notebook.

Finally, Rebecca found a brown document case.

The outside was marked:

TATE — 1981.

Inside was the statement.

I unfolded it.

It was typed.

At the top was my father's name.

The document said Russell Tate had chosen to leave town voluntarily and had no intention of contacting Mary Louise Turner again.

At the bottom was a blank signature line.

Russell had never signed it.

But beside the line was another handwritten note.

“Refused. to Walter Tate, perhaps even to me.

Something that would make the lie official.

Russell had refused.

I placed the document on the table.

Rebecca said, “He noticed something written on the back.

A date.

August 24, 1981.

And beneath it:

“Ask Mary what she remembers.”

I froze.

“What?”

Rebecca read it.

“Ask Mary what she remembers.”

My heart began pounding.

Russell had been trying to tell someone that my memory mattered.

But I had forgotten.

Or been made to forget.

I closed my eyes.

Then the memory returned.

The train station.

Not clearly.

A flash.

A bench.

My yellow blouse.

A red truck.

My father.

I opened my eyes.

“I went to the station.”

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

“I remember.”

“When?”

“August nineteenth.”

“You were like coffee.

I remembered the announcement over the loudspeaker.

A suitcase.

My mother holding my arm.

My father arguing with someone.

Then a whistle.

A train pulling away.

And Russell.

Standing across the platform.

I gasped.

Rebecca grabbed my hand.

“You saw him.”

“Yes.”

“Did he see you?”

“I don't know.”

The memory became sharper.

Russell was holding something.

An envelope.

He looked toward me.

Then my father stepped between us.

My father said something.

Russell shook his head.

Then my mother pulled me away.

I had been told later that Russell never came.

But he had.

He had been there.

We had both been there.

And somehow we had missed each other by seconds.

I remembered one final detail.

The envelope in Russell's hand.

It had my name on it.

The same letter he had refused to give my father.

The letter he had intended to give me himself.

I stood.

“We need to find out what was in it.”

Rebecca nodded.

“But how?”

I looked at the document.

Thomas Bell had written everything down.

If he had seen the letter, there might be a record.

We called Susan again.

She searched her father's files.

Twenty minutes later, she called.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

“Of the station?”

“Yes.”

“Can you send it?”

“I already did.”

The photograph appeared on my phone.

It was grainy.

Taken from a distance.

But I recognized the platform.

Russell stood beside the train.

I stood across from him.

Between us was my father.

And in Russell's hand was the envelope.

I zoomed in.

There was writing on it.

My name.

Then something else.

A second line.

I read it aloud.

“Please reach me.

Now I knew he had.

He had been standing ten yards away.

And my father had stood between us.

But the photograph contained one more detail.

A woman stood behind Russell.

I knew her.

She was wearing my mother's blue coat.

She was holding something against her chest.

The locket.

My mother had been
