nodded.

That was the problem.

Whatever my mother intended, she had chosen to be there.

I called Susan.

“Does your father's photograph have a date?”

“Yes.”

“Time?”

“Six fifty-two in the morning.”

The train was scheduled for seven.

I remembered the whistle.

The platform.

My father's voice.

Then a strange detail came back.

My mother had whispered something to me.

I couldn't hear the words.

But I remembered her hand.

She had been holding my wrist.

Hard enough to leave marks.

I had thought she was afraid I would run.

Now I understood.

She had been afraid I would reach Russell.

We drove to the old station.

The original building was gone, replaced by a newer structure.

But the platform remained.

I stood where I believed I had stood in 1981.

Rebecca waited behind me.

I closed my eyes.

The past returned in fragments.

Russell across the platform.

My father between us.

My mother behind him.

The train doors opening.

Russell taking one step.

My father raising his hand.

Then the whistle.

I opened my eyes.

“He tried to come across.”

“What happened?”

“My father stopped him.”

“How?”

“I don't remember.”

We searched local archives.

The station had security records from that period.

Not much.

But Susan's father had kept a photograph.

There were more.

Six in total.

Each showed the platform from a different angle.

One captured Russell speaking to my father.

Another showed my mother pulling me toward the exit.

The final one showed Russell standing alone.

The train had gone.

I stared at it.

He was holding the envelope.

Then I noticed something.

The envelope was open.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Look.”

Rebecca leaned closer.

The photograph showed Russell looking down at a piece of paper.

The letter.

He had opened it.

But the next photograph showed him holding an empty envelope.

The letter was gone.

“Who took it?”

We checked the timestamps.

Only four minutes separated the photographs.

Someone had approached Russell.

A woman.

Not my mother.

Not Evelyn.

Someone I didn't recognize.

Susan magnified the image.

The woman's face was partly hidden.

But there was something familiar.

A bracelet.

A thin silver bracelet with a small oval charm.

I knew it.

My mother had owned one.

But this wasn't my mother.

It was someone else.

I called Evelyn.

She answered.

“Do you recognize this woman?”

I sent the photograph.

She called back almost immediately.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“My aunt.”

I froze.

“Walter Tate's wife.”

Her name was Helen.

I had never met her.

Evelyn explained that Helen had been deeply involved in the family business.

She had handled the debt records.

She had known about the agreement.

She had also blamed my father for failing to repay Walter.

“Why would she be at the station?”

Evelyn didn't know.

But Susan found another report.

Thomas Bell had written that Helen Tate confronted Russell after the train left.

The report said she demanded the letter.

Russell refused.

She told him that if he did not hand it over, she would tell Walter that Russell had stolen money from the family.

Russell still refused.

Helen left.

But the letter was gone.

I stared at the page.

“How?”

Susan didn't know.

Then we found the answer.

Thomas Bell had written:

“Russell gave the letter to someone else.”

“Who?”

The name had been crossed out.

But the ink beneath it was visible.

Mary Louise Turner.

I looked at Rebecca.

“He gave it to me.”

“But you don't remember.”

“No.”

I searched my memory.

The platform.

The crowd.

A hand.

Russell's hand.

A folded paper.

Then my father.

I remembered.

I had taken the letter.

I had hidden it inside my coat.

Then my mother had pulled me away.

At home, she had taken my coat.

She had searched the pockets.

She had found the letter.

I remembered her reading it.

I remembered begging her to give it back.

She had said, “There is nothing here you need to know.”

Then she burned it.

I began shaking.

Rebecca held me.

“She burned it?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't remember?”

“No.”

“But you remember her burning it.”

“Yes.”

We returned home.

I went through every old box.

Every drawer.

Every piece of furniture.

I was no longer looking for something my mother had hidden.

I was looking for something I had hidden.

The memory came slowly.

After my mother burned the letter, I had taken the envelope from the trash.

I had hidden it.

Why?

Because even at seventeen, some part of me didn't trust her.

I remembered where.

My old bedroom.

The floorboard beneath the radiator.

Rebecca and I went there.

The room had been renovated years earlier.

But the radiator remained.

We removed the cover.

Nothing.

Then Rebecca noticed the baseboard.

A narrow section was newer than the rest.

She pried it loose.

Behind it was a small metal tin.

My hands shook.

Inside was a charred piece of paper.

Only a few words survived.

Mary Lou.

I waited.

There was more.

“I didn't leave.”

My knees weakened.

Rebecca held my shoulder.

Another fragment:

“Meet me…”

The rest was burned.

But there was a final line.

“I'll wait.”

I cried.

That was enough.

He had written to me.

He had told me he didn't leave.

He had asked me to meet him.

He had waited.

And I had been prevented from reaching him.

But the envelope contained something else.

A faint imprint.

A number.

214.

The same storage unit.

I stared.

Russell had known that if the letter disappeared, he would need another way to reach me.

He had created the storage trail.

But he could not have predicted that it would take forty-three years.

I looked at the burned fragment.

Then Rebecca said something.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Your grandmother's name.”

I frowned.

“What about it?”

“Evelyn said Helen Tate was her aunt.”

“Yes.”

“But your mother called her something else in the old papers.”

I remembered.

Helen had appeared in one of the financial documents.

Beside her name was another designation.

Trustee.

I opened the old agreement.

There it was.

Helen Tate was the trustee of Walter Tate's estate.

That meant she had controlled the debt.

She had controlled the property documents.

She had been able to enforce the agreement.

And if my father had been unable to pay, she could have taken the house.

I looked at Rebecca.

“She had something to lose.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“The house.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Not ours.”

I pointed to the document.

“Walter Tate's property.”

Rebecca frowned.

I explained.

The debt agreement was not simply about my father's house.

It involved land belonging to the Tate family.

My father had been using that land as collateral.

If Russell and I married, the debt would disappear.

But if Russell left, the debt remained.

Helen had a financial reason to keep us apart.

Suddenly, the central conflict was larger than my parents.

There had been another person benefiting from the separation.

Someone who had watched.

Someone who had interfered.

Someone who had taken the letter.

And someone who might have known exactly where the locket ended up.

I called Evelyn.

“Was Helen alive in 1998?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Russell found the locket?”

A long silence.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“She asked him about it.”

“When?”

“After he found the records?”

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

“Because she wasn't the person Russell feared anymore.”

“Why?”

“She was
