He didn't want inheritance to become obligation."

"What does the land trust do?"

"If you voluntarily relinquish Hale Meridian, the trust separates certain family assets from the operating company."

"North Harbor?"

"Yes."

"Who receives it?"

A pause.

"You."

I stared at the phone.

Personally.

North Harbor wasn't merely corporate property.

My grandfather had apparently structured a hidden mechanism allowing it to pass directly to me if I chose to leave the company.

That made the fraudulent claim even more dangerous.

If Martin and Harbor Crown captured or clouded title before the trust mechanism was revealed, they could attack both Hale Meridian and my personal inheritance.

"Why pay Martin?"

"He discovered the trust."

"How?"

"I don't know."

"And you paid him?"

"He threatened to tell Charles Voss."

I looked at Marcus.

"Margaret, Charles already knows."

Silence.

"What?"

"His family trust owns eighteen percent of Harbor Crown's parent."

"No."

"Yes."

For the first time, Margaret sounded genuinely shocked.

"He told me he had no financial connection."

"Apparently everyone in this story has enjoyed incomplete disclosure."

She didn't respond.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"Because Martin contacted me."

Ruiz leaned toward the phone.

"When?"

Margaret heard her.

"Detective?"

"Yes."

Margaret hesitated.

"Twenty minutes ago."

"What did he say?"

"He wants Samuel's original land-trust certificate."

"Do you have it?"

"Yes."

Nora swore.

Ruiz asked, "Where are you taking it?"

Margaret said nothing.

"Margaret, do not meet him."

"I don't have a choice."

"Yes, you do."

"No."

Her voice cracked for the first time.

"He has my daughter."

The room went silent.

I knew Margaret had one daughter.

Claire.

Thirty-one.

A pediatric nurse.

"Have you spoken to Claire?"

"No."

"How do you know Martin has her?"

"He sent a photograph."

Ruiz immediately requested it.

Margaret forwarded the message.

Nora's phone received the image through Ruiz.

Claire sat in what appeared to be an empty office, wrists bound loosely in front of her.

A newspaper lay on the table beside her.

Today's date visible.

Ethan stood.

"He's kidnapping people over land?"

Ruiz's expression hardened.

"Now we know why Martin ran."

She began issuing instructions.

I stayed on the phone.

"Margaret, tell us where you're going."

"I can't risk Claire."

"If you give Martin that certificate, you don't know he'll release her."

"I know."

"Then help us."

Silence.

Finally, she whispered, "Old Mercer Atlantic warehouse."

Marcus looked up.

"North Harbor?"

"Yes."

Ruiz was already moving.

"We go with police."

Margaret objected.

"No."

But Ruiz had enough.

Officers were dispatched.

I grabbed my coat.

Nora blocked me.

"You're not going."

"It's my company."

"This is now a kidnapping scene."

"It's my grandfather's warehouse."

"That doesn't make bullets respect ownership."

She was right.

I hated it.

Ruiz ordered Ethan and Lydia to remain at the townhouse.

Marcus stayed too.

Nora and I were taken to a police command location several blocks from North Harbor because I could identify historical building layouts.

The old Mercer Atlantic warehouse stood beside the river, a long brick structure my grandfather had stopped using before I joined the company.

Rain had turned the pavement black.

Police vehicles waited without lights.

Margaret's car appeared on a traffic camera approaching from the east.

Another vehicle entered from the south.

Martin's.

Ruiz received the update through her radio.

Then a third vehicle appeared.

Black SUV.

Registered to Harbor Crown Development.

Nora and I looked at each other.

"Victor?" I asked.

Ruiz checked.

"Registered corporate fleet."

The three pieces of the conspiracy were converging in one place.

Margaret.

Martin.

Harbor Crown.

But when officers finally entered the warehouse, they found only two people.

Margaret was standing beside an empty desk holding Samuel's land-trust certificate.

Claire sat nearby, frightened but unharmed.

Martin Shaw was nowhere inside.

Neither was Victor Dane.

On the desk lay a phone.

Speaker activated.

Martin's voice came through it.

"You always were predictable, Margaret."

Police searched the building.

Nothing.

The kidnapping scene had been staged remotely.

Claire told officers a masked man had brought her there and left before Margaret arrived.

Then Martin spoke again.

"Elena is listening, isn't she?"

Every person in the command room went still.

Ruiz looked
