first time since Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the closed toilet lid and pressed both palms against my eyes until colored spots appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Six Kane wanted evidence eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>Carla refused to meet him.<\/p>\n<p>That explained the twenty-five thousand she had taken from Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He paid her to disappear with the copy rather than surrender it to Kane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Mark protect the ledger?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it protected Mark too,\u201d Carla said.<\/p>\n<p>Always leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Always mutually assured destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators now had the original.<\/p>\n<p>Kane knew it.<\/p>\n<p>His reason to remain cautious was disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Then, at 3:18 that afternoon, the surveillance team lost him.<\/p>\n<p>His vehicle remained at a downtown garage.<\/p>\n<p>A second vehicle left through a service exit.<\/p>\n<p>By the time investigators connected it to one of his associates, Kane was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret immediately moved Sophie, Evan, Denise, and me to a secure location.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth objected when I tried to remain at Harbor House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not helping anyone by making this building part of your danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>I hated it.<\/p>\n<p>We left.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, the four of us sat in a furnished corporate paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan says the plan was never limited to forging the trust release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Kane wanted a document giving Mark authority over your medical decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan claims Kane wanted a backup if the financial-incompetence strategy failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of backup?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice was careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA way to create the appearance that you were unable to manage your own affairs after an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely hear myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan says he doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas had been planned as more than a property theft.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been preparing for the possibility that I might need to be declared incapable of objecting.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, the guardianship discussions Linda described no longer sounded like legal
