of my wedding dress.

Mom found jeans and a sweater in my condo.

I showered for twenty minutes and still felt as though the night remained on my skin.

The apartment looked exactly as I had left it before becoming Mrs. Ellison.

Flowers on the kitchen counter.

Two packed honeymoon suitcases beside the bedroom door.

Mark’s jacket hanging over a chair.

I stared at it until Dad quietly moved it into the closet.

“You don’t have to decide everything today,” he said.

“I already decided one three folders spread around her.

She had not slept.

Neither had I.

Rebecca waited downstairs with Mason.

Diane had gone to the hospital to remain near Mark, who needed stitches and observation after Victor’s attack.

I asked Mom, “Do you believe Henry has Laura’s tape?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe Laura suspected you?”

Mom looked down.

“I believe Laura may have suspected everyone.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

She sighed.

“If Victor deliberately routed stolen money through companies using my surname, then Laura could easily have concluded I was involved.”

“Did she ever confront you?”

“No.”

“Did you know she existed?”

“Yes.”

I stopped.

Mom looked at me.

“I knew Diane had a younger sister.”

“Did you know Laura was involved with Uncle Henry?”

“No.”

Dad entered from the hall.

“I didn’t know either until Henry told me she was pregnant.”

Mom looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Henry disappeared the next day.”

“Robert, that is exactly the kind of information you tell your wife.”

“I know.”

The quiet anger between them frightened me almost as much as the larger investigation.

For years, I had viewed my parents as the stable center of everything.

Now I could see how much of their marriage had been built around mutual decisions not to disturb old pain.

Mason called from downstairs.

We had to leave.

Police had secured the outer grounds of St. Aldwyn but had not entered the main building.

Thermal scans suggested at least three me.

She held the photograph of Laura and Henry the entire way.

Neither of us spoke much.

Finally she asked, “Do you think he loved her?”

“Henry?”

“Yes.”

“I think he believes he did.”

“That sounds different.”

“It is.”

She looked at the photograph.

“My adoptive parents were good to me.”

“That matters.”

“They’re both dead.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I always wondered why they never told me more.”

“Maybe they were protecting you.”

“From Henry?”

“Or from whatever Henry was protecting you from.”

Rebecca turned toward the window.

“I spent five years working for Mark.”

That caught me.

“Five?”

“Yes.”

“He hired you before we met.”

“About a year before.”

I felt the implication.

“Did Henry arrange that too?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Mark know who you were?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t think so.”

“He knew your surname.”

“Shaw is common.”

“Not in this family.”

She closed her eyes.

“He once told me Victor joked that I looked familiar.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you ever meet Victor?”

“Twice.”

“How did he act?”

“He stared.”

The road narrowed as we approached the school.

St. Aldwyn sat behind stone walls and old iron gates.

The sign had been removed years ago, but the outline remained.

Beyond it stood three connected brick buildings with steep roofs and rows of narrow windows.

It looked less like a school than a place built to keep people from seeing in.

Police vehicles filled the drive.

Mason met us beside a mobile command van.

“You stay here.”

Rebecca immediately refused.

He expected that.

“We found Judge Crawford’s car.”

“Where?”

“Behind the chapel.”

“Is she inside?”

“We don’t know.”

A tactical officer approached.

One door to the main building had been left open.

Not forced.

Left open.

Mason’s expression said he hated that.

“Invitation,” Dad muttered.

Exactly.

I asked whether they had found cameras.

“Several.”

“Working?”

“Yes.”

“So Henry can see us.”

“Possibly.”

Mom crossed her arms.

“Then pretending we aren’t here accomplishes nothing.”

Mason gave her a tired look.

“I’m not sending civilians into an unsecured building.”

Nobody argued after that.

We waited.

Minutes became unbearable.

Then radio chatter sharpened.

Officers found blood.

Not much.

A trail.

Leading toward the infirmary.

Rebecca started toward the building.

I grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

“That could be my father.”

“It could be the judge.”

“Or Victor.”

“Exactly.”

She stopped.

Twelve minutes later, officers brought Judge Crawford outside.

Alive.

Bound wrists.

Bruised face.

Seventy years old and furious.

She refused the ambulance until she saw Rebecca.

Her expression collapsed.

“Oh, Laura.”

Rebecca froze.

“I’m not Laura.”

Judge Crawford blinked.

“No.”

She touched Rebecca’s cheek.

“Of course not.”

Mason asked, “Judge, who did this?”

“Victor.”

“Henry?”

“He was here.”

“Where is he now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he help Victor?”

Judge Crawford’s face tightened.

“No.”

That surprised everyone.

She sat on the back step of the ambulance.

“Henry brought me here voluntarily.”

“You came willingly?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To open the archive.”

Rebecca stepped closer.

“What archive?”

Judge Crawford looked at her.

“The original guardianship records.”

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Why are they here?”

“Because St. Aldwyn maintained duplicates.”

Mason asked, “Did Henry find them?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca swallowed.

“What did they say?”

The judge closed her eyes.

“Your biological mother was Laura Shaw.”

“And father?”

“Henry Bennett.”

Rebecca began crying.

At least one question was answered.

Judge Crawford continued.

“Richard Ellison did not order your death.”

Mom exhaled.

“Henry lied.”

“No.”

The judge corrected her.

“Henry believed Richard did.”

“What actually happened?” Rebecca asked.

Judge Crawford said Laura had brought evidence to Richard.

Not evidence against Helen.

Not exactly.

Evidence that Victor had been using several shell companies to steal from Harlow South.

One shell had been built around Mom’s identity.

Another around Henry’s.

Another around Thomas Ellison.

Victor created trails pointing in multiple directions so nobody could prove which theft belonged to whom.

“Then why did Laura die?”

Judge Crawford looked toward the school.

“Because she found the master account.”

Mason crouched.

“What account?”

“The destination where the money was consolidated before it moved offshore.”

“Whose name?”

“It wasn’t a person.”

“A company?”

“Yes.”

“What company?”

“Meridian Children’s Foundation.”

Mom frowned.

“I remember that.”

“What was it?”

“A charity Richard supported.”

Judge Crawford nodded.

“Victor controlled it secretly.”

Diane was not with us, but I imagined what that revelation would do to her.

Victor had used a children’s charity to launder stolen money.

Rebecca whispered, “My mother found out.”

“Yes.”

“She was going to report him.”

“Yes.”

“And he killed her.”

The judge looked at Mason.

“I cannot prove that.”

“But you believe it.”

“Yes.”

“Why was Rebecca registered as Ellison?”

Judge Crawford took a breath.

“Because Richard protected her.”

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

“After Laura told him what she found, Richard believed the baby was in danger. He used his own surname to disguise the guardianship and placed her here.”

“So Richard saved me.”

“Yes.”

Henry had spent decades believing the opposite.

A lie born from incomplete information had governed almost every choice he made after Laura’s death.

I thought of Mark.

How many lies had become justification because someone wanted them to be true?

Judge Crawford looked at me.

“You’re Sophie.”

“Yes.”

“You look like Helen.”

People always said that.

“Why did you write that I would learn why I was chosen?”

She closed her eyes.

“Because Sophie was always supposed to be the second beneficiary.”

Mom frowned.

“Richard added her because he thought she might be his child.”

“No.”

Mom stared.

“What?”

Judge Crawford shook her head.

“He already knew she was not.”

“But the letter said he arranged testing later.”

“He did. To document it formally.”

“Then why put her in the trust?”

The judge looked toward Dad.

“Because of Henry.”

Dad’s face changed.

“What did my brother have to do with Sophie?”

“Richard believed Henry would come after Helen.”

Mom whispered, “Why?”

“Because Laura died believing Helen might be involved.”

“So Richard protected my daughter financially?”

“Not just financially.”

Judge Crawford reached into the coat an officer had returned to her.

She removed a folded paper.

“Richard created contingency instructions.”

Mom took it.

Her hands began shaking as she read.

If Henry resurfaced.

If Victor threatened Helen.

If Laura’s child was found.

Sophie was to be moved temporarily if necessary.

St. Aldwyn was one option.

I stared at Mom.

“You really were supposed to hide me here.”

“Only if there was immediate danger.”

Judge Crawford nodded.

“Richard believed Sophie could be used to force Helen to surrender records.”

My stomach tightened.

“Used how?”

“Kidnapping.”

Dad closed his eyes.

The photograph from middle school suddenly made more sense.

Henry had watched me because he thought I was part of the conspiracy that killed Laura.

I was not the original target.

Rebecca was.

But once Rebecca disappeared into adoption, Sophie became the accessible child linked to Helen.

Judge Crawford continued.

“Richard specifically warned Robert never to let Henry near Sophie.”

Dad whispered, “I never saw that letter.”

“Because Richard died before it reached you.”

“Then how did Henry know about the contingency?”

The judge looked ashamed.

“My father told him.”

Her father had been Richard’s attorney.

After Richard died, Henry approached him.

He claimed Helen and Victor had murdered Laura.

The attorney, already terrified, gave Henry pieces of information he should never have revealed.

Including Sophie’s role in Richard’s contingency plan.

Mom sank onto the ambulance step.

“So Henry believed Sophie was protected because she was valuable to us.”

“Yes.”

“And he watched her.”

“Yes.”

“Why not take her?”

Judge Crawford looked toward me.

“Because Robert changed the school pickup authorization.”

The story from 2003.

Henry had tested whether he could reach me.

Dad prevented it without understanding the larger plan.

I looked at him.

“You saved me.”

He shook his head.

“I did what any father should.”

Mason asked about the blue ledger.

Judge Crawford knew it.

“It is not Richard’s original.”

Mom closed her eyes in relief.

“Who created it?”

“Laura.”

That startled us.

Rebecca whispered, “My mother?”

“Yes.”

Laura copied transactions while investigating the theft.

She labeled accounts according to the names attached to the shell companies.

“H.B. meant entities pretending to belong to Helen,” the judge explained. “It did not mean Helen received the money.”

Henry had misunderstood his own lover’s evidence.

Or had eventually chosen the interpretation that matched his anger.

“Where is Laura’s tape?” Rebecca asked.

Judge Crawford looked back toward the school.

“Henry had it.”

“Did you watch it?”

“Yes.”

“Who does she name?”

“Victor.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Nobody spoke.

Judge Crawford continued.

“Laura says she initially suspected Helen, then discovered Helen’s identity was being used.”

Mom cried quietly.

After an entire night of accusation, Laura’s own voice apparently cleared her.

Rebecca asked, “Where is the tape now?”

“Victor took it.”

Mason cursed.

“Why?”

“Because it can establish motive.”

“And Henry?”

“I don’t know.”

Officers began clearing deeper sections of the building.

The old infirmary contained hidden compartments.

Files.

Cash.

Fake passports.

Photographs.

Henry had maintained aliases for decades.

Then one officer called Mason urgently.

A room behind the infirmary had been locked from the outside.

Inside they found a bed.

Medical equipment.

Food.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Not Rebecca.

Me.

From childhood through adulthood.

School.

College.

First job.

My condo.

Then Mark.

I felt physically ill.

“He was following me this whole time.”

Judge Crawford shook her head.

“Not Henry.”

“What?”

She pointed to one photograph.

A date stamp.

It was taken while Henry had been hospitalized in Canada under an alias, according to
