A handwritten schedule. Payment instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the person who set it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo an intermediary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnected to Kane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove Kane ordered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove Mark knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse case could move from suspicious insurance claim to conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want in exchange?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is law enforcement territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you willing to meet them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carla said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years of fear.<\/p>\n<p>Six months of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months of forged identity documents.<\/p>\n<p>And the first true witness was finally willing to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Before ending the call, I asked one last question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarla.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark ever say he loved me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at me sharply.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a legal question.<\/p>\n<p>I knew.<\/p>\n<p>I needed it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Carla was quiet for so long that I regretted asking.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile planning all this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Carla said softly. \u201cBut people like Mark can love someone and still decide that person is expendable when fear gets bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the answer because it allowed complexity.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted Mark to be empty.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted every good moment in our marriage to become fake.<\/p>\n<p>That would have been easier.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, perhaps he had loved me.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he loved Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he loved Evan.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had even loved Denise once.<\/p>\n<p>And still, when consequences approached, he moved risk onto all of us.<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Outside Margaret\u2019s window, snow moved sideways through the canyon of downtown buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Denise sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret closed her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarla meets investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSooner or later, they will approach him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>My prepaid phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Another unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>This time, Margaret\u2019s investigator checked it first.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Christmas morning, he did not sound angry.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded defeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you spoke to Carla.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to understand something before they arrest me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret silently activated a recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKane is not going to let any of us walk away from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou. The kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sophie and Evan.<\/p>\n<p>They could not hear him from across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do, Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing filled the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. What did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ran out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another breath.<\/p>\n<p>Then a sound behind him.<\/p>\n<p>A car door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have something you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had it for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger Carla copied.<\/p>\n<p>The record tying Mark and Kane to the old money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst Kane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen give it to police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it proves what I did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Mark admitted it.<\/p>\n<p>Not fully.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it prove?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I moved the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestor money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Kane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost two million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room disappeared around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the warehouse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you know I didn\u2019t start the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou arranged it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know it would happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to meet me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if I give the ledger to police, Kane will come after everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe already came after you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>A sound I had never heard from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas morning flashed through my mind.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>His coffee.<\/p>\n<p>His calm voice telling me not to come home.<\/p>\n<p>The relief on his face when I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>He had expected me to disappear quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Now he was begging me to meet him because the silence he depended on had collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Do not meet him.<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive the ledger to your attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to see you first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, if I get arrested before I give you the ledger, you lose the one thing that can protect the kids from Kane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved toward Sophie and Evan.<\/p>\n<p>That was deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>He still knew which pressure points to use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the ledger have to do with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows Kane\u2019s accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounts he still uses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can trace his money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that protects the kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government freezes his network, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote on a legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>KEEP HIM TALKING.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell you in person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There he was.<\/p>\n<p>The real Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Fear wrapped around control.<\/p>\n<p>Even now.<\/p>\n<p>Even with everything collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou destroy it,\u201d I said, \u201cand you destroy the only bargaining power you think you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>He knew I was right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I had stopped caring.<\/p>\n<p>Because apology was too small for the damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive the ledger to police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call you again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret immediately contacted investigators.<\/p>\n<p>They began attempting to locate Mark.<\/p>\n<p>His known phone had gone dark.<\/p>\n<p>His car had not been seen at the house.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar\u2019s office was locked.<\/p>\n<p>For the next two hours, every person in the room moved through calls, documents, and security instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel received an alert.<\/p>\n<p>One of Northstar\u2019s dormant corporate accounts had just transferred three hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo where?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn account associated with Arthur Kane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark was still paying him.<\/p>\n<p>Even now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan it be frozen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorities are working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another alert appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Different accounts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s emptying Northstar,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n<p>I understood Mark better now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s buying time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The call.<\/p>\n<p>The threat to destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor one final deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My secure phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time it was Sophie\u2019s forensic examiner.<\/p>\n<p>He had recovered a deleted message from Mark\u2019s management profile on her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Sent to an unknown number two days before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The text was short.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner, I\u2019ll have her out of the house. Then we can finish the papers.<\/p>\n<p>My chest went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas had never been about Denise.<\/p>\n<p>It had never been about family time.<\/p>\n<p>Mark needed me gone because someone was coming to my house.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who intended to finish documents while I was absent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>The examiner continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>Bring the trust copy.
