progress.

Savings target: ahead.

Employment: stable.

Certification course: ongoing.

Debt plan: current.

Projected transition: possibly earlier than eighteen months.

I felt a strange pang.

“You might leave early?”

Monica looked at me.

“That is the idea.”

“I know.”

“You sound disappointed.”

“I’m allowed to like having you here.”

She smiled.

“You're also allowed to let us leave.”

“I know.”

Laya appeared from the hallway.

“Leave where?”

Monica glanced at me.

“Eventually we'll get our own permanent place.”

Laya frowned.

“This is our own place.”

“For now.”

She pointed toward the refrigerator.

The paper sign was still there.

OUR HOUSE FOR NOW.

“I know.”

Laya considered that.

Then shrugged.

“Can my next room be purple?”

Monica laughed.

“We'll negotiate.”

That was resilience in its purest form.

Not pretending permanence.

Trusting transition.

On my drive home, Mom called.

“Your father told me he finally told you everything.”

“I think so.”

“I knew about Christmas.”

“I know.”

“I mean Eric’s suggestion.”

I tightened my grip on the wheel.

“You knew he suggested excluding me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I agreed.”

The answer hurt.

Mom continued before I could speak.

“I told myself your father needed it.”

“Needed what?”

“A holiday where he didn't feel embarrassed.”

“So my feelings were the acceptable cost.”

“Yes.”

She started crying.

I let her.

I did not rescue her from the truth.

After a moment she said, “I am deeply sorry.”

“I believe you.”

“I don't expect that to fix it.”

“Good.”

“I want you to know something else.”

“What?”

“When your father said Christmas was easier without you, I knew exactly why.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“And you still let him say it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was tired of being between everyone.”

“You weren't between us. You were participating.”

“I know.”

That was the difference.

Mom had spent years describing herself as mediator.

But mediators do not secretly choose sides while claiming neutrality.

Sometimes peacekeeping is simply conflict avoidance with better branding.

“I’m trying to stop doing that,” she said.

“I can tell.”

“Will you come next Christmas?”

The question arrived too early.

Months too early.

“I don't know.”

She inhaled.

Then, quietly, “Okay.”

No guilt.

No persuasion.

No speech about family.

Just okay.

I ended the call feeling sad and strangely lighter.

A week later, Eric entered a formal plea denying criminal wrongdoing.

The case would continue.

His attorney signaled that they intended to challenge whether the authorization could reasonably have deceived sophisticated lenders given its obvious deficiencies.

My attorney explained the argument.

I listened.

Then I asked the only question that mattered to me.

“Do I need to do anything today?”

“No.”

So I didn't.

That evening, Leah came over with pizza.

Dad called while we were eating.

Mom sent a photograph of the condo courtyard.

Monica texted that Laya had received an A on her spelling test.

Ordinary life crowded around the legal problem.

I welcomed it.

Then Leah asked, “Do you think we'll ever have a normal Christmas again?”

I took a bite of pizza.

“What is normal?”

“One where nobody secretly plans to borrow a hundred thousand dollars against a house that isn't theirs.”

“That seems like a reasonable minimum.”

She laughed.

Then she became serious.

“Would you go?”

“To Christmas?”

“Yes.”

“I don't know.”

“Mom asked me too.”

“What did you say?”

“I don't know.”

We looked at each other.

For once, neither daughter had supplied the answer our parents wanted.

And nothing terrible happened.

Outside, winter was beginning to loosen.

Water ran along the curb where snow had melted.

The season that had started with an empty place at a Christmas table was changing.

So were we.

But the central question was no longer whether my parents deserved the bungalow.

They were never going to receive it.

That decision was settled.

The harder question was whether we could become a family that remained connected when money, rescue, guilt, and automatic forgiveness were removed.

For the first time, none of us knew the answer.

And for the first time, we were allowing that uncertainty to remain instead of forcing someone—usually me—to fix it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Spring Brought Distance From the Christmas Betrayal, but Eric’s Defense Tried to Turn My Family’s Worst Habit Into His Best Excuse

The formal notice did not bring satisfaction.
