The deed remained in my name. My attorney had prepared a possible transfer structure, but nothing had been executed. I can review it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After we hung up, I drove to the bungalow.<\/p>\n<p>Snow from the previous night had crusted along the driveway. The house stood quiet beneath bare maple branches, its pale siding almost blue in the winter light.<\/p>\n<p>I unlocked the door.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s curtain samples were leaning against the kitchen wall.<\/p>\n<p>I had given her permission to bring them over after our visit.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s measurements were written on a piece of scrap paper near the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>I had laughed when I first saw them.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wondered why he had bothered measuring a room in a property he did not yet own.<\/p>\n<p>I walked into the second bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>There were flattened cardboard boxes against one wall.<\/p>\n<p>They were not mine.<\/p>\n<p>I crouched beside them.<\/p>\n<p>Written across one in Dad\u2019s block handwriting were the words BOOKS \u2014 OFFICE.<\/p>\n<p>Another said KITCHEN.<\/p>\n<p>A third had MOM CLOTHES.<\/p>\n<p>They had already started packing.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give Dad permission to call my attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know he called?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcited people ask when they can move in. They don\u2019t ask attorneys about changing documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>I hated how efficiently her tears reached the part of me trained to surrender.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I need answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you wanted to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you doing this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreatening our home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the empty bungalow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still live in your own house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were going to sell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started discussing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA realtor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou listed your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoney\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not sell anything based on property you do not own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her crying stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The silence afterward was different.<\/p>\n<p>Harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that house was for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I planned for it to be. How long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother mentioned it weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Thanksgiving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks before I planned to reveal it.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks during which they had smiled at me, asked questions, made suggestions and apparently arranged their future while pretending not to know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did nobody tell me you knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn&#39;t want to ruin your surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was almost believable.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you call my attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s breathing grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what your problem is? Everything has to be on your terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the bungalow I had purchased with money I earned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cMy property does remain on my terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed there until my hands stopped shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Around noon I drove home and found Monica carrying boxes down the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Laya followed with a backpack almost as large as she was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving day?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporary move,\u201d Monica said.<\/p>\n<p>She tried to smile.<\/p>\n<p>Their arrangement had changed again. The friend who had offered them a room could only keep them for a few weeks. Monica was searching for housing while trying to keep Laya in the same school district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate bouncing her around,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Laya was kneeling beside one of the boxes, drawing a smiley face on the cardboard with a blue marker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom says houses aren&#39;t the important part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monica gave her a tired look. \u201cI said being together is more important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laya looked at me. \u201cDid you eat the rest of the cake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monica started protesting.<\/p>\n<p>I invited them inside.<\/p>\n<p>The three of us finished the cake standing around my kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>Laya got chocolate icing on her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Monica apologized.<\/p>\n<p>I told her it was washable.<\/p>\n<p>Such a small thing, that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it became important later because nobody asked me for anything.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody hinted.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody calculated what I had.<\/p>\n<p>When Monica talked about housing, she talked about applications, waiting lists, work schedules, deposits.
