And that all further communication should come through counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she believe you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe requested the original document and asked how it was signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let out a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the right questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no new order authorizing the relocation. Your existing arrangement remains in effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>The children were drawing with chalk.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sat on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I have to prove I&#39;m never sad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to prove what actually happened. We&#39;ll get it sorted.<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see this before the wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you think it meant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you&#39;d already signed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first honest thing she had said.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the phone back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend the entire thread to Mara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire twisted a napkin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you barely got out of bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever come over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call the school?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask the children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she whispered, \u201cI knew you were still taking them to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw you once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside the elementary school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the day.<\/p>\n<p>Ben had fallen asleep against my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia had been showing me a painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked tired,\u201d Claire said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the painting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Purple roof.<\/p>\n<p>Five figures.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>The four children.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth figure was only a tiny shape in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>I had cried later.<\/p>\n<p>At school, I had smiled and told Amelia I loved the purple roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there,\u201d Claire whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I still believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the closest she had come to an apology.<\/p>\n<p>Not that she hadn&#39;t known.<\/p>\n<p>That she had decided knowing was inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend the emails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not ready to make you feel better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, she didn&#39;t follow me.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, my father came alone.<\/p>\n<p>I saw him sitting in his car for nearly five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then he got out carrying a large envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom doesn&#39;t know I&#39;m here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me something she does know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows I&#39;ve told her this has gone too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan came to our house three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said there were divorce papers and old family documents that needed organizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom help him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked me to scan some pages because her printer wasn&#39;t working properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia and Ben were on the floor building a block tower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the wedding, Amelia asked whether she could still see her friends after they moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought everyone knew except her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went back through the scans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were two documents.<\/p>\n<p>The relocation agreement.<\/p>\n<p>And an old school enrollment form.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the second immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I had signed it the previous year at my parents&#39; dining table.<\/p>\n<p>The signature looked almost identical to the one on the relocation agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Same long curve.<\/p>\n<p>Same upward stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Same tiny dark mark near the first letter.<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know who copied it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know where the signature came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you tell Mara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if Mom tells you not to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those words couldn&#39;t repair the past.<\/p>\n<p>But they mattered.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie, are the children with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.
