I let myself believe taking something from you would somehow make that fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband didn\u2019t die in an accident, did he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you suspected it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s car had gone off a bridge twenty-seven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The official report said alcohol had been involved.<\/p>\n<p>Mom said Richard had stopped drinking years before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew him that well?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you love him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>Her hesitation answered before her words did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad remained strangely calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d Diane asked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I married Helen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you and Richard having an affair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were together before he married Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Mom explained that she and Richard had dated for two years and later remained business partners.<\/p>\n<p>Then she told us Richard had contacted her six months before his death because he believed Victor was stealing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Victor?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard found a suspicious payment bearing Victor\u2019s authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at Mason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mechanic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom seemed to lose its air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mechanic who worked on Richard\u2019s car three days before the crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called Victor.<\/p>\n<p>He answered after several rings.<\/p>\n<p>When she demanded to know whether he had killed Richard, he refused to give her a direct answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something stranger.<\/p>\n<p>He knew we had found the key.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor ignored the question.<\/p>\n<p>He warned us not to open Locker 417.<\/p>\n<p>Mason identified himself.<\/p>\n<p>Victor laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Then he addressed Mom by name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you open it,\u201d he said, \u201ceverything Richard tried to protect becomes public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t think so afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor coughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cAsk Helen who Sophie\u2019s father is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body went numb.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s voice continued through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat condo wasn\u2019t protected for Helen.
