shut up."

Everyone froze.

Even Richard.

Carter's hands shook.

"Just shut up."

It was the first genuine act of defiance I had seen from him.

It came one minute too late.

I walked upstairs.

This time nobody followed.

Inside the bedroom, I locked the door and sat on the edge of the bed.

My hands began trembling only then.

I pressed my palm against my cheek and stared at the folder I had left beside the suitcase.

Three months earlier, I had promised myself I would never use what was inside unless I discovered Richard had deliberately harmed my father.

I had also promised myself Carter would never pay for his father's sins.

Both promises suddenly felt dangerously naive.

I opened the folder.

On top sat the debt agreement.

Thirty million dollars.

Below it was a corporate assignment involving Sterling Holdings.

And beneath that, the photograph Richard had never known I possessed.

My father stood beside him at a construction site twenty-two years earlier.

On the back, in my father's handwriting, were seven words I had spent months trying to understand.

Richard will take everything if I let him.

I heard footsteps outside the bedroom.

Then Carter knocked.

"Audrey?"

I didn't answer.

"Please open the door."

I turned another page.

Richard Sterling's signature appeared at the bottom.

I had seen that signature dozens of times while researching him.

But beside it was another name.

Daniel Blackwell.

My father.

A signature I knew was false.

Because the document had been dated three weeks after the day I had always been told my father disappeared.

I looked toward the locked door.

Carter knocked again.

"Audrey, please."

I closed the folder.

Then I made my decision.

I would not leave the Sterling house yet.

Not until I learned why Richard Sterling had forged a dead man's name onto a thirty-million-dollar transaction.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Stayed in the House for One Reason, and Richard’s Fear of an Old Photograph Told Me Where to Start Digging

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, Eleanor was crouched beside a broken coffee cup, gathering porcelain with trembling fingers.
