started running.

“Henry!”

Rebecca went after him.

I followed before anyone could stop me.

We rounded the building.

An old wooden door stood partly open beneath ivy.

Henry disappeared inside.

Rebecca followed.

I reached the doorway seconds later.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

I heard Rebecca shout.

Then Henry.

Then another voice.

Arthur.

I went down.

The tunnel smelled of wet stone and rust.

At the bottom, I found Henry facing his father.

Arthur stood alone.

No Victor.

No cane.

The frailty had been partly performance.

He held a pistol.

Rebecca stood between them.

Arthur looked at me.

“Sophie.”

Henry said, “Put it down.”

Arthur smiled.

“You always were emotional.”

“You used Victor’s father’s body.”

“Yes.”

“You let Robert mourn you.”

“Yes.”

“You let me spend decades looking for answers.”

“That was your choice.”

Henry’s hands curled into fists.

Rebecca whispered, “Grandfather?”

Arthur looked at her.

“You’re Laura’s girl.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry about your mother.”

“You knew Victor killed her.”

“I suspected.”

“You did nothing.”

“I was already dead.”

Rebecca laughed once.

It sounded like a sob.

Arthur raised the gun slightly.

“Move aside.”

Henry stepped in front of Rebecca.

“No.”

Arthur looked almost disappointed.

“You finally found something you’re willing to die for.”

“My daughter.”

Rebecca’s face changed.

Henry did not look back.

Arthur said, “You gave her away.”

“To keep her alive.”

“You abandoned her.”

Henry flinched.

Arthur knew exactly where to cut.

I said, “Where is Victor?”

Arthur glanced toward me.

“Taking Mark and Diane to the only place the trust can actually be opened.”

“Where?”

“You already know.”

My condo?

St. Aldwyn?

The warehouse?

Then I understood.

“Locker 417.”

Arthur smiled.

“Not the locker.”

Mom’s earlier words came back.

Harlow South used basement rooms for company archives.

417 was only one room.

“What is beneath it?”

Arthur’s smile widened.

“Richard’s original vault.”

My condo building had not merely contained evidence.

It had been built around it.

Arthur raised his gun toward Henry.

Rebecca stepped in front of her father.

“No.”

Arthur hesitated.

That was enough.

Henry lunged.

The gun fired.

Rebecca screamed.

Arthur hit the wall.

Henry fell.

I dropped beside him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Rebecca pressed both hands against the wound.

“Dad.”

Henry looked at her.

For the first time since meeting him, he seemed to have no strategy.

No leverage.

No hidden file.

Just fear.

“Don’t call me that unless you mean it.”

Rebecca was crying.

“I don’t know what I mean.”

Henry gave a weak smile.

“Fair.”

Mason and two officers burst into the tunnel.

Arthur was disarmed.

Paramedics were called.

Before they carried Henry out, he grabbed my wrist.

“Victor knows the vault requires three things.”

“What?”

“Both beneficiaries.”

“Mark and me.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Henry struggled to breathe.

“Richard’s original seal.”

“Where is it?”

He looked toward Arthur.

“Ask the dead man.”

Arthur smiled from the floor.

“I don’t have it.”

Henry closed his eyes.

“No.”

“Then who does?”

Arthur looked at me.

“Your mother.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Mom Opened the Necklace She Had Worn for Twenty-Seven Years, and
