Questions flew before my shoes touched the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cross!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Mercer!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know your fianc\u00e9 was Lincoln Cross?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Kendrick Mercer under investigation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing the name spoken publicly made everything suddenly real.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln came beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n<p>We walked through the lobby.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom doors stood open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the magnificent celebration Chelsea had spent months constructing was collapsing in real time.<\/p>\n<p>Guests clustered around tables, whispering. Several were leaving. Champagne glasses sat untouched. The flower wall remained perfect behind a room that no longer was.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Cross stood near two attorneys.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick was several yards away, white-faced.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea\u2019s expensive dress had a champagne stain across one side.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was crying.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked twenty years older than he had three weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chelsea saw us.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved from my wedding dress to Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze dropped to his suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou aren\u2019t a security guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick turned.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition spread across his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln\u2019s voice remained controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew enough to ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick pointed at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou set me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You made representations using my father\u2019s company. Nobody forced you to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s face twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you\u2019re better than me because you were born into money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln took one step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I think choices still belong to the person who makes them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked around wildly.<\/p>\n<p>Then his eyes landed on my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoward, tell them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell them you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom became silent.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick realized his mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.
