The conversation had happened the night before the Christmas confrontation.

Jennifer's voice followed.

"And if she doesn't?"

"Then we make enough of a scene that she stays focused on us."

Rebecca asked whether the camera covered the side of the house.

Michael said it did not cover the upper study window properly because of the maple branches.

He had remembered the blind spot from childhood.

Lisa spoke.

"I still think breaking in is insane."

Michael answered, "We're not stealing anything."

Rebecca laughed softly.

"We're literally climbing through a window."

"We're retrieving Dad's property."

"My husband's letter," I whispered.

Thomas did not answer.

On the recording, Jennifer said, "We need the key and the letter before she talks to Brennan."

A chair moved.

Lisa asked, "Why does the letter matter so much?"

Michael told her it contained "old financial nonsense."

Then Jennifer said something that made Thomas stop writing.

"It matters because if Dad wrote down the loans, she'll know we've already taken more than she thinks."

More than I thought.

I looked toward Thomas.

He wrote those words on his legal pad.

The recording continued.

Evelyn's voice appeared next.

Calm.

Patient.

The same voice that had asked whether I wanted chamomile tea after my hospital stay.

"If Margaret agrees to tour Silver Pines, we won't need any of the other steps."

Michael replied immediately.

"She's not agreeing."

"You don't know that."

"She changed the gate code."

"That means she's angry, not irrational."

Jennifer interrupted.

"She changed everything after one argument."

"Because you gave her a reason to."

That surprised me.

Evelyn had defended me.

At least briefly.

Michael sounded irritated.

"We're not paying you to analyze us."

Silence.

Then Evelyn said, "You're paying me to help establish that she's becoming unable to manage independently."

Thomas leaned closer to the phone.

There it was.

Not concern.

A project.

A paid project.

Jennifer asked how long it would take.

Evelyn answered carefully.

"Usually you don't prove incapacity with one dramatic event. You build a pattern."

Keys misplaced.

Appointments changed.

Objects moved.

Medication errors.

Suspicion.

Isolation.

A pattern.

Manufactured one piece at a time.

Lisa sounded uneasy.

"She's still sharp."

"I know."

"Then this isn't going to work."

"It will if she behaves unpredictably in front of enough people."

Jennifer said, "That's why Christmas matters."

I stopped the recording.

My hands were trembling.

Thomas waited.

After a moment, I pressed play again.

Jennifer continued.

"If she's confused in front of everybody and gets angry when we suggest help, that gives us witnesses."

Evelyn said, "Confusion alone isn't enough."

"What if she tries to throw us out?"

"Then you describe it as paranoia."

Lisa whispered, "Jesus."

Michael replied, "Nobody's hurting her."

Then came the sentence that changed the shape of everything.

Jennifer said, "The first dose worked."

The room around me seemed to disappear.

Evelyn responded immediately.

"It caused a hospital visit."

"But she recovered."

"That's not the point."

"It showed us she can be made disoriented."

Michael said, "And it showed us nobody comes when she calls."

Nobody spoke for several seconds on the recording.

Nobody spoke in my house either.

I felt something colder than grief settle inside me.

The hospital had been a test.

Not only of the drug.

Of my isolation.

They had learned I could become frightened and impaired without any of my children showing up.

Then Jennifer said, "I didn't know she'd call an ambulance."

Evelyn's tone changed.

"You wrote the dosage."

"I copied what you told me."

"No."

"You told me how much."

"I told you what her medications could interact with. You decided the amount."

Jennifer's voice sharpened.

"Don't rewrite this now."

"I'm making it clear."

Michael intervened.

"Enough. Nobody's getting arrested. Tomorrow we get the papers, and Christmas Day we finish this."

Lisa asked, "Finish what?"

"The incapacity documentation."

"What happens after that?"

Jennifer answered.

"We take control."

Those three words landed harder than shouting would have.

We take control.

My health.

My house.

My accounts.

My choices.

My life.

Lisa asked, "And if she refuses the facility?"

Michael said, "She won't have the authority to refuse."

A long silence followed.

Then Ava's breathing became audible in the recording.

She must have been close to the device.

Rebecca spoke.

"What exactly are you giving her Christmas morning?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally Jennifer said, "Same thing, stronger."

Lisa swore.

"You said it was just something to calm her."

"It is."

"Four times stronger isn't calming."

Jennifer snapped, "Nobody said four times."

Evelyn said, "I did. And I said absolutely not."

That surprised me again.

"Then whose plan is it?" Rebecca asked.

Jennifer answered.

"Mine."

I paused the recording.

There was no ambiguity.

No memory trick.

No misunderstanding.

Jennifer had chosen the increased dosage.

My daughter had planned it.

Thomas's face was pale.

"Maggie, we need to stop listening and let the police process the rest."

"Not yet."

I resumed.

Lisa was crying on the recording now.

"I want out."

Michael told her she was already involved.

"I took a picture of a signature. That's it."

"You recorded Mom yesterday."

"You told me it was for the lawyer."

"And it is."

"No, it's for this."

Jennifer interrupted.

"You're going to ruin everything."

"I don't care."

"You'll care when Michael's creditors come after him and the bank takes my house and your kids can't afford college."

My attention sharpened.

Michael's creditors.

Jennifer's mortgage.

Lisa's children's education.

Each of them had a crisis.

Each had decided my assets were the solution.

Then Evelyn said, "If Lisa wants out, let her out."

Michael replied, "She knows too much."

The sentence was chilling, but Evelyn immediately snapped, "Do not talk like that."

Rebecca asked whether anyone had considered simply asking me for help.

Nobody answered.

That was the part that hurt almost as much as the rest.

They could have asked.

I might have helped.

Perhaps not with everything.

Certainly not without conditions.

But I would have listened.

Instead they had spent months designing a way around my consent.

The recording shifted.

Glass clinked.

Then Jennifer said, "After Christmas, Brennan won't matter. Once the power of attorney is active and Evelyn documents incapacity, Mom's accounts can cover the facility."

Michael added, "The house closes in January."

Evelyn said, "You still haven't shown me a legitimate deed."

Michael replied, "That's being handled."

By whom, none of them said.

I thought about the forged deed carrying Evelyn's electronic credentials.

Had she filed it knowingly?

Or had Michael used her professional access?

The recording ended with Ava picking up the tablet.

Her breathing became louder.

Then a whisper.

"Oh my God."

That was all.

I handed the phone to the officer.

"Take it."

He sent the file to evidence intake.

Thomas remained beside me.

I expected rage.

What came instead was exhaustion so deep I felt it in my bones.

"Did Richard know what they were becoming?" I asked.

Thomas looked toward his letter.

"Maybe he saw warning signs."

"He knew about the loans."

"Yes."

"He knew Michael already thought of this house as his."

"Yes."

"I wonder what else he knew."

That question led us back to the safe-deposit box.

Thomas called Mountain National Bank.

Because I was named co-renter on the original box agreement, access could be restored once identity and death documentation were confirmed.

The bank agreed to meet us the following morning.

Before we left the house, police collected the medication bottle, the hidden camera system's storage drive, several disturbed papers and prints from the study.

They also found something Rebecca had apparently dropped behind the desk.

A prepaid mobile phone.

Not mine.

The detective bagged it.

I did not sleep much that night.

Daniel arranged for a guard to remain outside.

Thomas wanted me to stay with a friend.

I almost laughed.

Which friend?

The woman I trusted most had been working with my children.

So I remained home.

At three in the morning, I stood in the kitchen and made coffee.

Snow glowed blue outside the windows.

I looked at Richard's chair.

"For once, choose your own life," I whispered.

The next morning, Thomas arrived at eight.

Mountain National Bank opened the box in a private viewing room.

Inside were four folders, several sealed envelopes, two flash drives and a small black notebook.

The first folder contained the promissory notes.

Jennifer: eighty-four thousand dollars.

Michael: one hundred twenty-seven thousand.

Lisa: sixty-one thousand.

Interest had been specified but never enforced.

The second folder contained documents I had never seen.

Copies of checks.

Wire transfers.

Canceled loan applications.

Three signatures that appeared to be Richard's.

Thomas studied them.

"These don't look right."

I felt cold again.

"What are they?"

"Guarantees."

"For what?"

He turned one page.

"Michael's company."

Richard had refused to guarantee Michael's business loan.

Yet here were later documents appearing to show that he had.

The total exposure exceeded three hundred thousand dollars.

"Did the bank ever collect?"

"Apparently not. The loans were restructured."

"Why keep copies?"

"Maybe Richard suspected forgery."

The black notebook answered that.

Richard had dated his entries.

Short notes.

Michael asked again.

Refused.

Jennifer called about money.

Lisa frightened about tuition.

Then, two months before Richard's death:

Found signature page in study moved.

Asked Michael. Denied touching it.

Another entry:

Bank called regarding guarantee I never signed.

And finally:

Spoke to police contact informally. Need proof before accusing my son.

I sat down hard.

"This started before Richard died."

Thomas nodded.

The third folder contained correspondence with a forensic document examiner.

Richard had been gathering evidence that Michael forged his signature.

The last letter stated that two questioned signatures were "highly inconsistent" with Richard's known writing.

Then the investigation stopped.

Six weeks later, Richard died.

I looked at Thomas.

"He died of a heart attack."

"Yes."

"Natural causes."

"That was the determination."

"But he was investigating Michael."

Thomas understood what I was asking.

"Maggie, don't jump beyond the evidence."

"I know."

But the thought already existed.

The fourth folder contained life-insurance records.

That was where another surprise waited.

Richard had once held a two-million-dollar policy.

I knew about the policy that paid after his death.

I did not know there had been a second one.

This policy named me as beneficiary.

But nine days before Richard died, a beneficiary change had been submitted.

The new beneficiary was Hale Family Holdings.

The same entity that had appeared on the forged deed.

My pulse quickened.

"Hale Family Holdings existed thirteen years ago?"

Thomas checked the incorporation document clipped behind the policy.

"Apparently."

"Who owns it?"

He read further.

Then frowned.

"Originally?"

"Yes."

"Michael Hale and Jennifer Hale."

I stared at him.

Jennifer had been involved back then.

Not just now.

The beneficiary change had not gone through.

The insurer rejected it because Richard's signature did not match the one on file.

He died before anyone tried again.

I thought about Jennifer's handwritten dosage plan.

About Michael's old forged guarantee.

About the current false power of attorney.

They had not invented deception this Christmas.

They had returned to a method they had tried before.

At the bottom of the box lay one final sealed envelope.

My name was on it again.

This time, Richard had written something beneath it.

Open only if Michael ever tries to take the house.

My fingers shook as I tore the seal.

Inside were two pages and a photograph.

The photograph showed Michael and Jennifer sitting at our kitchen table.

Across from them was a woman thirty years younger than the Evelyn I knew.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same face.

I turned the picture over.

Richard had written a date.

Fourteen years earlier.

And one sentence.

Evelyn Parker introduced herself today as Jennifer's friend from the title company.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Evelyn Had Known My Children Long Before She Befriended Me, and Richard’s Second Letter Explained Why He Never Trusted Her

The detective said Jennifer's name.
