Margaret&#39;s pearls rested beside the forged trust document. The letter she had written for her son remained unopened.<\/p>\n<p>I held up the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you have anything to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were wet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t take Mom&#39;s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one asked whether you took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>The DJ quietly carried the cassette deck into the suite and locked the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called hotel security,\u201d he said. \u201cThey&#39;re checking the exits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Below us, the hotel parking lot glowed beneath yellow lamps.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s car was still near the ballroom entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t drive away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have taken a taxi,\u201d Emily replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could still be in the hotel,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Emily called the front desk and gave them Carol&#39;s description.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned toward her new husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow tell us why you look terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just watched the woman who helped raise me accuse me of stealing four hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t raise you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The words came out harder than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worked twelve-hour shifts after Mom died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol made dinner. She went to school meetings. She sat beside me when I learned to drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pain crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd every time I asked why Mom&#39;s photographs were disappearing, you told me to stop upsetting Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t defend myself.<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>I had been grateful to Carol for filling the empty spaces.<\/p>\n<p>I had never asked what she removed to make those spaces available.<\/p>\n<p>Emily sat beside the walnut box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should read your mother&#39;s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>His name was written across the front in handwriting he had not seen since he was sixteen.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were shaking.<\/p>\n<p>The first line made him cover his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He handed the letter to Emily.<\/p>\n<p>She read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sweet boy, if this letter has reached you on your wedding day, then you are older now than I was when I first held you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>Emily continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I could tell you that being your mother made me wise. Mostly, it made me afraid. I was afraid I would fail you. Afraid I would embarrass you. And now I&#39;m afraid you will remember only the days when I was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease remember the good days too,\u201d Emily read. \u201cRemember the pancakes shaped like animals. Remember the summer you tried to build a swimming pool with a garden hose and a tarp. Remember that I laughed more than I cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily had to stop.<\/p>\n<p>She breathed in slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house is not meant to make you rich. It is meant to make sure no one can ever tell you that you do not belong somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSell it if you want. Keep it if you want. But whatever comes from it belongs to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>I had never known.<\/p>\n<p>Emily kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol understands the trust. I have asked her to protect it until you are old enough to protect yourself. I believe she will keep her word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily reached the final paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything is unclear, contact Mr. Edward Hale. His card is beneath this letter. He prepared every document and has certified copies of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lifted the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>A faded business card slid out.<\/p>\n<p>EDWARD HALE, ATTORNEY AT LAW.<\/p>\n<p>A telephone number was written on the back in Margaret&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>It was nearly midnight.<\/p>\n<p>I called anyway.<\/p>\n<p>An elderly man answered on the fifth ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward Hale speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave him my name.<\/p>\n<p>He was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked a question that made my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs your son married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd did he receive the walnut box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Carol&#39;s suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from the person who was supposed to give it to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put the trust papers inside it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him about the house.<\/p>\n<p>I told him about the sale.<\/p>\n<p>Then I told him about the termination document and the date beside Margaret&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat document is fraudulent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son gripped the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife&#39;s trust became permanent when she died. She could not terminate it three years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone used false identification or persuaded a bank employee to accept an impossible document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat signatures were required to release the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol&#39;s as trustee,\u201d Mr. Hale said. \u201cThe father&#39;s signature surrendering his right to remain in the property, and the son&#39;s signature consenting to an early distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed papers when the house was sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol had placed yellow tabs beside every signature line.<\/p>\n<p>She had told me exactly where to sign.<\/p>\n<p>I had trusted her.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale asked how old Daniel had been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the bank would have required him to appear in person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily turned toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you go to a bank with Carol when you were nineteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSon, this is not the time to protect anyone. If the funds were released, the bank would have copied your identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t remember going to a bank where someone gave away your mother&#39;s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed a lot of college papers that year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Carol help you with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale told us he still had the original trust file.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted us at his office at eight the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring the box,\u201d he said. \u201cBring every document inside it. Bring the cassette. Do not let Carol touch any of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>A knock came at the door.<\/p>\n<p>Two hotel security officers stood outside with the wedding planner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the woman you described on a hallway camera,\u201d one officer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left through the kitchen exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dark vehicle picked her up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the driver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plate was covered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed Emily a printed photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Carol was climbing into the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was visible.<\/p>\n<p>The driver&#39;s face was not.<\/p>\n<p>But someone was sitting in the back.<\/p>\n<p>A man.<\/p>\n<p>He was holding another walnut box.<\/p>\n<p>It looked exactly like the one on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two boxes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, his phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Carol appeared.<\/p>\n<p>DO NOT GO TO EDWARD HALE.<\/p>\n<p>A second message followed.<\/p>\n<p>IF YOU TELL YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED AT THE BANK, I WILL TELL YOUR WIFE EVERYTHING.<\/p>\n<p>Emily read it over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened at the bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol thinks it was something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is trying to frighten us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This time it was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood behind a bank counter.<\/p>\n<p>He looked nineteen.<\/p>\n<p>Carol stood beside him.<\/p>\n<p>A document lay beneath his hand.<\/p>\n<p>The date in the corner matched the date on the forged trust release.<\/p>\n<p>Emily lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you didn&#39;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were standing beside Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped with my college paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>The DJ moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I should go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cPlease stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re the only person here who isn&#39;t part of this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DJ stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>An audio file.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel tried to delete it.<\/p>\n<p>Emily took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>She pressed PLAY.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can keep pretending you don&#39;t remember. But the bank had cameras. I kept a copy before the footage disappeared. Tell your father the truth, or I will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sank onto the edge of the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stood in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been married for five hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t make our first night the first time you lie to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at his mother&#39;s pearls.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at the cassette deck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the bank with Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said there was a problem with the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Mom had made a mistake in the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the forged document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Carol ask you to sign it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me it was only a correction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily&#39;s voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed your mother&#39;s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe put Mom&#39;s old trust papers in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me to copy the signature exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily twisted her wedding ring around her finger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged your dead mother&#39;s signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely hear my own voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>He had the same frightened eyes he had worn the night Margaret died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Carol told me the house had already been sold illegally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t explain why you helped her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said the police were coming for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol showed me documents with your name on them.
