We\u2019re sending someone now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m already somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left my apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another reason I called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat news?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou at the shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My face on television.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of all this.<\/p>\n<p>Linda continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark told me you were leaving him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were taking money and planning to disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told everyone a different version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he told me something else after the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if investigators ever contacted me, I should say you were mentally unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body went cold.<\/p>\n<p>The story had been broader than even we knew.<\/p>\n<p>Not just financially reckless.<\/p>\n<p>Not just possessive of the children.<\/p>\n<p>Unstable.<\/p>\n<p>A woman whose testimony could be dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret asked, \u201cDid Mark ever discuss having Claire evaluated, hospitalized, or declared incompetent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me if I knew anyone who could help with guardianship documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>She stared back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuardianship?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice became extremely controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout a month ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently forged powers of attorney and property documents had not been too much.<\/p>\n<p>But guardianship crossed Linda\u2019s line.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret asked, \u201cWhat exactly did Mark say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Claire was becoming irrational with money. That he might need authority to protect the assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The final structure.<\/p>\n<p>If divorce did not give him control quickly enough, he had considered another route.<\/p>\n<p>Paint me as unstable.<\/p>\n<p>Create false financial records.<\/p>\n<p>Show them to family.<\/p>\n<p>Build witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Then claim I could not manage my own affairs.<\/p>\n<p>He had not merely planned to leave me.<\/p>\n<p>He had planned to make my own credibility part of the collateral.<\/p>\n<p>The call ended after arrangements were made to secure Linda and the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel\u2019s voice came from the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten he was still connected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the warehouse security image enhancement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Not relief.<\/p>\n<p>We already knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ran the image through records Voss provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked grim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman resembles Carla Benton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vanished bookkeeper.<\/p>\n<p>The cooperating witness.<\/p>\n<p>The woman whose payment had been redirected into my name.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who disappeared fifteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she with Mark the night of the fire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Mark knows where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one contradicted me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at the insurance photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that is Carla Benton, then the warehouse fire may connect the old fraud scheme directly to what Mark is doing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the grainy image.<\/p>\n<p>A woman who had vanished from everyone else\u2019s life had reappeared near my husband\u2019s burning property.<\/p>\n<p>And six months later, money intended for her ended up in an account created under my identity.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Carla knew had not disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>It had followed Mark for fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Now it had reached me.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=8160\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Carla Benton Finally Called, and What She Knew About the Fire Explained Why Mark Needed Me to Look Guilty<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The warehouse fire happened on June 14.
