Thomas began taking a portion for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Thomas learned the scheme from my grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how much Richard knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All eyes moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He stood in the vault doorway.<\/p>\n<p>For once, the billionaire had no answer ready.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at his son.<\/p>\n<p>His silence lasted too long.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck harder than denial.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked older than he had an hour earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI discovered part of it after Thomas disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you covered it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI contained it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was to thousands of employees whose jobs would have vanished if Cross Global collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let everyone believe Thomas acted alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did commit crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you buried that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the families gathered around lies for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer lies.<\/p>\n<p>Cross lies.<\/p>\n<p>Each defended as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Each justified as protection.<\/p>\n<p>Each eventually handed down to children who never consented to carrying them.<\/p>\n<p>An investigator approached Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cross, we\u2019ll need to discuss this separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>His face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because his father might have committed a prosecutable crime.<\/p>\n<p>Because the man he had spent his life resisting had just become something harder to resist cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Human.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated again.<\/p>\n<p>This time the signal had returned.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>The message contained a photograph of a flash drive sealed inside an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Found it.<\/p>\n<p>Then another line.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick wants to talk to you before he talks to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom saw too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the message.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the man being led away down the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Richard Cross, waiting to answer questions about crimes committed before Lincoln and I were old enough to understand what money could make people justify.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second message arrived from Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>I do.<\/p>\n<p>He says Thomas wasn\u2019t the person who gave him the fake Cross commitment letter.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea\u2019s answer appeared a moment later.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9009\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Kendrick Claimed My Father Supplied the Forged Letter, Forcing Us to Confront the Difference Between a Lie and a Carefully Built Trap<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The device against my neck made a faint electrical hum.
