If he wanted me to stop looking for Daniel, then Daniel was exactly where I needed to look. But Denise warned me not to make the mistake of assuming that every secret pointed toward the largest one. Vaughn had spent years controlling information by giving people one frightening truth whenever he needed them to ignore another.

Ruiz agreed. “We don't contact him yet.”

“He knows we found the birth certificate.”

“Good.”

I looked at him.

“Good?”

“It means he is scared.”

That thought should have comforted me. Instead, I remembered Vaughn standing in our kitchen, smiling while he handed me an energy drink. I remembered waking from sudden waves of exhaustion. I remembered the route notes, the brake investigation, the insurance policy, the photograph of my car. Fear had become something physical to me, something that could sit beside a cup of coffee and pretend to be ordinary.

Denise began examining the guardianship order.
