If Ethan knowingly participated before marrying you, you have another."

I knew.

I just didn't want Nora to say it.

"Fraud?"

"Potentially."

The word landed softly.

Still, it seemed to alter the air in the room.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Below us, cars moved through the city. Pedestrians crossed intersections. Somewhere a delivery truck reversed with a distant electronic beep.

Normal life.

Twenty-four hours earlier, I had been Elena Mercer preparing to marry Ethan Hale.

Now I was trying to determine whether my husband had entered our marriage expecting to gain control of my property.

"There's one more thing," Nora said.

I turned.

She held her phone.

"His email."

My stomach tightened.

"What email?"

"We don't have the full chain yet."

"Then what do you have?"

"A forwarded message from Lydia's assistant."

She handed me the phone.

The message was brief.

Sent late last night.

From Ethan.

To his mother.

I read the sentence once.

Then again.

The words were ordinary.

That made them worse.

Once she signs, it's done.

I gave the phone back.

Nora didn't ask whether I was all right.

That was one reason I trusted her.

She waited.

After several seconds, I said, "Can we authenticate it?"

"We're working on that."

"Do it."

"And until then?"

I looked toward the bedroom door.

My husband was on the other side.

Twelve hours into our marriage.

"Don't tell them we have it."

Nora studied me.

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

"What are you thinking?"

I picked up my wedding dress and moved it away from the door.

Then I opened my suitcase.

"I'm thinking Ethan still believes the worst thing I discovered this morning is that his mother is greedy."

I folded a blouse and placed it inside.

"I want to know what else he believes I don't know."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Let My Husband Believe He Still Had a Marriage to Save While My Attorney Followed the Trail He Thought Was Hidden

"Eight days?" Ethan said it quietly.
