Blue. Maybe the size of a hardcover book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you carry it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeavy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot very.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hear anything inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you bury it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The backyard had been enormous to a ten-year-old. In reality it covered less than half an acre, but twenty-two years of landscaping had changed nearly everything. The swing set was gone. The wooden shed had been rebuilt. Three apple trees had died. Dad had installed a stone terrace and Mom had expanded the flower beds twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the rear windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere used to be five apple trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere they in a line?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore or less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne leaned sideways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second one from the fence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That triggered another image.<\/p>\n<p>Moonlight on grass.<\/p>\n<p>Mosquitoes whining near my ears.<\/p>\n<p>Mom holding the flashlight low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was near that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police search team redirected toward the old apple-tree line.<\/p>\n<p>While they worked, Dad kept looking at me as if a second version of our family history had opened beneath the first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she involve you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause children are overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter was ten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may have been exactly why Diana chose her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make it sound calculated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew my mother better than my father did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s becoming difficult to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard accepted the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew her during a specific period. Then larger transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never determined the full figure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than forty million dollars in today\u2019s value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he disappeared with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was what we never proved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked at the key resting in an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cB-17.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspected he stored records there, possibly access credentials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Diana knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The medic nearby reached toward him, but he waved her away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me spend twenty-two years believing my wife had once been frightened by some dishonest employer. You never came to me. Never told me Thomas might have survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife asked me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s voice turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas knew where my son went to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked up.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent photographs. Lincoln beside his mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln\u2019s face gave away almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you ever tell me that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted you to have a life that wasn\u2019t shaped by him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The irony settled between them.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I understood suddenly that every family in the room had been organized around silence, each generation insisting secrecy was protection.<\/p>\n<p>An officer entered through the back door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone moved at once.<\/p>\n<p>The excavation site was near the remains of the old leaning apple tree, now only a low stump half hidden beneath ivy. Investigators had removed a section of soil beside it. About eighteen inches down sat a rusted blue metal container.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The box was smaller than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Childhood had enlarged it.<\/p>\n<p>An evidence technician photographed it before lifting it from the earth. Rust covered the corners, but the lid remained sealed beneath deteriorated plastic wrapping.<\/p>\n<p>They opened it inside the garage under controlled conditions.<\/p>\n<p>I expected documents.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, there were three things.<\/p>\n<p>A small cassette tape.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>And a child\u2019s plastic bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>The bracelet belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>Pink beads.<\/p>\n<p>White letters spelling ABBY.<\/p>\n<p>I touched my wrist unconsciously.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cI remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>I had lost it the summer I turned ten.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had told me it probably fell off at camp.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed three adults standing outside Cross Global\u2019s old Beacon Street building.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Howard Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>Dad gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at the date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was two days after Thomas supposedly disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man had Dad\u2019s build, his hair, his face.<\/p>\n<p>But something felt wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln noticed first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re left-handed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wear your watch on your right wrist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>The man in the photograph wore his watch on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Richard picked up a magnifying lens.<\/p>\n<p>Then he swore softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t Howard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared again.<\/p>\n<p>The resemblance that I had never known existed became obvious once I knew to see it. Dad and Thomas were brothers only two years apart. In grainy photographs, from a distance, they could pass for each other.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood between Thomas and another man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s the third person?\u201d Lincoln asked.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>It meant something to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Martin Vale?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first business partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another door in the past opened.<\/p>\n<p>Before Mercer Properties became Dad\u2019s company, he had founded a smaller firm with Martin Vale. I knew the story only vaguely. The partnership ended badly. Martin moved overseas. Dad rebuilt alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-one years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne year after Thomas disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police had no suitable player immediately available, but Dad did.<\/p>\n<p>Of course he did.<\/p>\n<p>My father threw nothing away if it still worked.<\/p>\n<p>An old stereo system sat in the basement beside boxes of tax records and Christmas decorations. An officer carried the tape downstairs while the rest of us followed.<\/p>\n<p>The cassette clicked into place.<\/p>\n<p>Static.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother\u2019s younger voice filled the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are hearing this, then something has gone wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gripped the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas believes Martin is helping him. Martin believes Thomas is helping him. Neither of them understands that each plans to keep the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s recorded voice remained controlled, but I heard fear beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoward cannot know everything. He would confront Thomas, and Thomas would use that against him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shut his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI copied the ledgers. I copied the transfer instructions. I copied the names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I keep them at Cross, Thomas will find them. If I keep them at home, Martin will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another hiss of tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I divided them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cB-17.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne set,\u201d Richard said.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key is with Howard, though he does not know it. The second set is where Abby put it.
