Now I understood why my mother had been so careful about it.

We drove there before dawn.

The property had been abandoned for years. The orchard trees stood crooked against the gray sky, their branches bare and tangled. I remembered coming there as a child, though I had always thought those memories were ordinary.

They weren't.

At the rear of the property stood an old storage shed.

The key opened it.

Inside were rusted tools, broken crates, and a child's wooden chair.

I stopped.

I remembered that chair.

My mother used to sit there while I played.

Denise searched the floor.

There was a loose plank beneath the chair.

Under it was a metal box.

The key opened that too.

Inside was a notebook.

Not the ledger.

A diary.

My mother's handwriting filled the first pages.

I sat on the floor and began reading.

She wrote about Daniel.

About meeting him.

About realizing he was obsessed with controlling people through debt and insurance.

About discovering that he had recruited Thomas Hale.

Then came the part that made my hands tremble.

Daniel had fathered Vaughn.

My mother had tried to leave him.

Daniel threatened to take Vaughn.

When she refused, Daniel arranged for Evelyn to take custody of the child.

But my mother had hidden something before she left.

The Harvest ledger.

She had discovered that Daniel and Thomas were not merely profiting from insurance policies.

They were choosing victims.

And they were using people inside banks, credit unions, hospitals, insurance companies, and legal offices to make deaths look unrelated.

My mother wrote that she believed they had already killed several people.

She had copied enough evidence to destroy them.

Then she had me.

The final pages were written in a different tone.

If Daniel ever returns, Celia must never know Vaughn is her brother until she is old enough to protect herself.

I stopped reading.

Denise looked at me.

“He is your brother.”

I shook my head.

“Vaughn said he wasn't.”

“He may have been lying.”

“But the message said, ‘I am not your brother.
