6 – The Mark on My Mother’s Old River Map Led Us to a Place Russell Had Never Mentioned in Forty-Three Years

We went to the river just after sunrise.

Rebecca drove.

I carried the map inside a plastic folder because the paper was so brittle that one careless fold might destroy it.

The location marked by my mother was farther downstream than the place where I remembered throwing the locket.

There was almost nothing there now.

A narrow trail.

A broken wooden post.

Trees leaning toward the water.

And beyond them, the Mississippi moving with the same indifferent patience it had possessed when I was seventeen.

Rebecca looked at the map.

“This is it?”

“I think so.”

“How would Grandma have known about this place?”

“I don't know.”

We followed the trail.

The mud was soft from recent rain.

Birds moved through the branches overhead.

Every few yards, Rebecca checked the map.

Finally she stopped.

“This is where the circle is.”

I looked around.

There was an old concrete foundation half-hidden beneath weeds.

I remembered it.

Not clearly.

But enough.

“Mom?”

“I've been here before.”

“When?”

“1981.”

The memory came in pieces.

My mother had brought me here once.

She had told me we were taking a shortcut.

I had been angry with her because I wanted to meet Russell.

She had insisted he was not coming.

I remembered a shed.

A metal door.

A man standing beside a car.

Then nothing.

I pressed my fingers to my forehead.

Rebecca waited.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“No, you're remembering something.”

“I think I am.”

I walked toward the foundation.

There was a rusted metal box buried beneath a collapsed section of concrete.

Rebecca saw it at the same time.

“Mom.”

We dug with our hands.

The box was heavy.

The lid had nearly fused shut with rust.

When it finally opened, we found papers wrapped in oilcloth.

There were receipts.

A key.

And a photograph.

I lifted the photograph.

My mother stood beside my father.

Between them was Walter Tate.

Behind them was the same shed I had just remembered.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“What were they doing here?”

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

August 19.

After the boy is gone.

My stomach dropped.

Rebecca read it.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

We searched the papers.

One was a letter from Walter Tate.

He demanded repayment of the debt.

Another was from my father.

He wrote that he could not sell the house.

A third was handwritten by my mother.

It contained only one sentence.

“Mary Lou must never know what happened here.”

I sat on the ground.

The river moved behind us.

For forty-three years, I had believed the worst night of my life had happened at home.

Now I understood that my mother had brought me somewhere else.

She had planned something.

And I had forgotten.

Rebecca put the papers back into the box.

“Mom, we need to know what happened.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I looked at the old key.

“There might be another lock.”

We returned home and searched the boxes.

Nothing.

Then Rebecca noticed something about the key.

A small number had been scratched into the metal.

214.

Unit 214.

My hands went cold.

The key had been with the river documents all along.

Russell had given me the storage unit.

But he had not known this key existed.

We drove back.

The storage facility was nearly empty that afternoon.

Unit 214 stood open.

We searched every corner.

Finally, Rebecca found a small wooden cabinet beneath a stack of old boxes.

The key fit.

Inside was a notebook.

Russell's notebook.

I opened it.

The first pages were dated 1981.

He had written about the hospital.

About being unable to reach me.

About trying to contact my family.

Then, three pages in, the handwriting changed.

He wrote that he had overheard two nurses talking about a man who had visited him.

The man had asked whether Russell remembered a young woman.

Russell wrote that he thought the visitor was my father.

But he wasn't sure.

Then came another entry.

August 23.

I heard Mary Lou's mother telling someone that the locket is gone.

I stopped.

Rebecca read over my shoulder.

“The locket was gone before you threw it.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“But that's what it says.”

I kept reading.

Russell wrote that he had tried to leave the hospital.

He wanted to find me.

But his injuries made it impossible.

He had sent a message through a nurse.

It never reached me.

Then, months later, he received word that I had moved away.

He believed it.

The notebook contained years of scattered entries.

Not daily.

Not even monthly.

Just moments when the memory became too strong to ignore.

Then I reached 1987.

Russell had written about finding the locket.

He described the riverbank.

He described the mud.

He described the moment he opened it.

But one sentence stopped me.

“The photograph was missing.”

I read it twice.

“What photograph?” Rebecca asked.

“The one of us.”

“But the photograph was inside when he gave you the locket.”

“I know.”

“Then why was it missing?”

I turned the page.

Russell had written:

I think someone removed it before the river took the locket.

My heart began beating faster.

He had never seen the photograph again.

Until the storage unit.

But I remembered seeing it in the locket.

How?

I closed my eyes.

Then another memory came.

My mother standing beside my bed.

Holding the locket.

Opening it.

Taking something out.

I had been seventeen.

She had told me not to touch it.

I had forgotten.

Or perhaps I had forced myself to forget.

Rebecca was watching me.

“You remembered something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“My mother opened the locket before I threw it away.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she take the photograph?”

“I think so.”

The realization was devastating.

The photograph Russell thought had disappeared had not disappeared.

My mother had kept it.

And if she had kept the photograph, there was a chance she had kept other things.

We returned to my house.

My mother's old belongings were stored in the attic.

I had not opened those boxes in years.

Rebecca climbed the ladder first.

The attic smelled of dust and cedar.

We searched until the afternoon light disappeared.

Then Rebecca found a wooden jewelry box.

It was my mother's.

Inside were earrings.

A broken watch.

A wedding ring.

And beneath them, folded inside a handkerchief, was a photograph.

I knew it before I turned it over.

Russell and me.

Seventeen.

Beside the river.

On the back was something neither of us had ever seen.

A date.

August 18, 1981.

And beneath it, in my mother's handwriting:

They still believe they can leave together.

I stared at the words.

Rebecca whispered, “Mom.”

I could barely hear her.

There was one more thing beneath the photograph.

A small envelope.

Inside was a train ticket.

Two seats.

One destination.

Chicago.

August 19, 1981.

I looked at Rebecca.

“We were going to leave.”

She nodded.

“But we never did.”

“No.”

“Someone stopped us.”

Rebecca looked toward the attic door.

“Who?”

I held the photograph in my hand.

For the first time, I knew what question I had to answer.

Not why Russell disappeared.

Not why my mother lied.

But what happened between the river and the train station on August 19.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Train Tickets Proved We Had Planned an Escape, but the
