she said.

Three mornings later, I woke with chest pressure.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Evelyn handled my medication."

The officer straightened.

"When?"

"Before I went to the hospital."

"Did doctors determine what caused the episode?"

"No. They thought stress or a medication reaction."

"Do you have the pills from that week?"

I thought.

After returning home, I had emptied the organizer because I worried I had made a mistake.

I placed the old pills inside a plastic bag.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"My bathroom cabinet."

The officer immediately called the detective handling the case.

I was instructed not to return home until police had searched it.

Daniel sent guards to the property.

Then my phone rang.

Ava.

I answered immediately.

"Grandma?"

Her voice was a whisper.

"Sweetheart, where are you?"

"The hotel."

"With whom?"

"Aunt Rebecca and the kids."

My heart began pounding.

"Is Evelyn there?"

"No."

"Where is your mother?"

"She isn't back."

I looked at the officer.

"Is Rebecca packing?"

Ava went silent.

Then whispered, "Yes."

"Go into the bathroom."

"What?"

"Take your phone. Lock the door."

"Grandma, I'm scared."

"I know. Police are coming."

"I have something."

"What?"

"A recording."

I closed my eyes.

"What recording?"

"I left my tablet downstairs last night. When I went to get it, Mom and everybody were talking."

"Everybody?"

"Uncle Michael. Aunt Lisa. Aunt Rebecca."

A pause.

"And your friend."

"Evelyn?"

"Yes."

"What were they saying?"

"That you changed your will."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Anything else?"

"Uncle Michael said they couldn't wait anymore."

The officer beside me began writing.

"Ava, did they mention my medicine?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

The room became very quiet.

"What did they say?"

"I didn't understand."

"Tell me what you remember."

"Evelyn said the first time wasn't enough."

The first time.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

"What else?"

"Uncle Michael asked if she could make you confused during Christmas dinner."

I looked at Thomas.

Ava continued.

"Evelyn said she had something stronger. Aunt Lisa told them to stop."

"Send me the recording."

"Okay."

"Then stay locked in the bathroom."

Police were dispatched to the hotel.

Rebecca attempted to leave through a service exit with the children.

Officers stopped her.

In her luggage they found jewelry from my study, copies of financial records and one of Richard's old checkbooks.

Evelyn remained missing.

At 4:17 that afternoon, police located her vehicle at Denver International Airport.

She had purchased a ticket to Phoenix using her maiden name.

Officers detained her before she reached the gate.

Richard's letter was inside her handbag.

So were eighteen thousand dollars in cash, two identification cards, a copy of my healthcare directive and an empty prescription bottle bearing my name.

Police searched my house before allowing me home.

The study window had been covered with plywood.

The wall safe stood open.

Drawers had been emptied.

Several photographs lay facedown on the carpet.

I picked up my wedding picture.

Richard and I were twenty-three.

His hair was too long.

My dress had been borrowed.

We barely had two hundred dollars between us.

Yet I could still remember how rich I felt that day.

We built everything together.

The house.

The savings.

The family.

My children had looked at that life and seen a price.

I returned the photograph to the desk.

Then I went upstairs.

The bathroom cabinet was empty.

"The bag is gone."

Thomas looked at the officer.

"They removed it."

My phone rang before anyone could answer.

The detective.

"Mrs. Hale, we've recovered the bag."

"Where?"

"Evelyn Parker's suitcase."

My knees weakened.

"What was in it?"

"The medication is being tested."

He paused.

"We also recovered a notebook."

"What kind?"

"Dates. Dosages. Notes concerning your behavior."

Thomas guided me toward a chair.

"What does it say?"

The detective read one entry.

December third.

Subject experienced dizziness following morning dose. Recovered within approximately two hours. No outside contact.

Subject.

Not Maggie.

Not friend.

Subject.

Another entry corresponded to the morning of my hospital admission.

It described chest pressure.

The emergency call.

My attempt to contact my children.

Their failure to respond.

Evelyn had known.

She had known exactly how frightened and alone I was.

Then she had used that loneliness to get closer.

"Did my children know?"

"We're examining your granddaughter's recording."

I wanted to believe their greed had limits.

That they wanted my house but not my life.

That somewhere beneath everything, there remained a boundary none of them would cross.

Then the detective said the hospital had retained a blood sample from my admission.

Preliminary testing had identified medication that did not appear among my prescriptions.

"What medication?"

"A sedative sometimes used before medical procedures."

I looked at Thomas.

The detective continued.

"Combined with one of your heart medications, it can produce confusion, weakness, low blood pressure and rhythm disturbances."

My hands began shaking.

The hospital episode had not been random.

Someone had tested what would happen if I became impaired.

Someone wanted to know whether I would call for help.

And someone had learned something valuable when my children failed to come.

"Could that dose have killed me?"

The detective hesitated.

"Probably not by itself."

"Probably?"

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"The notebook contains a second dosage plan."

"For when?"

"December twenty-fifth."

Christmas Day.

The day my children expected to be inside my house.

The day Evelyn expected access to my medication.

The day Jennifer expected to use the false power of attorney.

"How strong?"

"Nearly four times the earlier amount."

I stared at Richard's photograph.

They had not merely planned to pressure me at Christmas.

They intended for me to appear confused.

Incapacitated.

Unable to object while decisions were made around me.

Then the detective spoke again.

"Mrs. Hale, there's one more thing."

"What?"

"We've compared the handwriting in the dosage notebook with documents collected today."

I waited.

"The dosage instructions weren't written by Evelyn."

My mouth went dry.

"Then who wrote them?"

He hesitated just long enough for me to become afraid of the answer.

"One of your children."

I thought immediately of Michael.

The forged paperwork.

The binder.

The break-in.

The rage.

But when the detective finally told me whose handwriting matched the instructions, the name he gave me was not Michael's.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Handwriting Was Jennifer’s, but the Recording From My Granddaughter Revealed Who Had First Suggested Making Me Look Incapable

Evelyn's empty chair seemed impossible.
