A walnut box. A rose carved into the lid. Pearls. A letter. House documents.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s father had made that box for her when she was twelve.<\/p>\n<p>It had always sat on the top shelf of her bedroom closet.<\/p>\n<p>She kept photographs in it. Birth certificates. Old letters. Small things she considered too meaningful to leave in a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>After Margaret died, I searched for it.<\/p>\n<p>I could not find it.<\/p>\n<p>I had asked Carol whether she knew where it had gone.<\/p>\n<p>She told me Margaret must have given it away.<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>Now I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol wiped her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took a step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means your mother made plans I didn&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were her friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were her friend for fourteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she trusted you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily asked quietly, \u201cThen why are you afraid of the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>The DJ shifted uneasily near the equipment.<\/p>\n<p>He looked as though he wanted to leave but knew that walking away from a room containing this much tension might be the worst decision of his life.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it back on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol moved.<\/p>\n<p>The DJ blocked her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don&#39;t touch my equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The bride looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you play the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a little more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen play it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He repaired the cassette and started it again.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s voice returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Carol because she understands money, and because I believed she would protect my son even after I was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Carol closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut a promise is not permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe walnut box with the rose carved into the lid belongs to my son and his wife. You promised me you would give it to them before their wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cWhat box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s voice continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside are my wedding pearls. They are not valuable because of their price. They belonged to my mother, and I want my son&#39;s wife to have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily touched her bare neck.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret mentioned the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Then the documents concerning the house.<\/p>\n<p>The recording stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Carol suddenly reached for the machine.<\/p>\n<p>The DJ caught her wrist before she could touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cassette had stretched slightly.<\/p>\n<p>He carefully stopped the deck.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s voice was low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one Mom and I lived in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you sold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sold Mom&#39;s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol gave a sharp, nervous laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lived there for twenty-three years. Of course you thought it was yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked at the damaged tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means your mother trusted people more than she should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t talk about her like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s restraint finally broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took care of her when your father couldn&#39;t even look at her without falling apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cleaned her room. I fed her when she couldn&#39;t hold a spoon. I drove you to practice. I sat beside her through appointments. I listened to her talk about everyone&#39;s future as if she could arrange the whole world before she left it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then you married her husband,\u201d Emily said.<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily did not blink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted you to give us the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>That silence answered more than words could have.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her where it was.<\/p>\n<p>She refused.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily noticed the purse beneath Carol&#39;s chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol moved quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened the purse.<\/p>\n<p>There was no walnut box.<\/p>\n<p>There was a small brass key attached to a paper tag.<\/p>\n<p>Two words had been written on it.<\/p>\n<p>BRIDAL SUITE.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at Carol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went into our room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was leaving you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol followed us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel corridor was almost empty. Wedding flowers stood in tall glass vases outside several rooms. The music from another reception drifted faintly through a closed door.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the hallway, Emily unlocked their suite.<\/p>\n<p>Everything appeared untouched.<\/p>\n<p>Her dress hung beside the window.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoes were beside the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Cards from relatives covered the dresser.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel pointed underneath the bed.<\/p>\n<p>A black suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Carol stopped behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pulled it out.<\/p>\n<p>The suitcase belonged to her.<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The walnut box was inside.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knelt.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers traced the carved rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom kept my first lost tooth in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol stood in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to give it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She couldn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter you removed everything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I had defended her for years.<\/p>\n<p>Now I could not meet her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened the box.<\/p>\n<p>The pearls rested on top.<\/p>\n<p>They were yellowed with age but still beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath them lay an envelope with Daniel&#39;s name written in Margaret&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Emily lifted out a stack of legal documents.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a bank statement.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read the number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree hundred eighteen thousand, four hundred forty dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol spoke quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the original deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat deposit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did the house sell for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree hundred eighteen thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>Carol shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money was invested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have access here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow us your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I don&#39;t have access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you have something to hide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand what your mother wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She couldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Emily searched the box again.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers found a folded document beneath the lining.<\/p>\n<p>She unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>The title was printed in black.<\/p>\n<p>TERMINATION OF TRUST AND RELEASE OF FUNDS.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Then the second.<\/p>\n<p>My hands became cold.<\/p>\n<p>The trust had supposedly been terminated eight years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Every dollar had been withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>The document stated that the funds had been transferred to an account in my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol pointed toward the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour signature is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared beneath the release.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn&#39;t my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily whispered something that made the room feel smaller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the name beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>My dead wife&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>The date beside it was three years after her funeral.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, my mind refused to make the connection.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel said, \u201cSomeone forged Mom&#39;s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held up the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you forge it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me who did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol turned.<\/p>\n<p>She ran.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shouted after her.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway swallowed the sound of her footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>The elevator doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Carol rushed inside.<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me as the doors began to close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t forge it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour son did!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doors shut.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me she was lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Emily heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I held up the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you have anything to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were wet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t take Mom&#39;s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one asked whether you took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>That was when I realized we had reached the part of the truth that Margaret had known would hurt.<\/p>\n<p>And Daniel was terrified of telling us.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
