Just call me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I deleted it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I opened my bank records again.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I didn&#39;t look at the total.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the dates.<\/p>\n<p>The money I had sent Marcus had not gone only toward rent.<\/p>\n<p>There were restaurant charges.<\/p>\n<p>Electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Weekend hotel stays.<\/p>\n<p>A payment to a company I didn&#39;t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something cold settle in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I called the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The representative confirmed that several transfers had been made through an account I had authorized years earlier for household emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten about it.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>There were recurring withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>Not huge.<\/p>\n<p>$120 here.<\/p>\n<p>$260 there.<\/p>\n<p>$490.<\/p>\n<p>$800.<\/p>\n<p>Small enough to disappear among ordinary expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Large enough to become thousands over time.<\/p>\n<p>I asked for copies of the transactions.<\/p>\n<p>When Lily was discharged that afternoon, I drove home with a folder on the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>She slept in the back.<\/p>\n<p>At home, I waited until she was settled before calling Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the emergency account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account I set up after Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh. That.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy have there been withdrawals every month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bills?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom&#39;s pension covers her bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain the $780 payment to Harbor View Hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was for work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t worked there in eight months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence became absolute.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my pulse in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my emergency account for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began talking quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The car.<\/p>\n<p>The rent.<\/p>\n<p>A loan.<\/p>\n<p>A friend.<\/p>\n<p>One explanation turned into another.<\/p>\n<p>None lasted.<\/p>\n<p>When he finally stopped, I asked the question I had been avoiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do you owe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty-seven thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back in my chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows I&#39;m having trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer landed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Lily&#39;s bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter had spent the morning exhausted after an emergency while my family had been arguing over money that was supposed to protect her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Mom came over again.<\/p>\n<p>She brought a casserole.<\/p>\n<p>She placed it on the counter without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t offer coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour brother made mistakes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s one way to describe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the folder and spread the statements across the table.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at them.<\/p>\n<p>Her face slowly drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know about all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if Marcus failed, we&#39;d lose everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were afraid of losing everything, so you kept letting me lose mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you could afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hurt more than anything Marcus had said.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it was cruel.<\/p>\n<p>Because it was honest.<\/p>\n<p>They had looked at my stable job, my house, my careful spending, and decided that meant I had more to give.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had looked at what it took to keep everything stable.<\/p>\n<p>I slid the papers toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot even for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have your pension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if something happens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;ll talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cYou&#39;re really going to let your brother lose his apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t make him lose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I finally did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked to the door.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, she turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father would hate seeing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad spent his whole life making sure we could stand on our own.
