A little girl stood barefoot on a chair clutching a stuffed rabbit, watching adults carry plastic bags containing everything her family had brought with them.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth was on the phone with an emergency plumber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow soon?\u201d she asked. She listened, pinched the bridge of her nose, then looked at me. \u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever answer she received made her close her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>When she hung up, I asked, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristmas emergency rate. They want a thirty-eight-hundred-dollar deposit before they send anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out my wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stared at me. \u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUse my card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll reimburse you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied me for a second. \u201cYou\u2019ve had a bad day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean these people need to have a worse one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plumber arrived forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>By then, everyone from the annex had been moved into the main building. The refrigerator in the secondary kitchen had also failed after water reached an electrical connection, so volunteers began transferring food into coolers packed with snow and ice.<\/p>\n<p>It was chaotic, exhausting, and strangely clarifying.<\/p>\n<p>I did not have time to wonder what Mark was serving for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Around four, a local television crew arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago was experiencing one of its coldest Christmas periods in years, and the station was visiting shelters to report on emergency capacity. Ruth spoke to the reporter first. I stayed behind the camera carrying blankets and boxes.<\/p>\n<p>At least, I tried to.<\/p>\n<p>The reporter caught me while I was moving donated toiletries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me. Are you a volunteer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth called from across the room, \u201cShe is tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reporter smiled. \u201cWould you mind answering one question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the families crowded into the main hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The camera light came on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat brought you to Harbor House on Christmas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>There were several possible answers.<\/p>\n<p>My husband didn\u2019t want me at home.<\/p>\n<p>My family apparently had a definition of family that stopped including me when it became inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered this morning that six years of love can be erased with one adjective: real.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I said, \u201cMy plans changed, and they needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reporter glanced toward the flooded corridor. \u201cYou also paid the emergency plumbing deposit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>She had betrayed me with an unapologetic shrug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was to the shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shifted the box in my arms. \u201cPeople needed somewhere warm to sleep. I happened to be able to solve one problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reporter lowered her voice. \u201cWhat are you taking from tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked past her.<\/p>\n<p>A boy was arranging donated toy cars in a straight line beneath the tree. His mother sat nearby with her shoes off, rubbing her swollen feet. Two volunteers were serving soup from mismatched pots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes Christmas doesn\u2019t happen the way you planned,\u201d I said. \u201cYou find out where you can be useful, and you start there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>The camera moved away.<\/p>\n<p>By six, I had forgotten about it.<\/p>\n<p>At home, however, Mark had not.<\/p>\n<p>I learned later that Sophie, Evan, Denise, and Mark were all in the living room when the segment aired shortly after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>They had spent dinner wondering why I had not returned.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had apparently maintained that I wanted to give them private time together.<\/p>\n<p>Then my face appeared on television.<\/p>\n<p>Not at a hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Not sulking somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Not celebrating elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>At Harbor House.<\/p>\n<p>The reporter described the flooded annex, the displaced families, the volunteers, and the emergency repair. Then the screen showed me carrying a box while the reporter explained that a local volunteer had personally covered the deposit needed to restore heat and plumbing.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie recognized me first.<\/p>\n<p>Mark called seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated while I was folding chairs.<\/p>\n<p>I saw his name and considered ignoring it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded unlike the man who had calmly sent me away that morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you on television?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the questions he could have asked, that was the one he chose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause a television crew came here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mark. I really don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, I could hear voices.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Evan.<\/p>\n<p>Denise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you were going somewhere for the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you nothing of the kind. You never asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Harbor House?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made this look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me settled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made what look terrible?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know exactly what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I pictured him standing in our living room beneath the tree I had decorated, surrounded by people he had told a false story about me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you wanted me out of the house,\u201d I said. \u201cI left. What happened after that was my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was telling Sophie this was my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you talked to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerry Christmas, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Ten seconds later, Sophie called.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I was going to ask you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice trembled. \u201cDad is furious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. With everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on a folding chair beside a stack of blankets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after the news?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan asked why you were at a shelter if you supposedly wanted a quiet Christmas somewhere. Mom asked Dad what he actually said to you. He wouldn\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rubbed my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie, don\u2019t get dragged into our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we already are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about her tone made me straighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom told me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the room, Ruth switched off one bank of fluorescent lights. The shelter became softer, illuminated by lamps and Christmas-tree bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Denise tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Dad has been talking about you for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of talking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called Mom in October. He said things between you weren\u2019t right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>October.<\/p>\n<p>I mentally moved backward through the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Mark and I had gone to Evan\u2019s birthday dinner. We had spent a weekend in Wisconsin. We had discussed replacing the upstairs windows.<\/p>\n<p>He had never mentioned marital trouble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat maybe he rushed into marrying you. That he\u2019d been thinking about slowing things down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlowing down a six-year marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked Mom how we would react if you separated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked Denise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she encourage him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She says she told him to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like Denise.<\/p>\n<p>We were never close, but she had never been cruel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought he would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie continued. \u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the families settling down for the night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad told Mom you were getting too attached to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were trying to become our mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice rose despite myself. \u201cI have spent six years making sure neither of you ever felt forced to choose between Denise and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Sophie said something that changed the shape of the entire conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom didn\u2019t believe him at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed her things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure. Papers. Messages. Financial stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial stuff?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Dad claimed you\u2019d been hiding money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>The shelter sounds receded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the previous eight months.<\/p>\n<p>Bank notifications that disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Statements Mark had switched to paperless billing.<\/p>\n<p>Passwords he had changed because, he said, our bank was updating security.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of transactions I had questioned.<\/p>\n<p>Each one had received an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Technical issue.<\/p>\n<p>Duplicate charge.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing worth worrying about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie,\u201d I said carefully, \u201cis your mother still there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to speak to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants to talk to you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phone changed hands.<\/p>\n<p>Denise came on.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cClaire, I owe you an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor believing Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were trying to turn the children against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he showed me what he called proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat proof?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBank records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise hesitated long enough that I knew I would dislike the answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you\u2019d been moving money without telling him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Harbor House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked across the room at Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>She was handing a blanket to a woman with two small children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI donate here,\u201d I said. \u201cFrom my personal account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did Mark claim I moved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost fifty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chair beneath me suddenly felt unstable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout forty-eight thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered every strange bank alert I had dismissed because my husband told me not to worry.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas was no longer the problem.<\/p>\n<p>My marriage might not even be the largest problem.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had created a financial trail in my name.<\/p>\n<p>And the man who had asked me to disappear for the evening was the same man who had been showing it to other people.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=8155\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: His Ex-Wife Showed Me the Bank Records He Had Used Against Me, and Every Small Mystery Suddenly Connected<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The annex smelled of wet plaster and cold metal.
