house."

"Which is exactly why you don't run outside."

He stopped.

The old Ethan would have argued.

This one looked at my hand on his sleeve, then stepped back.

Nora called the police.

This time there was no debate about whether the matter had become criminal.

A forged dead man's signature.

Unauthorized banking access.

Missing corporate records.

A fraudulent ownership claim.

A threatening photograph taken outside my home.

Whatever had begun as Lydia's attempt to pressure me into signing documents had crossed several lines since breakfast.

The police arrived within fifteen minutes.

I gave them the recorder from the hotel.

Copies of Lydia's transfer documents.

The photograph from Martin's safe-deposit box.

The threatening message.

Nora provided a chronology.

Ethan gave them the duplicate-key story without being prompted.

When he admitted searching my office, the detective looked at him for a long moment.

"You understand you may be admitting to an offense."

"Yes."

"Do you want counsel?"

Ethan looked at Nora.

She shook her head.

"I'm Elena's attorney."

He nodded.

"I'll get my own."

That was another small change.

He was no longer expecting people protecting me to protect him too.

The detective's name was Carla Ruiz.

She had the unnerving habit of allowing silence to stretch until people filled it.

After Ethan finished, she asked, "Who told you to search the office?"

"My mother."

"Why?"

"She believed documents there would prove Elena's grandfather stole ownership from my father."

"Did she specifically ask for the succession binder?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Yes."

Ruiz wrote that down.

"Did you tell her the key broke?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"The same night."

"What did she say?"

"That she'd handle it."

I looked at him.

That detail was new.

"She said that?"

"Yes."

Ruiz noticed my reaction.

"You didn't know?"

"No."

She returned to Ethan.

"After your key broke, did you enter the office again?"

"No."

"Did your mother have access to this house?"

He looked at me.

I answered.

"She had an emergency key."

Ruiz's pen stopped.

"Had?"

"I don't know whether she still has it."

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

"She does."

I turned toward him.

"How do you know?"

"She told me."

"When?"

"Last month."

I felt anger rise again.

"You knew your mother kept a key to my house after I asked for it back?"

He swallowed.

"Yes."

Ruiz watched both of us.

"Why did Elena ask for it back?"

I answered.

"Lydia came in without telling us twice."

"Did you change the locks?"

"No."

I hated how obvious the mistake sounded now.

Ruiz asked Ethan, "Did your mother know the succession binder was in the cabinet?"

"She knew I found a binder."

"Did you tell her what it contained?"

"I couldn't read most of it because the cabinet stayed locked."

"But you saw the binder?"

"Through the glass panel."

I remembered.

The cabinet doors were solid at the bottom, glass at the top.

The succession binder sat low enough that its spine could be seen.

Ruiz wrote again.

"So Lydia had a key to the house, knew the office location, knew the cabinet contained a succession binder, and told you she'd handle the broken cabinet key."

"Yes."

It didn't prove she removed the pages.

But it made her earlier denial much harder to believe.

The detective asked about Richard's signature stamp.

Ethan described it.

"Where was it kept?"

"Mom's home office."

"Who knew?"

"Me. Martin. Probably Dad's former assistant."

"Anyone else?"

"I don't know."

Ruiz asked for Lydia's address.

Then she left two officers at the townhouse and drove to obtain consent or a warrant depending on whether Lydia cooperated.

She didn't.

An hour later, Lydia arrived with a criminal-defense attorney.

She walked into my dining room and stopped when she saw Ethan.

"You gave them my address."

"Yes."

"You told them about the stamp."

"Yes."

Her eyes filled with fury.

"You had no right."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Apparently rights only matter when they're yours."

Her attorney touched her elbow.

"Lydia."

She stopped.

The lawyer introduced himself as Daniel Price.

Unlike Martin, he appeared to understand the danger immediately.

"My client is willing to provide information regarding Martin Shaw."

Ruiz sat opposite him.

"In exchange for?"

"At this point, nothing."

Ruiz smiled slightly.

"That's refreshing."

Price ignored the comment.

"Lydia maintains she did not sign the Mercer Atlantic shareholder affidavit."

"Did she authorize Martin to sign for her?"

"No."

"Did she provide him Richard Hale's signature stamp?"

"No."

"Did she know he possessed it?"

"No."

Ruiz looked at Lydia.

"When did you last see the stamp?"

"About two months ago."

"Why did you check it then?"

Lydia glanced at her attorney.

He nodded.

"Martin asked about it."

Everyone in the room became still.

Ruiz leaned forward.

"What exactly did he ask?"

"He asked whether I still had Richard's old signing stamp."

"When?"

"Nine weeks ago."

"Why?"

"He said he was trying to authenticate historical documents."

"Did you show it to him?"

Lydia hesitated.

Price closed his eyes briefly.

Ruiz waited.

"Mrs. Hale?"

"Yes."

"Did he touch it?"

"Yes."

"Did he take it?"

"No."

"Did you watch him the entire time?"

"No."

"How long was he alone with it?"

"Maybe five minutes."

Ruiz wrote.

"Did you notice it missing afterward?"

"No."

"When did you notice?"

"Today."

"After Elena confronted you about a document supposedly signed by your dead husband."

"Yes."

Ruiz sat back.

"Convenient."

Price intervened.

"My client understands how this appears."

"Does she?"

Lydia's composure cracked.

"I thought Martin was helping me prove what happened to Richard."

Ruiz pointed toward me.

"So you attempted to obtain control of Elena's assets."

"No."

I couldn't remain silent.

"You brought a notary to my honeymoon suite."

Price turned toward Lydia.

She looked away.

Ruiz's eyebrows lifted.

"I hadn't heard that part."

Nora slid the documents toward her.

"You have now."

Price whispered, "Lydia, what did you do?"

For the first time all day, someone from Lydia's side sounded genuinely horrified.

She looked at him.

"I was trying to protect Ethan."

"By having Elena transfer her assets?"

"Martin said once they were married, everything needed to be consolidated before Marcus could lock Ethan out."

Ruiz asked, "Why would Martin care?"

"Because he said Richard's family had a rightful claim."

"Did he mention the insurance policy?"

Lydia looked confused.

"What insurance policy?"

Her reaction appeared genuine.

Nora explained.

Lydia stared at her.

"Five million?"

"Yes."

"No."

"Martin never mentioned it?"

"No."

Ruiz looked at Price.

"Your client may have been useful to him."

Lydia flinched.

That word struck her harder than accusation.

Useful.

Because Lydia Hale built her identity around being the person who controlled rooms.

The possibility that Martin had manipulated her was almost unbearable.

Ruiz continued.

"What about Victor Dane?"

Lydia looked at the photograph from the safe-deposit box.

"Martin introduced us."

"Why?"

"He said Victor represented investors willing to finance a legal challenge."

"Did Victor know you planned to have Elena sign transfer documents?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Nora leaned forward.

"How?"

"I told him."

"When?"

"At that café."

Seventeen days before the wedding.

"Did he help prepare them?"

"No."

"Who did?"

"Martin drafted the first version."

There it was.

Lydia had claimed earlier that "our attorney" prepared the documents.

Now we knew which attorney.

"Did Ethan know Martin drafted them?"

Lydia looked at her son.

"No."

Ethan's eyes closed.

One lie he had told me had apparently protected someone who had also been lying to him.

Ruiz asked, "What did Victor want?"

"Nothing from me."

"Nobody attends a meeting like that for nothing."

Lydia looked toward the floor.

"He wanted North Harbor."

"How?"

"Martin said if we established the Hale interest in Mercer Atlantic, we could settle the land dispute by selling the parcel to Harbor Crown."

"For how much?"

"Eight million."

Marcus laughed in disbelief.

"Land potentially worth twenty-five."

Lydia stared at him.

"Martin said twelve."

"Of course he did."

Ruiz asked the next question.

"How much would you receive?"

"Three million."

"And Martin?"

"Two."

"Victor?"

"He didn't say."

"So your son would gain control of Elena's company, you would receive three million from selling disputed land, Martin would receive two million, and Harbor Crown would acquire land potentially worth far more."

Lydia looked sick.

When Ruiz stated it plainly, there was nowhere for the story about protecting Richard's legacy to hide.

"I thought the land belonged partly to Richard."

"But you were willing to sell it immediately."

Lydia didn't answer.

That silence mattered.

Grievance had been the justification.

Money had become the destination.

Ruiz's phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression had changed.

"We found the signature stamp."

Lydia stood.

"Where?"

"Not at your house."

"Then where?"

Ruiz looked at Nora.

"Martin Shaw's office."

Lydia sank back into her chair.

Ruiz continued.

"We also found blank corporate certificates, several versions of Samuel Mercer's signature, and a printer containing drafts matching the fraudulent North Harbor exhibits."

Nora exhaled.

"Enough for a warrant?"

"More than enough."

"Where is Martin?"

Ruiz's expression hardened.

"Gone."

"Gone where?"

"His house is empty. Phone off. Vehicle missing."

Ethan looked toward his mother.

She appeared frightened again.

Ruiz wasn't finished.

"We found something else in his office."

She placed a clear evidence sleeve on the table.

Inside was a photocopy of a check.

The check was for $250,000.

Paid to Martin Shaw.

Dated six weeks ago.

The payer wasn't Lydia.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Harbor Crown.

The name printed on the account belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had access to Hale Meridian's succession information.

Someone who knew Marcus was the alternate trustee.

Someone who knew the legacy authorization code.

I stared at the signature.

Nora whispered, "No."

Ethan looked between us.

"Who is it?"

I couldn't answer immediately.

The check had been issued by Margaret Lin.

Chair of Hale Meridian's board.

The woman who had advised me less than three hours earlier to activate my grandfather's contingency plan.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Board Chair’s Secret Payment to Martin Exposed a Second Plan for Hale Meridian, and My Grandfather’s Safeguard Became Their Intended Weapon

Nora reached the window first. "Plate?" I had caught only the last few digits. "Seven-three-eight.
