to.

Susan looked at me.

“There is more.”

She placed another document on the table.

It was a letter from Thomas Bell to my father.

The letter was dated August 22.

It said:

I cannot continue this assignment.

I have witnessed enough to understand that the young man is not responsible for the situation.

If you want the girl to believe he abandoned her, you will have to do that without me.

My father had paid him.

But even he had eventually refused to continue.

I felt a strange sadness for a man I had never met.

Thomas Bell had seen what was happening.

He had known it was wrong.

And yet I wondered why he had waited so long to tell anyone.

Susan seemed to read my expression.

“He was ashamed.”

“He should have told me.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't folder.

“This is the part he never gave anyone.”

Inside was a map.

The same river location my mother's map had marked.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

Russell was left there for nearly an hour before being taken to the hospital.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Susan shook her head.

“My father didn't know why.”

I studied the map.

The same place.

The same date.

The same hidden box.

Then I remembered Russell's hospital note.

His belongings had been taken.

Someone had the locket.

The pieces finally fit.

My mother had taken the locket.

She had gone to the river.

She had likely thrown it away.

But why had the locket eventually resurfaced?

Susan had an answer.

“My father found a later report.”

She pulled another document from the cabinet.

The report described the flood years later.

A local man had found a small silver locket in the mud.

The man was a volunteer with a community river cleanup group.

He had turned it over to the police.

Eventually, it had ended up in an evidence archive.

Russell had found it decades later after asking about unidentified personal items from the old case.

I stared at the paper.

The locket had traveled through police storage, forgotten records, and eventually back into Russell's hands.

The river had not simply returned it.

It had preserved the one object that carried our names.

Susan looked at me.

“My father wrote one final sentence.”

“What?”

She turned the page.

I read it myself.

“If Mary Louise ever learns the truth, she should know that the boy waited.”

I couldn't stop crying.

Rebecca put her arm around me.

I thought about Russell sitting alone in that hospital.

Waiting.

Writing.

Believing I had rejected him.

I thought about myself at seventeen.

Waiting by the river.

Believing he had abandoned me.

Two frightened children separated by adults who thought they knew what was best.

When we left Susan's house, she gave me a copy of the records.

I held them against my chest.

Outside, the afternoon sun was fading.

Rebecca opened the car door.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Are you going to forgive Grandma?”

I looked toward the horizon.

“I don't know.”

“Do you forgive yourself?”

That question hurt more.

I thought about all the years I had spent believing I was unwanted.

All the years I had told myself that throwing away the locket had been a choice.

All the years I had blamed a seventeen-year-old boy for something neither of us had done.

“I think,” I said slowly, “I have to.”

Rebecca nodded.

Then she asked, “What will you do with all these records?”

I looked down at the folders.

“I'll keep them.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth should not disappear just because everyone who knew it is gone.”

We drove home in silence.

That evening, I placed the photograph, the hospital record, the train tickets, my mother's note, and Russell's final letter beside the locket.

For the first time, the pieces formed a complete picture.

Almost complete.

One question remained.

Why had my mother gone to the river after Russell was attacked?

And what exactly had she done there before telling me he had left?

I thought I knew.

But I had learned enough not to trust assumptions anymore.

The next morning, I opened my mother's old jewelry box.

At the very bottom was a small sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not in Russell's handwriting.

In my mother's.

I had never seen it before.

And suddenly I was afraid to open it.

<a
