had finally stopped deciding for me.

Too late.

But she had stopped.

She had left the truth where I could find it.

She had paid Russell's hospital bill.

She had helped him leave safely.

She had kept his photograph.

She had preserved the evidence.

And then she had spent the rest of her life carrying the shame of what she had done.

The recording ended.

Neither of us spoke.

After several minutes, Rebecca said, “Do you forgive her?”

I looked at the old cassette.

“I don't know.”

She nodded.

“But I don't hate her.”

“That may be enough.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It isn't forgiveness.”

“What is it?”

“Understanding.”

We packed everything carefully.

Before leaving, I walked through the bedroom one final time.

On the nightstand was an old framed photograph.

My mother and me.

I was perhaps ten.

She was smiling.

I remembered that day.

She had taken me to the river.

We had eaten sandwiches.

She had bought me a red scarf.

For years, I had wanted to remember only the bad things.

Now I saw the photograph differently.

She had loved me.

She had also harmed me.

Both were true.

Human beings could hold contradictions that never became neat.

I took the photograph with me.

Outside, Rebecca waited beside the car.

“What now?”

I looked at the house.

“Now I stop trying to decide who was innocent.”

She waited.

“And?”

“Now I decide what to do with the truth.”

We drove to the river.

I carried the locket.

The Mississippi moved beneath a pale afternoon sky.

I opened the heart-shaped case.

Inside were the two photographs.

The one from seventeen.

The one from our later years.

I touched the older photograph.

“We should have had more.”

Rebecca stood beside me.

“Yes.”

“But we had some.”

She smiled.

I closed the locket.

Then I did something I had never done in forty-three years.

I told the river the truth.

“I didn't throw you away.”

The words sounded foolish.

But they mattered.

I stayed there until sunset.

Then I noticed something in the mud near my shoe.

A small piece of metal.

I picked it up.

It was a broken clasp.

The original clasp from the locket.

Russell had given me the repaired one.

This was the damaged piece.

I remembered what he had said.

“I thought I'd repair it someday.”

He had.

Not perfectly.

Nothing could be perfect after forty-three years.

But he had repaired it enough to hold.

I placed the broken piece in my pocket.

Then I looked at Rebecca.

“Let's go home.”

She took my arm.

As we walked away, my phone rang.

It was Susan Bell.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Her voice was quiet.

“Mary, I found one more thing
