neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took it from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brought it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came to my house carrying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you&#39;d decided I wasn&#39;t good enough for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said I wanted the locket back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my fingertips against my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did I end up throwing it into the river?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother threw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me she would return it to you after I left town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must have known something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took the paper.<\/p>\n<p>A repayment agreement.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>My father&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>And below them, Walter Tate.<\/p>\n<p>I read the document twice.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a handwritten condition.<\/p>\n<p>If Mary Louise marries Russell Tate, the debt will be forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went numb.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was going to use your marriage to pay off the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t speak.<\/p>\n<p>Russell closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the part nobody told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had always said Russell was irresponsible.<\/p>\n<p>She had said he would ruin my future.<\/p>\n<p>She had told me boys like him disappeared when life became difficult.<\/p>\n<p>She had made me believe she was protecting eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat scar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell down the basement stairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father thought he&#39;d killed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen St. Anne&#39;s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe drove me there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell explained that my father had told the hospital he was a drifter. He didn&#39;t want Russell&#39;s family to know where he was. He didn&#39;t want police involved. He wanted the entire incident hidden.<\/p>\n<p>I listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my mother knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew you were in the hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brought the locket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you I didn&#39;t want you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you I hated you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice became small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied to both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood the cruelty of it.<\/p>\n<p>She had not simply lied to me.<\/p>\n<p>She had built two separate versions of the truth and locked each of us inside one.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed Russell rejected me.<\/p>\n<p>Russell had believed I rejected him.<\/p>\n<p>And forty-three years had passed between those two lies.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca reached into another box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She held a document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed it in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The date was 1981.<\/p>\n<p>The signatures were unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>Walter Tate.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath the formal language was the sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>If Mary Louise marries Russell Tate, the debt will be forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>He was crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew that part until years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the debt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew your father owed money.
