investigators stood beside a folding table covered with evidence bags.<\/p>\n<p>Carol was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Neither was Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left before we arrived,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you still here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found enough evidence to stop the search temporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the table.<\/p>\n<p>Folders.<\/p>\n<p>Bank records.<\/p>\n<p>Property documents.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Three phones.<\/p>\n<p>And the replica walnut box.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was in our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator opened a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first pages contained ordinary property transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the trust.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s initials.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm&#39;s initials.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator pointed to a series of transfers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney moved from the trust account to Cedar and Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it went into property purchases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonal accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol&#39;s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral transfers eventually reached an account in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never opened one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently someone did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale leaned over the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read the account number.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know this account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>It was an old account I had closed years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Or thought I had.<\/p>\n<p>Carol had handled the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me the bank closed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was reopened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree months after your wife&#39;s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt as though the ground had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cCarol reopened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour name is here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>It was my signature.<\/p>\n<p>But not my handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had practiced it.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Daniel had practiced Margaret&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>The realization made me sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe forged my signature too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a handwriting expert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paced toward the unit door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t make me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Mom was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily approached him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were manipulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a child trying to protect your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have made it safe for you to tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then the investigator opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may explain why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter.<\/p>\n<p>Not Margaret&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>Or a perfect imitation of it.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was addressed to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>It said that I wanted him to sign over his interest in the trust because I was struggling financially.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was probably the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter had been dated two weeks before the bank visit.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had created a paper trail suggesting Daniel had willingly surrendered his inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>The signature was mine.<\/p>\n<p>The language sounded like me.<\/p>\n<p>But there was one mistake.<\/p>\n<p>A phrase I would never use.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret would have noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So would Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote this?\u201d Emily asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale picked up another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t from Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a note from Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>It was addressed to Carol.<\/p>\n<p>The first sentence was enough.<\/p>\n<p>YOU PROMISED THE BOY WOULD NEVER KNOW.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale did.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm accused Carol of changing the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that the house had been intended to remain under their control until the property market improved.<\/p>\n<p>He said Daniel was supposed to receive a smaller amount later.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a sentence that made me look at Mr. Hale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mistake was believing the father would never ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had spent eleven years not asking questions.<\/p>\n<p>The letter ended with a warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the boy marries, the trust changes. You will lose access. Make sure he signs before then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were trying to get me to sign something before the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator pulled another document from the file.<\/p>\n<p>A marital property agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Emily&#39;s name was on it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s name was on it.<\/p>\n<p>But the document gave Carol control over any inherited property Daniel received.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted us to sign this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither did I,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Carol ever mention a prenup?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it was routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me it was just paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted my own attorney to review it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol had become angry.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>Emily had delayed.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding had happened before Carol could obtain the signatures.<\/p>\n<p>And once Daniel married, the trust shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Control moved away from Carol.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed us a bank transfer dated two days before the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-two thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>From the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Into an account controlled by Cedar and Rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol knew the deadline was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was trying to remove as much as possible before control changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator produced the deed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original sale was legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house was sold legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did my wife say I was stealing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the proceeds were supposed to remain in the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the next document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did they go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my chest tighten.<\/p>\n<p>So she had not merely hidden money.<\/p>\n<p>She had redirected it.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>Then why had Margaret believed she could trust her?<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale seemed to read the question on my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife gave her a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe she was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lifted a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was Margaret&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside the replica box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>A single sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had written only one paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Carol has failed, do not ask why she became cruel. Ask when she first became afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale looked toward the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it means we are looking at the wrong person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol stole the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe forged documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe manipulated Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are we missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone Margaret mentioned in the first recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator looked at the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven&#39;t opened this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt requires a password.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator tried her birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The date of the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding date.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily said quietly, \u201cTry the day she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The password worked.<\/p>\n<p>The screen opened.<\/p>\n<p>There were hundreds of files.<\/p>\n<p>Most were financial.<\/p>\n<p>One folder was named simply M.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Five of them.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator opened the first.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s voice filled the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>But this recording was different.<\/p>\n<p>She was crying.<\/p>\n<p>And she was speaking to someone.<\/p>\n<p>Not Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not me.<\/p>\n<p>Carol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Malcolm has asked you to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s voice answered faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t done it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said, \u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cThere are four more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator clicked the second.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are listening to these recordings, then Carol has probably told you I never trusted her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that is not the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trusted her enough to give her a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret said a sentence that made Mr. Hale close his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm is the reason I am afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=7935\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Margaret\u2019s Final Recordings Separated Carol\u2019s Betrayal From Malcolm\u2019s Scheme, and the Missing Money Suddenly Had a Far More Dangerous Purpose<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We reached the storage facility just after sunrise.
