everything.

Daniel advised us to make copies and secure the original.

Eleanor refused to let the document leave her house until proper legal protection was arranged.

I understood.

For once, nobody was going to gamble with the one piece of evidence that could end the dispute.

We returned home separately.

I drove Lily to school.

I went to work.

I answered emails.

I pretended life remained ordinary.

It didn't.

Every unfamiliar car made me glance at the street.

Every unknown number made my phone feel heavier.

At noon, Daniel called.

“The developer's attorney has requested an emergency hearing.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“That fast?”

“They claim immediate financial harm.”

I laughed bitterly.

“They've been preparing this for months.”

“I know.”

“Can they win?”

“Not if the original trust is valid.”

“What if they say it isn't?”

“Then we prove the chain of custody.”

That afternoon, I received an email.

No subject.

One attachment.

A photograph of Lily leaving school.

My hands went cold.

There was no message.

I called Daniel immediately.

“Don't respond,” he said.

“I won't.”

“Contact the police.”

I did.

Then I called the school and arranged for Lily to stay inside until I arrived.

When I reached her, she ran toward me.

“Dad, what's wrong?”

“Nothing.”

She looked at my face.

“You're doing that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“Pretending.”

I knelt.

“I just want to be careful.”

She nodded.

We went home together.

Mom arrived an hour later.

She had tears in her eyes.

“I heard.”

I showed her the photograph.

She sat down.

“I never should have let Raymond near us.”

“This isn't your fault alone.”

She looked at me.

“I helped create it.”

I didn't argue.

She deserved honesty.

So did I.

“I need you to tell me everything.”

She did.

After Dad died, Raymond had visited several times.

He offered to help settle the estate.

He knew where the documents were.

He knew Mom was overwhelmed.

He convinced her that the land was becoming a liability.

He showed her projections suggesting the property would lose value.

Then he introduced her to the estate attorney.

“They said selling was the practical choice,” she said.

“Did Dad's original trust ever disappear?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you know Eleanor was a trustee?”

“No.”

She covered her face.

“I trusted the wrong people.”

I sat across from her.

“So did I.”

The difference was that I had trusted my family to tell me when they needed help.

Instead, they had learned to hide the size of the problem until I couldn't say no.

That evening, Rachel came by.

She brought a folder.

“I found these.”

Inside were emails between her and Raymond.

The first was from two years ago.

The last was three months ago.

The messages showed Raymond slowly convincing her that selling the land would solve everything.

But one email stood out.

Raymond had written:

*Once the original trust is gone, Evan cannot stop the transfer.**

I read it twice.

“What did he mean by gone?”

Rachel shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Marcus looked over my shoulder.

“He planned to destroy it.”

A chill went through me.

“But Eleanor still has it.”

“Yes.”

Rachel looked frightened.

“Then why hasn't he tried to take it?”

We called Eleanor.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Daniel called.

Still nothing.

I drove to her house.

Marcus followed.

Rachel came too.

The porch light was on.

The front door was unlocked.

I knocked.

“Eleanor?”

No answer.

We entered.

The house was empty.

A cup of tea sat on the kitchen table.

Still warm.

Her purse was gone.

Her coat wasn't.

I searched the living room.

Nothing.

Then I saw the wooden box.

It was still there.

Empty.

The trust document was gone.

Rachel gasped.

Marcus ran outside.

I followed.

There were tire tracks in the wet driveway.

Fresh.

At the edge of the road, a black sedan accelerated away.

We couldn't see the plate.

I called Daniel.

His response was immediate.

“Leave the house.”

“Eleanor is missing.”

“Leave.”

“We can't.”

“You don't know whether the person who took her is still nearby.”

We returned home.

Police arrived shortly afterward.

They searched the house.

There were no signs of forced entry.

That made it worse.

Whoever came inside had been let in.

Or had a key.

I remembered the old brass key from Dad's storage unit.

I had left it in my desk drawer.

When I got home, I checked.

It was gone.

Marcus stared at me.

“Someone took it.”

I nodded.

“Who knew about it?”

Mom.

Rachel.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Eleanor.

And Raymond.

The police asked for a list of everyone.

I gave them the names.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

“Eleanor is alive.”

My heart stopped.

“Who are you?”

“You have something I need.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Prove it.”

A photograph arrived.

Eleanor was sitting in a chair.

Her hands were free.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

I breathed again.

“What do you want?”

“The original trust.”

“No.”

A pause.

“You have until morning.”

“What happens then?”

“You lose more than the property.”

The line went dead.

I looked at Daniel.

He had heard everything.

“Don't give them anything,” he said.

“Then how do we get her back?”

“We find her.”

Marcus looked toward the window.

“I know where Raymond would take her.”

I turned.

“Where?”

He swallowed.

“The old warehouse where the company kept equipment.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. We do this properly.”

But Marcus was already reaching for his keys.

“I know that place.”

I stopped him.

“You're not going alone.”

He looked at me.

“You're still trying to save me.”

“No.”

I picked up my coat.

“I'm trying to bring Eleanor home.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: We Found Eleanor Where
