I have been sad because of things that happened. Preserve everything. Send me your existing parenting order and every message you&#39;ve received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For months, people had told me what I should feel.<\/p>\n<p>Mara gave me something better.<\/p>\n<p>A task.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, I changed out of the clothes I&#39;d worn to the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia sat on my bed while I folded a sweater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you want to read your letter at the wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy gave me a different one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her purse.<\/p>\n<p>The second paper was printed on thick cream stock.<\/p>\n<p>Across the top were words I immediately disliked.<\/p>\n<p>AMELIA&#39;S READING.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Today isn&#39;t only the day Daddy marries Claire. It&#39;s the day our family becomes whole.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>The next lines spoke about a fresh start.<\/p>\n<p>A happier home.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving sadness behind.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the part that made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>It described their new house.<\/p>\n<p>Their new life.<\/p>\n<p>Their next adventure.<\/p>\n<p>And all of us moving together.<\/p>\n<p>That had been their plan.<\/p>\n<p>They hadn&#39;t simply expected Amelia to congratulate them.<\/p>\n<p>They had planned to use my child to announce a decision they had made without me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave you this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had told me they were only picking up Amelia&#39;s shoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell them you didn&#39;t want to read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Daddy say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I could change some words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the handwritten version.<\/p>\n<p>She had changed almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn&#39;t gone to the microphone to destroy their wedding.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone because she thought, somehow, that if she asked the question in front of enough adults, someone would finally answer honestly.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel answered from downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let it ring.<\/p>\n<p>A message arrived seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>I sent the document. Check your email.<\/p>\n<p>I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Ellis agreed to stay longer with the children.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the attachment.<\/p>\n<p>Four pages.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>The names and birth dates of all four children.<\/p>\n<p>A proposed address nearly four hundred miles away.<\/p>\n<p>A schedule that would leave me with portions of school holidays and occasional weekends.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed start date was less than three weeks away.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the final page was a signature.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I questioned myself.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I had signed something and forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe exhaustion had made me careless.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the date.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my calendar.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, I had been at Ben&#39;s preschool concert.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had been with me.<\/p>\n<p>We had photographs.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t signed anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t sign this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it to Mara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Then I called Claire.<\/p>\n<p>She answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you&#39;d understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t sign it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan said your lawyer had seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy lawyer is seeing it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire breathed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie, I already booked movers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou booked movers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew about the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know he told Amelia I wanted the children gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not how he explained it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he explain it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>At the cereal bowls.<\/p>\n<p>At the drawings on the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>At the ordinary life I had continued building while everyone else apparently discussed removing me from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed help,\u201d I said. \u201cI needed my husband to answer the phone. I needed my sister to stop sleeping with him. I needed my mother to give me my daughter&#39;s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed people to tell me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know about the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew about the move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you couldn&#39;t handle talking to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That part was true.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t wanted to see Claire.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t wanted to hear her voice.<\/p>\n<p>But she had turned my silence into permission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did the document come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan emailed it to me last Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForward the original email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my name is on something I never signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then she agreed.<\/p>\n<p>By early evening, Mara called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe document doesn&#39;t replace your existing order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he can&#39;t just take them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an existing arrangement. I&#39;m reviewing the disputed signature and the proposed relocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the ceremony, my feet felt firmly planted.<\/p>\n<p>Then the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>She had changed out of her wedding clothes.<\/p>\n<p>She wore the soft cardigan she always chose when she wanted to appear harmless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children are inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know about the move?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour sister found a lovely house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know about the document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan has been trying to find a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie, you haven&#39;t been yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost my baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You know it happened.
