We each deposited an agreed amount every month.<\/p>\n<p>I had never donated a dollar from that account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see my name on the records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the actual transactions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen somebody made them look real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise was silent.<\/p>\n<p>In the background, I heard Evan ask what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cDo not confront Mark yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf those records are false, I need to know how they were created before he knows we\u2019re checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, he\u2019s in the next room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen lower your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>I began walking toward Ruth\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Memory was reorganizing itself as I moved.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months earlier, I had received a banking alert at work showing a withdrawal I did not recognize. You told Evan to ask me about his grandfather when he was doing that family-history project. You invited me to Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mark knew all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the part that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever story he had told Denise was not a misunderstanding. Leave it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I could almost hear Evan forcing himself to obey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay together,\u201d I said. \u201cAll three of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s voice became small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you come home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question hurt more than anything Mark had said.<\/p>\n<p>I pictured her standing in the house where I had wrapped her presents the previous night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because your father may have stolen from me.<\/p>\n<p>Because he may be framing me.<\/p>\n<p>Because I suddenly don\u2019t know what belongs to whom.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I said, \u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, Ruth was standing a few feet away.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard enough to know something serious had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband may have moved money from our joint account and made it look as though I donated it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout forty-eight thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an amount I would forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat across from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re saying Harbor House supposedly received it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what he told his ex-wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the treasurer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s after midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth was already reaching for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur treasurer has three children under ten. She will hate me forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her I\u2019ll buy them breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth gave me a grim smile.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, the treasurer was awake and checking remote records.<\/p>\n<p>I listened from the other side of Ruth\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>At first there was nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ruth\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She grabbed a pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wrote $9,500.<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was one,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s checking the donor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>The fluorescent light above Ruth\u2019s desk buzzed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Ruth put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The treasurer said, \u201cThe donor listed is Claire Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are three more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read the amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Eight thousand seven hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen thousand three hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth added them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-eight thousand five hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Close enough to Denise\u2019s figure that coincidence was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did they originate?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Keyboard clicks sounded through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The treasurer hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly from your household account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA business account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More typing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar Property Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name struck something in my memory.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had mentioned Northstar once over dinner months earlier. A friend\u2019s real-estate company, he said. Commercial investments. Nothing involving us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you preserve everything?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrint it. Save copies. Don\u2019t alter the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth watched me with an expression I had never seen on her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, do you know Northstar?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Mark knows the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message from him.<\/p>\n<p>Come home.
