7 – The Train Tickets Proved We Had Planned an Escape, but the Missing Hours Between the River and Station Held the Cruelest Part

I spent that night reconstructing August 19, 1981.

I wrote everything I remembered on scraps of paper.

The hospital.

My mother's voice.

The river.

Russell's truck.

The train.

The locket.

Nothing connected cleanly.

There were gaps.

Too many gaps.

Rebecca sat across from me with the old photograph between us.

“You were supposed to leave with him.”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember buying the tickets?”

“No.”

“Then who bought them?”

I looked at the names on the ticket.

Two seats.

No names.

Just destination and departure time.

“Russell.”

I called him out of habit.

The silence afterward was painful.

Rebecca looked away.

“I keep forgetting.”

“So do I.”

That was the strange cruelty of grief.

The mind knew something before the heart did.

I opened Russell's notebook again.

There was an entry dated August 18.

He wrote that he had arranged everything.

He had borrowed money.

He had packed one suitcase.

He had bought two train tickets.

He had planned to meet me at six the next morning.

The last sentence read:

Mary Lou says she will be there.

I cried when I read it.

I had kept my promise.

Or at least I had intended to.

Something had prevented me from reaching him.

The next entry was dated August 23.

There was nothing for August 19 through August 22.

Four days missing.

I searched the boxes again.

Then I found another notebook.

This one belonged to my father.

I had never seen it before.

The cover was stained.

Several pages had been torn out.

The first remaining entry was August 18.

“Walter came again.”

The next page.

“Can't pay.”

Then:

“She says the girl will run.”

I stopped.

Rebecca read it.

“Who's she?”

“My mother.”

The next line was worse.

“Need to stop them before morning.”

I felt sick.

The following pages were missing.

The next entry was August 22.

“Problem handled.”

Nothing else.

Rebecca stared at me.

“That sounds deliberate.”

“It is.”

We took photographs of every page.

Then I noticed something in the margin.

A small number.

417.

Our old house number.

I looked at Rebecca.

“He wrote this for himself.”

“What does 417 mean?”

“I don't know.”

We drove to Sycamore Street the next morning.

The house was gone.

A newer brick home stood where ours had been.

I sat in the car staring at the driveway.

I remembered my bedroom window.

The porch.

The basement.

The place where my father had kept his tools.

Then I remembered something else.

A cellar door behind the garage.

I had not thought about it in decades.

“There's something underneath the old garage.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“The house is different.”

“The garage isn't.”

We asked the current homeowner if we could look.

He was understandably suspicious.

But after I explained that my family had lived there decades earlier and showed him the photograph, he allowed us to walk around the property.

The garage was still standing.

The cellar door was hidden beneath weeds.

I opened it.

A cold smell rose from below.

Rebecca followed.

There was almost nothing inside.

An old workbench.

Rusty shelves.

A broken lantern.

Then I saw the wall.

Someone had scratched initials into the wood.

M.L.

R.T.

My eyes filled.

Russell had been here.

Or I had.

Perhaps both.

Rebecca ran her fingers over the letters.

“What is that?”

She pointed beneath them.

There was another mark.

A T.

Then another.

B.

T.B.

I didn't recognize it.

But the initials felt important.

We searched the shelves.

Behind a loose board, Rebecca found a small metal box.

Inside was a key and a folded note.

The note was from my mother.

It said:

If they come looking, tell them he left.

I sat down on the floor.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew we were going to leave.”

“Yes.”

“She planned to stop us.”

Rebecca looked at the key.

“What does this open?”

I knew immediately.

“Dad's old filing cabinet.”

We returned home.

My father had kept the cabinet in his office.

After his death, my mother had refused to let anyone open it.

I had forgotten that until that moment.

The key fit.

Inside were financial records.

Loan documents.

Property deeds.

And one folder marked T.B.

Rebecca opened it.

Inside was a photograph of a man I didn't recognize.

On the back:

Thomas Bell.

I read the name again.

“Who was he?”

Rebecca searched the papers.

“He was a private investigator.”

“For what?”

I found the answer.

My father had hired him in 1981.

The purpose was written in one sentence.

“Monitor Russell Tate.”

My hands went cold.

Why would my father need someone to monitor Russell?

Then we found the reports.

Thomas Bell had followed Russell.

He had documented his movements.

He had reported on our meetings.

He had photographed us.

He had even photographed Russell buying the train tickets.

My mother had known.

My father had known.

They had been watching us.

But the final report was missing.

There were reports dated August 16.

August 17.

August 18.

Nothing after.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Maybe Thomas Bell knows what happened.”

“He would be old.”

“If he's alive.”

We searched the phone directories.

Nothing.

Then Rebecca found a newspaper article from years earlier.

Thomas Bell had died in 2019.

My shoulders dropped.

“Then that's over.”

“No.”

She pointed at the article.

“He had a daughter.”

Her name was Susan Bell.

The article mentioned that she had inherited her father's business records.

We found her address.

She lived two towns away.

I hesitated before calling.

Then I dialed.

A woman answered.

“Hello?”

“Is this Susan Bell?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Mary Bennett.”

Silence.

Then Susan said, “Mary Louise Turner?”

I stopped breathing.

“Yes.”

“I wondered when you'd call.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“How do you know me?”

“My father kept your name.”

“Why?”

“Because he always said there was one case he regretted.”

My heart began pounding.

“What case?”

She was quiet.

“The Tate case.”

I closed my eyes.

“Do you have his records?”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what happened?”

Another pause.

“My father told me before he died.”

“What?”

“He said Russell Tate never abandoned you.”

I couldn't speak.

Susan continued.

“He said your father hired him to make sure Russell could not get to the train station.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

I asked the question that had haunted me for forty-three years.

“What happened?”

Susan's voice softened.

“My father wrote it all down.”

I gripped the phone.

“Can I see it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

I thanked her.

Before hanging up, she said one more thing.

“Mary?”

“Yes?”

“My father said you deserved to know who stopped Russell.”

I waited.

“He said it wasn't your father.”

The line went silent.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Thomas Bell’s Records
