added,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother believed you were connected to that family somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you said the baby wasn&#39;t yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who was the father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what I came here to help you find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent again.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mara.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie, I need you to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found a discrepancy in the hospital records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe miscarriage you&#39;re talking about isn&#39;t the only pregnancy record associated with your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Mara continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ryan&#39;s attorney has requested the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the blood drain from my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Ryan apparently already knows about the earlier pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had told him.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been feeding him pieces of my past.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly the question wasn&#39;t only who the father of that first child had been.<\/p>\n<p>It was why Ryan had been
