did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t yell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her into my arms.<\/p>\n<p>At first she remained rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Then her shoulders shook.<\/p>\n<p>I held her tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re coming home with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Daddy is mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy can be mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma me a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>At the top, in careful handwriting, were two words.<\/p>\n<p>FOR DADDY.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>The first lines were ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote about pancakes.<\/p>\n<p>About how Ryan carried Ben upstairs when he pretended to be asleep.<\/p>\n<p>About how she loved the way her father made silly faces when nobody was watching.<\/p>\n<p>She had tried to be fair.<\/p>\n<p>Then the tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that Ryan had asked her to say their family was finally complete.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that she didn&#39;t understand why.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that she already had a mother.<\/p>\n<p>Then she wrote something about Claire asking her to call her Mom.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Aunt Claire ask you to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it would make things easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>I continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>The last paragraph was about the baby.<\/p>\n<p>My baby.<\/p>\n<p>Our baby.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia wrote that she didn&#39;t want to forget the child we never brought home.<\/p>\n<p>Then, beneath everything else, she had squeezed in one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#39;t want to keep your secret anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat secret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia glanced at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan entered.<\/p>\n<p>His tie was loose.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stood behind him in her wedding dress.<\/p>\n<p>Her bouquet was crushed slightly where she had been gripping it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you are,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes fell on the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie, we need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven&#39;t finished the ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmelia, sweetheart, I know today has been confusing, but you hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia pressed against my side.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t owe you an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me look cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask her to call you Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never forced her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought it might help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>I bent down and picked up Amelia&#39;s purse.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I have a minute with my daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia grabbed my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is my child too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she doesn&#39;t want to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmelia, look at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She kept her eyes down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDidn&#39;t we agree you would handle things privately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not concern.<\/p>\n<p>Not tenderness.<\/p>\n<p>A warning.<\/p>\n<p>I straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat secret did you ask her to keep?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan&#39;s expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s nine. She doesn&#39;t always understand what happened when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t ask when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve done enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then she answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked why you weren&#39;t answered the night you went to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me seemed to stop.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The night I lost the baby.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered lying under fluorescent lights.<\/p>\n<p>My hands trembling.<\/p>\n<p>My phone beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Calling Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>He had later told me his phone died.<\/p>\n<p>He had said he didn&#39;t know until morning.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you didn&#39;t get my calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said we should talk about this later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>That look told me something.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Daddy&#39;s tablet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needed me,\u201d Amelia whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at warned her that if she told me Claire had been there, I would make him leave and she might lose him.<\/p>\n<p>Then she begged me not to stop her from seeing her father.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>All those months.<\/p>\n<p>The stomachaches before visits.<\/p>\n<p>The silence.<\/p>\n<p>The fear.<\/p>\n<p>I had mistaken them for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept my daughter&#39;s words from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan reached toward the paper.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are private family matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made a nine-year-old carry them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took Amelia&#39;s hand.<\/p>\n<p>We headed for the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Then Amelia stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I still have to go on Friday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy weekend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you said after the wedding we&#39;re moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Claire lowered her bouquet.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnie,\u201d Ryan said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy said you agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said when they come back from their trip, all four of us would go with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire turned sharply toward Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me she signed the papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hung in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally looked at
