But he sometimes mistook silence for protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>It explained more than I wanted it to.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor showed us another document.<\/p>\n<p>A letter from Dad.<\/p>\n<p>It explained that the original trust could not be amended without written consent from all three trustees.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>And an independent trustee named Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a trustee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly if your father died before the trust matured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t anyone tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the false documents removed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey forged the trustee structure too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd whoever did it knew exactly where to look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave us a second envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a list of meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond had met with the retired estate attorney repeatedly after Dad&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>Then with the developer.<\/p>\n<p>Then with Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline was clear.<\/p>\n<p>But one name appeared more often than the others.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She had been helping us from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is your name here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came to see me once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were younger.
