The family would then assume you were working together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every forged paper had been designed around friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Loyalty itself would become evidence of conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get my identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour purse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took my Social Security card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI photographed your documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe card is still missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale was supposed to return it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris wrote quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho opened the bank account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Carol continued.<\/p>\n<p>Albright arranged for the account to be opened while a temporary employee was handling customers. At Walter\u2019s request, investigators allowed the scheme to continue through monitored accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The conspirators had seen balances.<\/p>\n<p>They had not obtained the money.<\/p>\n<p>Every screen.<\/p>\n<p>BANK.<\/p>\n<p>TRUST.<\/p>\n<p>INVOICES.<\/p>\n<p>CAROL.<\/p>\n<p>ALBRIGHT.<\/p>\n<p>Then one folder stopped us.<\/p>\n<p>DALE\u2014FINAL NIGHT.<\/p>\n<p>Carol made a small sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The first file was audio.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp showed 11:41 p.m. on the night before Grandpa died.<\/p>\n<p>Walter dollars suddenly seemed meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa might not have simply died in his sleep.<\/p>\n<p>He might have died because someone wanted him silent.<\/p>\n<p>A deputy\u2019s voice crackled over Harris\u2019s radio.<\/p>\n<p>June\u2019s Tacoma had been found abandoned near the Solomon River bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The driver\u2019s door was open.<\/p>\n<p>Keys remained inside.<\/p>\n<p>Dale was gone.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy had also found the envelope Dale stole from the machine shed.<\/p>\n<p>It had been torn open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a handwritten letter and a pharmacy receipt dated the night before Walter died.<\/p>\n<p>The medication had been collected in Grandpa\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Harris asked who signed for it.<\/p>\n<p>A pause followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale Parker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s knees buckled.<\/p>\n<p>Mark caught her.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy continued.<\/p>\n<p>Something had been written on the back of the receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Harris listened.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy read Grandpa\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>If Dale ran after the truth came out, police should search the old her head.<\/p>\n<p>Terror replaced everything else in her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fishing cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is the witness?\u201d Harris asked.<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie?\u201d June whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Carol nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was with Dad the night he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June looked toward the western sky.<\/p>\n<p>The sun was dropping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was supposed to be at summer camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019s radio crackled again.<\/p>\n<p>This time a child\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>Frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Breathless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June stepped toward the cruiser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man shouted in the
