Khloe\u2019s photograph had been placed where mine should have been.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison stepped beside me. \u201cPlease come inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Natalie Bennett,\u201d I told her. \u201cI own this property, and I have never agreed to sell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head slowly. \u201cWe met you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed to the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl tugged at her sleeve. The woman handed her a phone and asked her to sit on the couch for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then she introduced herself.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Her husband, Adam, was parking nearby.<\/p>\n<p>When he arrived carrying a stuffed rabbit, he immediately knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cThe woman we met wasn\u2019t Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the next twenty minutes, the future they thought they had purchased came apart across my kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had told them the house belonged to his sister-in-law, who worked in Dubai and needed a fast sale before returning overseas. The asking price had been five hundred forty thousand dollars\u2014low enough to make them move quickly, but not so low that it automatically looked fraudulent.<\/p>\n<p>No agent.<\/p>\n<p>No commission.<\/p>\n<p>A supposedly motivated overseas seller.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe had initially met them as herself.<\/p>\n<p>Later, during the signing lunch, she became me.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca rubbed both hands over her face. \u201cWe thought you looked alike because you were sisters. She wore glasses the second time and put her hair up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe talked about Dubai?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy travel schedule?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary things I had told my sister had become pieces of a false identity.<\/p>\n<p>The forty-thousand-dollar deposit had been wired to a company Julian described as handling the transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison examined the instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Elise began making calls.<\/p>\n<p>Adam contacted his bank\u2019s fraud department.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody promised an easy recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca sat beside me while her daughter watched cartoons on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sold our townhouse,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re staying with Adam\u2019s parents until Friday. Our daughter already chose her room here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little girl had apparently brought a small measuring tape during the showing because she wanted to know where her bed would fit.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent all evening thinking Khloe and Julian had harmed Mom and me.<\/p>\n<p>Now another family was sitting in my kitchen discovering that the home they expected to move into did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison pointed to the seller\u2019s contact details.<\/p>\n<p>The email address resembled mine but contained an extra letter.<\/p>\n<p>The telephone number was unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>Then he showed me the signature.<\/p>\n<p>It was disturbingly close.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe had copied the upward stroke of my N and the hook at the end of my surname.<\/p>\n<p>But she had written my middle initial incorrectly.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca whispered, \u201cShe signed it in front of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>My sister had listened to these people talk about their daughter, their sold townhouse, their plans, and then deliberately written my name.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming back soon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am. Something happened here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Khloe back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom asked, \u201cDid somebody come about buying the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person at the table looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>I asked whether Khloe had ever pretended to be me when visitors came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me to stay in my room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day a woman came with papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison asked permission to join the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Mom agreed.<\/p>\n<p>He asked whether she had signed anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you told it was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I knew Natalie. That Natalie was my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they ask you, Martha?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom struggled to remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman asked whether that was my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she had.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe was her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The question had been technically true while creating an entirely false impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read what you signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have my glasses. Julian pointed to the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom heard our silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to examine the full document,\u201d Harrison said.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom asked the question I had been dreading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie, did I do something to your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were deceived. Whatever they put in front of you, you were not told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will deal with the paper. You are not dealing with this alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left Harrison and Elise with Rebecca and Adam and drove back to the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was sitting on the bed fully dressed.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoes were on.<\/p>\n<p>Her handbag rested in her lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you dressed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we might need to go somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>My mother was sitting in a hotel room I had paid for, wearing shoes in the middle of the night because she no longer trusted that she was permitted to remain anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re staying here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noticed the slippers I had brought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her smile lasted only a second.<\/p>\n<p>My phone began ringing.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>A message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to speak without Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed there were things I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>I took screenshots and forwarded them to him.<\/p>\n<p>My only reply was simple.<\/p>\n<p>Write what you need to say.<\/p>\n<p>After a long pause, her response arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Julian said you had agreed.<\/p>\n<p>I typed back:<\/p>\n<p>You put your photograph on my passport.<\/p>\n<p>No answer followed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom came from the bathroom and saw my face. \u201cKhloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the phone facedown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of me wanted to agree. I wanted to ask why she had protected them while I missed six years of birthdays and holidays trying to give her security.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I looked at her injured knees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they tell you would happen if you talked to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked at the hotel blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian said you were tired of supporting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Khloe was the reason you hadn\u2019t already sold the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Khloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cried when I said I would call you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you already thought she was a failure. She said if I loved both of you, I wouldn\u2019t create another fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked toward the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought everything would settle down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow we write down everything you remember. Not what protects me. Not what protects Khloe. Just what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Near midnight, Harrison called.<\/p>\n<p>The buyers had filed a report. The transaction documents were being collected. The company receiving the deposit was being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Then he raised another issue.<\/p>\n<p>Who had access to my personal records?<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the locked cabinet in the study.<\/p>\n<p>Passports.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance records.<\/p>\n<p>Employment contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Old tax documents.<\/p>\n<p>I had left the key with Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Then another memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen months earlier, Khloe had emailed asking for a copy of my passport.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed she needed it for a surprise cruise she wanted to arrange for Mom.<\/p>\n<p>There had never been a cruise.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded the old email to Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>At twelve thirty-eight, someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Three quiet taps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe.<\/p>\n<p>Through the peephole I saw her alone.<\/p>\n<p>A thick brown envelope was pressed against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door but kept the security latch fastened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you find us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom mentioned the hotel earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pushed the envelope through the narrow opening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took this from Julian\u2019s bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to Harrison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall him afterward.
