She had never been abducted.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had counted on Dad\u2019s fear doing the rest.<\/p>\n<p>It almost had.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the sanctuary, the church looked wounded.<\/p>\n<p>One pew had a bullet gouge.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers had fallen near the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Our ceremony programs remained stacked by the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Mom walked toward the altar.<\/p>\n<p>She picked one up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbigail Mercer and Lincoln Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat aged badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is your legal name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLincoln Alexander Cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny more surprises?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy middle name is unfortunately real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTragic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea entered from outside with investigators.<\/p>\n<p>When she saw us standing beneath the wedding flowers, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two have the worst timing imaginable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>The priest had long since left.<\/p>\n<p>Most guests were gone.<\/p>\n<p>Our families were being interviewed by federal agents.<\/p>\n<p>Our church floor contained a bullet hole.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evelyn came toward us carrying the surviving steel case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something you should see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside Eleanor\u2019s remaining letters, investigators had found a thin sealed envelope stuck beneath the lining.<\/p>\n<p>Addressed to Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln opened it because Richard had authorized him to.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s final preserved letter contained only one page.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom she had written:<\/p>\n<p>Samuel believes the trust can only be claimed through the original archive. He is wrong.
