My mother's handwriting looked almost exactly as I remembered it: narrow, deliberate, every letter pressed firmly into the paper.

Rebecca had offered to stay.

I told her to go home.

“This is something I need to read alone,” I said.

She didn't like it, but she understood.

After she left, I made coffee and let it grow cold.

I wasn't afraid of what my mother might confess. I was afraid that whatever she had written would give me another version of the same night, another explanation I would have to carry for the rest of my life.

Eventually, I opened the envelope.

There were six pages.

The first began without a greeting.

“Mary Lou, if you ever find this, then I am no longer able to explain it myself.”

I stopped there.

My mother's words had always sounded certain when she spoke aloud.

On paper, they sounded frightened.

She wrote that she had known about Russell and me from the beginning.

She had watched us grow closer.

At first, she said, she thought it was harmless.

Then my father began losing money.

The debt to Walter Tate became impossible to hide.

My father borrowed more.

Then more.

Every payment only delayed the problem.

My mother wrote that Walter Tate eventually threatened to take the house.

She said my father became obsessed with protecting it.

He stopped sleeping.

He drank more.

He became suspicious of everyone.

And then he discovered that Russell planned to take me away.

My mother's next sentence made my hands stop.

“Your father believed that if you left with Russell, the house would be lost.”

I read it again.

She wasn't saying my father feared for me.

He feared losing property.

My mother admitted that she helped him.

She told herself she was protecting the family.

She told herself that a seventeen-year-old girl could not understand what she was risking.

She told herself Russell would eventually be forgotten.

Then she wrote about August 18.

She had intercepted Russell's message to me.

She had told him I no longer wanted to see him.

Then she had come to me.

She told me Russell had changed his mind.

She said he planned to leave without me.

She remembered me crying.

She remembered me asking whether he had said goodbye.

She wrote that she hated herself for lying.

But she did it anyway.

I put the letter down.

Outside, a lawn mower started somewhere down the street.

The ordinary sound made the confession feel even more unreal.

I continued.

My mother wrote that she had taken the locket because she believed it would make the lie easier to maintain.

She planned to return it after I accepted that Russell was gone.

Instead, I took it from her.

Then I ran toward the river.

That was the memory I had been missing.

I remembered now.

I had stood on the riverbank with the locket in my hand.

My mother had followed me.

She had begged me to come home.

I had refused.

Then Russell had appeared.

I closed my eyes.

The memory sharpened.

He had not been alone.

My father was behind him.

They were arguing.

My father shouted something.

Russell stepped toward me.

Then everything happened at once.

My father struck him.

Russell fell.

I screamed.

My mother grabbed me.

Someone pulled Russell away.

I had remembered the hospital.

I had remembered the blood.

But I had forgotten what came after.

My mother's letter explained it.

She wrote that my father had panicked when Russell stopped moving.

She said he believed he had killed him.

He ordered her to take me home.

She refused.

Instead, she stayed.

She watched Russell breathe.

Then she saw the locket beside him.

She picked it up.

She wrote that she intended to give it back to me.

But when she opened it, she saw the photograph.

And something changed.

The photograph showed Russell and me smiling.

On the back, he had written:

Chicago. Tomorrow.

My mother understood that we had planned to leave.

She also understood that if I stayed, my father could keep the house.

Her next words were almost impossible to read because the ink had smeared.

“I made the worst choice of my life.”

She took the locket.

She took the train tickets.

And she told my father she would make sure I believed Russell had abandoned me.

But there was something else.

A name.

Thomas Bell.

My mother wrote that Bell had been following Russell.

She knew because my father had told her.

But Bell had begun asking questions.

He had told my mother that Russell was not the problem.

She became afraid that the truth would come out.

So she went to the river.

She buried the locket in the old metal box.

I stopped.

The locket had not gone into the Mississippi that night.

I had thrown something else.

A piece of jewelry my mother had given me.

She had let me believe it was the locket.

I stared at the page.

My entire memory of that moment had been constructed around a false object.

I had watched something silver disappear into the river.

But it had not been our locket.

My mother had hidden the real one.

And years later, a flood had exposed it.

The story suddenly made sense.

Almost.

Then I reached the last page.

My mother's handwriting became uneven.

She wrote that she had returned to the river the next morning because she had forgotten something.

Not the locket.

Something else.

Something she had taken from Russell.

A photograph.

I knew that photograph.

It was the one she had kept in her jewelry box.

But beneath the confession was a name I had never seen.

“Thomas Bell saw me.”

I stared.

My mother continued.

“He knows what I did.”

The last paragraph contained only three sentences.

“I asked him to keep silent.”

“He agreed because he feared your father.”

“But he kept a copy.”

I looked at the papers from Susan Bell.

Thomas had kept a copy.

My mother had known.

That explained why she had been terrified.

But it still didn't explain one thing.

Why had she written this letter?

Why leave it hidden for decades?

At the bottom was a date.

1998.

My mother had written it twenty-three years before she died.

I counted backward.

She had kept the confession hidden for more than twenty years before her death.

Why?

I turned the page over.

There was writing on the back.

One final sentence.

“If you ever learn that Russell is alive, do not believe the first person who tells you why he stayed away.”

I stared at it.

Russell had told me he stayed away because he believed I hated him.

My mother had warned me not to believe the first explanation.

Suddenly, the room felt cold.

I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

“Did you read it?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“Most of it.”

“Mom?”

“She admitted everything.”

Rebecca was silent.

“She lied to both of us.”

“Yes.”

“She hid the locket.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Russell was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Then what's wrong?”

I looked at the last sentence.

“There was a warning.”

“What warning?”

“She said I shouldn't believe the first person who tells me why Russell stayed away.”

Rebecca didn't answer.

I understood why.

The question had been sitting between us since Russell died.

Why had he stayed away after finding me?

He had said fear.

But my mother had warned that fear was not the whole story.

I looked at the final page.

There was a telephone number written beneath the date.

I didn't recognize it.

But beside the number was a name.

“Evelyn Tate.”

Russell's sister.

I had never met her.

And if my mother had left her number, she had known exactly who I needed to contact.

I called.

A woman's voice answered on the third ring.

“Hello?”

“Is this Evelyn Tate?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Mary Louise Bennett.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn said, “I know.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

“Russell told me he had finally found you.”

“He talked about me?”

“Until the day he died.”

I closed my eyes.

“There is something I need to ask you.”

“I know.”

“You do?”

“Yes.”

Her voice became softer.

“You want to know why he really stayed away.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Yes.”

Evelyn exhaled.

“Then you need to hear what happened in 1987.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Evelyn Told Me Russell Had Found Me Years Earlier,
