weapon slid away.<\/p>\n<p>Officers swarmed him.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Finished.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics reached Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the floor holding Laura\u2019s tape.<\/p>\n<p>Mason crouched beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded even though I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Mark was lifted onto a stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>As they carried him out, he looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>He struggled to speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know Henry chose you until after I loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make what you did disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurvive first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>They took him away.<\/p>\n<p>Mason looked at the tape in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to preserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed it over.<\/p>\n<p>Then an officer approached carrying a tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s transmitted archive had already reached federal authorities.<\/p>\n<p>One file was flagged immediately.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned agreement dated 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Shaw\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Meridian Children\u2019s Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>And a fourth signature.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason looked toward the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was waiting above.<\/p>\n<p>The signature looked genuine.<\/p>\n<p>Not copied.<\/p>\n<p>Not traced.<\/p>\n<p>Genuine.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath it, in Dad\u2019s handwriting, were four words.<\/p>\n<p>I ACCEPT THE ARRANGEMENT DESCRIBED.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
