“So I was leverage.”

Mom looked at her.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, sweetheart.”

“Don’t call me that right now.”

Mom stopped.

Ramirez asked about Edward’s hidden house.

Mom provided directions.

She had been there twice.

The archive was behind a false wall in the basement.

“When were you last there?”

“Eight years ago.”

“Could it have moved?”

“Yes.”

“Why believe it hasn’t?”

“Because Edward never trusted banks for the things that could destroy him.”

Dad gave a hollow laugh.

“He taught us all well.”

Ramirez left to obtain the necessary legal process and coordinate with another jurisdiction.

We were told to stay.

Again.

This time I did.

I sat on the porch with Olivia.

Night had fallen.

She wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

“Do you hate Mom?”

I thought about it.

“I don’t know what I feel.”

“I do.”

“What?”

“Everything.”

That was accurate.

After a while Dad joined us.

He did not sit.

He leaned against the railing.

“I owe both of you an apology that is too small to matter.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You’re not my father.”

He flinched.

Then she added, “But you are.”

His face broke.

She looked away before he could answer.

That was all she could give him.

Near midnight Ramirez called.

Police had reached Edward’s hidden property.

The house was empty.

The basement wall existed.

So did the concealed room.

But the archive was gone.

My stomach dropped.

“All of it?”

“Almost.”

“What was left?”

“Empty shelving. Burned paper in a fireplace. Several damaged drives.”

“Can they recover them?”

“Possibly.”

I closed my eyes.

Again we had arrived late.

Then Ramirez said, “There was one other thing.”

“What?”

“A body.”

Everyone on the porch went still.

“Who?”

“Older male. Identification is pending.”

Dad whispered, “Edward?”

Ramirez answered carefully.

“We don’t know yet.”

But an hour later we did.

The dead man was Charles Avery.

And according to the preliminary scene assessment, he had not died naturally.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Charles Was Found Dead Inside Edward’s Hidden House, and the Surviving Recording Showed Which Man Had Started Killing Witnesses Again

Olivia called Mom before we left Wisconsin.
