The main residence seemed to grow from the landscape itself, gray stone and tall windows facing the water.<\/p>\n<p>I barely noticed.<\/p>\n<p>My wedding dress was still on.<\/p>\n<p>My veil lay folded beside me in the car.<\/p>\n<p>I should have been standing in a church.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I was entering the home of the billionaire whose son I had intended to marry without knowing his real name.<\/p>\n<p>Richard met us at the door.<\/p>\n<p>Up close, he looked less like the photographs I had seen in newspapers and more like an exhausted father. Someone was selling them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo competitors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard removed an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Several people stood outside an office building.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to a man near the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was Thomas Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened at the surname.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father\u2019s older brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy uncle Thomas died before I was old enough to remember him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what your family was told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln stepped closer to the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Thomas do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a senior executive attached to one of our investment divisions. Brilliant. Charming. They never recovered his body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed colder despite the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does any of this have to do with Kendrick?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what troubled me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard returned to the desk and removed several newer documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago, somebody began using techniques that resembled Thomas Mercer\u2019s old operation. Similar shell structures. Similar methods for approaching investors. Similar language in falsified documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln looked at the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou suspected Kendrick was connected to Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot initially. Kendrick was simply one name appearing repeatedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you put me in Abby\u2019s building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you there was a useful security position available there because several people of interest passed through that property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave you an opportunity you already wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou omitted the real reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at him steadily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed at the symmetry.<\/p>\n<p>A father hiding something enormous from his son.<\/p>\n<p>A son hiding something enormous from his fianc\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently wealth did not improve communication.<\/p>\n<p>Richard opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Lincoln began seeing Abby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t even know her connection to Kendrick,\u201d Lincoln said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou investigated me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI verified who you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to know whether the relationship compromised what we were watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt complicated everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finished being discussed like a variable in someone else\u2019s investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That immediate agreement surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Richard closed the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is why I am telling you now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelling me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed one final envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the others, this one was old. Creased.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Diana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received this twenty-two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard placed it in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The paper inside smelled faintly of dust.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s handwriting covered two pages.<\/p>\n<p>I read only the first few lines before my hands began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Richard,<\/p>\n<p>Thomas knows I found the records. Howard doesn\u2019t understand how dangerous this is. If anything happens, the copies cannot disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat copies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard sat opposite me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never found them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything Thomas stole.
