Her handwriting covered the front page in blue marker.<\/p>\n<p>Dad, remember Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Her appointment was Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>I had already rearranged my work schedule, arranged transportation, and transferred money into the medical account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus,\u201d I said carefully, \u201cI can\u2019t do it this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>The rain seemed louder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always say that for about five minutes,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always say you can\u2019t. Then you send it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no anger in his voice.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow hurt more.<\/p>\n<p>For twelve years, I had been the person my family called when something went wrong. A broken water heater. A late mortgage payment. Mom\u2019s dental work. Marcus\u2019s car transmission. My sister Rachel\u2019s tuition. Your brother says you&#39;re refusing to help him.
